The class looked at William confused.
"Field trip?" Hector repeated.
"Yes, you see, we as class 45 have gotten special permission to help with the investigation of our new-found drug problem." William explained.
"So that is our field trip? You want us to become detectives?" Ophelia asked.
"Indeed, and whilst the school's guard force is investigating the local pubs, gambling rings, or sketchy underground hangouts, I have another place in mind." William explained
"A place that the ordinary bum from the island of Nostradamus couldn't enter." William said.
"Oh? And what could that place be?" Amelia asked.
"We are heading to the Leviathan's den." William exclaimed.
The group turned to each other, confused about what exactly this place was. All except Ophelia, who seemed awfully happy to hear the name, the leviathans' den.
"Really? Are we really going there?" Ophelia geeked out.
William gave her a knowing smile.
"The leviathan’s den is the greatest and most elaborate casino the world has ever seen." William explained.
"People could start wars over invites to this place. It's simply for the lucky, the elite, and the rich." William told them.
"Casino?" Jimmy's voice erupted from the group, unable to hide the excitement in his voice.
William simply grinned at his enthusiasm.
"Yes, and it's with your help that we are getting in Miss Cosmatos." William told her.
Ophelia's gleeful expression quickly turned to shock as she heard his statement, and yet again, William gave her a knowing nod.
"I guess this school really does know everything about us." Ophelia said.
Yet again, the rest of the class looked at her confused.
"I'm not following. He simply stated your family name. Is it something I'm missing?" Nadia asked.
"Well, you see, our friend Ophelia here is a part of a famous crime family. The Cosmatos have ruled the underworld in Greece and slowly spread their influence out to the rest of Europe. They were once even said to be able to rival the five crowns." William grinned.
"And it's with her name that we are gaining access to the greatest casino the earth has ever seen. If we are hoping to hear anything about Angel eyes, it will most likely be from the den." William explained.
"Wait! Ophelia is a part of a crime family?" Nadia erupted.
"And you didn't tell us!" Amelia jumped in.
"We could have had so much more to talk about! Come on girl!" Amelia continued.
Nadia simply stood gob smacked, as her confused worry got ignored by the group's now fascination with Ophelia's family fame, she muttered.
"I'm in a class full of lunatics... I guess this is how you feel, Hector."
Hector just gave her a pat on the back and spoke.
"You get used to it."
After soaking in her newfound status within the class of being "the girl with rich history" Ophelia spoke.
"So how exactly do you need my help? You want me to pull some contacts or maybe call my father?" she asked, a hint of pride in her voice.
William, however, shook his head, which came as a bit of a shock for Ophelia.
"Simply your presence will be enough. The plan is that the eight of us will gather at the entrance in our finest of clothes, and then, you, Ophelia, will state who you are and demand that the rest of us shall follow with you down." William explained.
"T-that's it?" Amelia asked.
"You made it sound like we were going to infiltrate this big casino like spies or something, but you just want us to enter through the VIP line?" she asked, a bit disappointed.
"Well yeah. Why shouldn't we take the easy road if it's standing right in front of us?" William asked.
Amelia simply sighed a huff of disappointment and agreed.
"Well, how do we find this casino?" Nicholas asked.
"I have run through almost every corner of this Island soon, but I've never seen such a lavish or popular establishment." Nicholas explained.
"Well, we find it around 1500 meters below sea level." Williams stated nonchalantly.
"I-It's under the sea?" Hector exclaimed.
"Yep. One of the earth's marvels of architecture. Being held up by a combination of magic and pure steel and concrete." Ophelia explained.
"And the only entrance is right here on the island. Usually, you need a ticket to find the entrance since it's hidden by magic. However, I have done some research and asked some old friends for assistance." William said as he then pulled up eight shining silver tickets.
"Now these won’t help us get in, but they will lead us to the entrance."
"So, we will start this field trip of ours in two days. So, get your finest clothes ready and be prepared to bluff. We will meet, like with the test, outside the main entrance of the school on Friday morning. Then, when we get to the entrance to the casino, Ophelia will have to use your name and every trick you have to get us in." William explained.
Ophelia nodded and the group got hyped up. William could see the excitement in their eyes to go undercover to help the school. Making them feel like the stars of an action movie.
William couldn’t help but to let out a small laugh as he saw their enthusiasm.
"Just like the good old days..." he thought.
"Now, not to spoil your mood, but since I'm still your teacher, and we still have 40 minutes left of this lecture, we will have to move on. Now everyone gets a piece of paper, and we will continue on from Monday's lesson on Origami 101." William told them.
The class responded with a groan but reluctantly walked down to each grab a set of papers before opening up their notes from previous classes. They each began to write down words on pieces of paper whilst trying to infuse yade into it.
Just like previous classes, none seemed to get anywhere further than creating small objects like daggers or knives.
Jimmy, who had been caught last lesson trying to write with his ink art to try and cheat into making better weapons, was being observed heavily by William.
