Scarlett spent the next few days poring over the details of REX’s case in a secret makeshift office at her expensive pad. Papers and holographic files were scattered across the desk as she tried to piece together a pattern in the chaos REX had left behind. Every crime scene, every witness account painted a picture of someone who wasn’t just dangerous—but someone with a plan.
The mutant attacks weren’t random acts of violence. They were deliberate, calculated. And yet, no one could seem to find the connection between them.
Scarlett stared at the map she had laid out before her, her fingers tracing the lines of the city’s sectors. Each red dot marked an incident connected to REX, spreading out in a spiderweb of destruction across EDVAC. But there was something about the pattern that felt off, something she couldn’t quite see.
Her comm-link buzzed, breaking her concentration.
“Adair,” she answered, her tone clipped.
“It’s Lin,” a familiar voice crackled through the line. Lin was one of Scarlett’s few trusted informants in the city, someone who had contacts in places even the government couldn’t reach.
“I’ve got a lead for you,” Lin continued. “But it’s dangerous. Word is, REX’s been hiding out in the Lower District—near the old tech factories. But you didn’t hear it from me.”
Scarlett’s eyes narrowed as she listened, her mind already calculating her next move.
“I’ll handle it,” she replied, cutting the connection.
The Lower District was notorious for being a haven for mutants and criminals alike. It was the kind of place where the government had little to no control, and people like Scarlett—people without abilities—were at a distinct disadvantage. But she didn’t care. She had faced worse.
Grabbing her coat, Scarlett headed for the door, her mind focused on one thing: finding REX.
Scarlett hastily leaves her home on a bike coursing through the streets unto the highway that leads only one way-to the lower district.
