As you can probably tell, I don’t put much effort into naming my stories. AngelTown is a silly reference to Devil Town by Cavetown, which I think is the song for depressed middle school kids. I was lightly inspired by Young Royals on Netflix.
Luka is the first mute character I wrote, and I think he’s one of my favorite characters that I’ve ever written.
The prologue was added when I edited the story. I was thinking about ways I could improve the story, and one of the ways I thought about was to add an entire section that explains how Maeve was separated. Originally, Maeve wasn’t supposed to know about Felix at all, which made her eventual apology at the end feel extremely sudden and very stupid.
At the beginning, I added more of Maeve’s mother just absolutely bullying her. Elle is also a big bully and quickly takes over Maeve’s life. Again, there’s this theme of nobody truly understanding her, similar to how in Ghost Story, the narrator was literally invisible and in Neon Lights, Cherri was also misunderstood.
At the end of Beginning, something happens to Luka. I imagined that he went through events that mirror parts of my own life, but my intention in not explicitly writing what happened was so that the reader could fill in the massive blank.
I definitely fleshed out Middle after the rewrite. The whole party scene wasn’t there, and Maeve was kidnapped after her movie night with Prince. Her being kidnapped during the party adds a lot more suspense building up to it. Maeve also completely forgets about Luka and he isn’t that present in Middle.
When I got to writing End, I wasn’t sure what to do. I wanted to reveal Elle’s backstory and resolve her out of the story, but I just wasn’t sure how. But hey, we get to see the violent, protective side of Luka, which makes you really wonder what Elle did to him.
