“First off.” Mrs. Atei looked around the class. “Can anyone tell me who founded the Adventurer’s Guild?”
Unlike the previous topic, there was only a third of the class with their hands raised. All of which were those with family members who are adventurer’s or guild staff.
“Suvic.” Mrs. Atei gestured for Suvic to answer.
“Ada and Rubim's Dad!” Suvic shot to his feet and answered with full confidence.
If it weren’t for the fact they were already seated, the three pairs of Twins would’ve staggered. Erama brought both hands in front of her face, not wanting to be seen as related to Suvic. Ada and Rubim both facepalmed. Mrs. Atei had also momentarily slumped at the podium.
“A bit more specific, Suvic?” Mrs. Atei smiled as gently as she could.
Suvic tilted his head, Haven't I already been specific?
Secilas kicked Suvic's butt from behind, leaned forward and whispered.
“You need to specify his name dummy!” Secilas sighed.
Suvic, who was rubbing his kicked butt with a pout, straightened with his eyes lit up.
“Right, yes uh, Phim Suse!” Suvic answered loudly.
“Yes correct.” Mrs. Atei just kept smiling. “Please sit.”
“Now then.” Mrs. Atei brought her hands together. “Take notes from here on, as this information will be useful to you, whether it’s needed in a test or not. I shall write on the mana board as I go.”
All the students got out their notebooks and spread them out on their desks, pens at the ready.
“Mr. Suse founded the Adventurer’s Guild after the old war ended. Initially, it was in order for those who only knew how to fight and couldn’t return to ‘normality’ after leaving the battlefield. At that point in time there were many of those who were like that, there still are even now.” Mrs. Atei paused with some sadness in her eyes. “Over the years since the founding, the Guild’s system and infrastructure has stabilized into what it is today.
She paused and gave them time to finish taking their notes before swiping the mana board to a fresh screen. After which she started writing some large letters in the format of a column. She wrote the following letters in ascending order; SS, S, A, B, C, D, E.
“These are the different ranks granted to adventurer’s according to their overall abilities, and it determines the level of authority they hold or the jobs they can take. However, regardless of your strength, when first entering the Guild, you’ll start at the rank of E for an extended period. A probation period if you would. And would be expected to do the most menial jobs during that period.” She paused and looked at her students, then asked. “Can any of you, who don’t have any family working with Guild, guess as to why that is?”
Most of the students tried to think of why but couldn’t come up with an answer. One boy, after hesitating a bit, raised his hand. It was the boy who had answered during the previous topic.
“Yail, what do you think is the reason?” Mrs. Atei asked, gently encouraging him.
“Um, would it be so that everyone starts at an equal position?” Yail stood as he twiddled the hem of his shirt with his fingers. “Regardless of their previous status?”
“A good guess, please sit.” Mrs. Atei smiled. “What Yail said is indeed part of the reason. The main reason, however, is to test the individual’s character and to see whether they’re suitable to be an adventurer in the first place. It is also what determines that person’s rank once the probation period is over.”
The three sets of Twins were all nodding their heads, they had heard these before from Ada and Rubim’s Dad before.
“This is also why amongst the low ranks, you might come across those with tremendous power except that their character caused them to not be qualified for a rank that’s equivalent to their power.” Mrs. Atei’s face stopped smiling as she explained seriously. “Likewise, in the higher ranks, you’ll find those who don’t have tremendous power, some even have less power than average. However, they have other abilities to make up for that and tend to be very adaptable to nearly any situation that might occur. Combined with their appropriate character, they are qualified for the higher ranks. Of course, these are the more extreme examples and not common place.”
One of the students raised their hand. Mrs. Atei gestured for them to speak.
“Do they only test the adventurers at the beginning? What if the adventurer changes over time?” The student asked.
“Good question. I'll tell you.” Mrs. Atei’s lips curved upwards. “They have an annual reassessment to make sure that the adventurers haven't allowed the authority provided with their rank to go to their heads. That they aren't abusing that authority. The same is done for the entirety of the Guild staff as well, Mr. Suse doesn't allow himself to be exempt from that either. Each Guild branch will have a certain type of mana crystal that's been developed by alchemists. The artifact will analyse your memories of the past year and make a decision based on the result of the analysis. It has been proven that it is 99% accurate.”
The students’ eyes appeared curious, fascinated, and some were even scared by the existence of such an artifact.
“Depending on the result the outcome might be to continue with your current position, be promoted, be demoted or in severe cases banned from all Guild facilities.”
Mrs. Atei stopped once more to give the students a chance to finish writing down their notes.
As the students finished writing their notes down, one raised their hand. Mrs. Atei gestured the student to speak.
“So, when exactly can you join the Guild?” The student asked eagerly.
“I was about to get to that point.” Mrs. Atei raised her brow. “You can join the Guild once you reach the appropriate age agreed between your races and the Guild. For humans and races with similar life expectancies, that’ll be around 50 years old, for the elves it’ll be 70 years old. The Dragon Clans need to be at least 150 years old; for mixed races, it’s been agreed that the race of the longest life expectancy in their bloodline will be used as the age limit.” She pointed to the Twins. “ For example, Ada and Rubim’s age limit will be based on their Mother’s Demon race. So, it’ll be a long way off before anyone in this class can join. For the next 25 years at least.”
A collective grunt of disappointment sounded from the entire class. Mrs. Atei shook her head and chuckled.
