"The word yayo and its feminine yaya are familiar, colloquial and childish ways of referring to grandparents. Although these forms have become quite widespread in Spain, they were originally common in Aragon and in territories in contact with Catalan-speaking areas. They come from the Catalan "iaio" and "iaia", and similar forms also exist in French Occitan areas."