Class continued on, and none had made much progress until suddenly, Abigail shouted out in surprise as her paper had formed a great sword.
Leaving her newfound classmates impressed over how far she got after just one lesson.
As they where dismised the seven students of class 45 left together as their final lecture of the day was done. The sun was still up and it wasn’t that late in the day.
"I wanna make some cool artifacts from origami. That bastard thinks he is so much better..." Jimmy groaned.
"I mean he is." Hector pointed out.
"Yeah, he can do that and you can’t." Ophelia jumped in to tease Jimmy.
"Watch it!" Jimmy said jerking his fist in the air.
"Oh, the street rat is picking a fight with the mafia now, huh?" Nicholas jumped in, causing some laughs to echo around.
"Oh, don’t forget, he has the dark empress on his side." Hector jumped in, causing some more laughs and a loud groan from Amelia.
As they laughed, Nadia noticed that Abigail just walked quietly a bit away from them.
"Hey, why don’t we all do something together. Help the newbie get to know us better?" she proposed.
"Yeah, like we know each other much." Jimmy said, his response gaining him a jab in the gut by Amelia.
"I mean, he is kind of right. We haven’t really got to know each other that well. I mean we just learned about Ophelia's family." Hector said.
"Then we can see it as a bonding moment between everyone." Nadia said.
With a collective nod, the group decided to head out of the school and look around.
Abigail, however, was still a bit hesitant.
"T-that sounds lovely but..." she said, grabbing her arm as her aura fluttered.
"No, You and Daniel have been practicing for this. I can contain it." Abigail thought.
"Sure. I haven’t really been outside the school, so I don’t really know of any good places." she said.
"There is a pretty good bar just about 20 minutes from here." Jimmy suggested.
"You wanna go drinking? It’s like 3 pm." Nicholas stated.
"And we are all over 18, and the island’s drinking age is the same as in France. So, we will be fine." Jimmy said.
"Did you even listen to why I went against your argument?" Nicholas asked.
"Nope."
"Anyway, anyone else got a better idea?" Jimmy asked.
The group looked to each other, but no one found anything else to do so they went with Jimmy's bar idea.
The seven headed out of the school and followed Jimmy down the more "cleaner" streets, past the alleys covered with depressed gamblers and finally to a little hole in the wall simply named "Le prophète".
It was a small bar adorned with old paintings of prophets, star signs, and other astrological symbols. On the wall right next to the bar counter was a large portrait of a man with a long grayish beard. It was a portrait of Michel de Nostredame.
Inside was just the barmaid and one other patron who sat with a glass of beer reading a book.
As soon as the seven entered, the barmaid looked up and immediately yelled.
"Englishman!" the barmaid's arms flew up as she recognized Jimmy's face.
"Claire!" Jimmy exclaimed equally as happy as the bar maid.
"She knows you?" Amelia asked.
"I been here about two times before, we ended up talking a lot since I was usually the only one here." Jimmy explained.
"You brought company!" Claire said, her French accent laying heavy over her words.
"Yes. Friends of mine who I thought could experience the wonders you make here." Jimmy said.
Claire laughed at his comment.
"Very well, I will have your orders out in five." Claire said as she turned back to start making drinks.
"But we didn’t even order yet." Abigail said.
"That's the best part. This place is run by magic. This whole place is an artifact created by Claire's grandfather. As soon as one steps in, the bar reads your soul to know exactly what you crave." Jimmy explained.
"That's what Claire told me at least."
The group gasped at this revelation and sat down at a table next to the reading man. As they sat down, Abigail noticed how Amelia had kept rubbing her head since they left class.
"A-are you okay?" she asked her.
"Yeah, I think my head is just a bit jumbled from the whole thing with William from earlier." Amelia responded.
"Oh yeah, what even happened?" Nicholas asked.
"Well, everything kind of just became a blur. His face vanished, and then there was this eye that stared into me, and it just felt like my head was turning to soup. Soup that was slowly being sucked out of me." Amelia told them.
"Holy hell... are you sure you're fine?" Jimmy asked.
"I'm sure Jim." Amelia said.
Not much later Claire arrived with their drinks.
A John Collins for Amelia.
A glass of Lauders for Jimmy.
An 8-up soft drink for Nadia.
A glass of red wine for Hector.
An Ouzo Lemonade for Ophelia.
A Dragon fruit Sangria for Nicholas.
A cup of coffee for Abigail.
As their drinks arrived, Hector took a moment to ask.
"You have quite the theme here. I assume you are quite a fan of Nostradamus."
Claire smiled and said.
"You could say that."
"Oh, don’t be like that. Come on, spill it." Jimmy blurted out as he took a sip of his drink.
Clair let out a short laugh before she began.
"Well. I am actually a descendant of Michel de Nostredame." Claire said.
"What!" Nadia exclaimed.
"I thought There were no living relatives of the man?" she asked.
"Well, it's just me and my father who remain, so it's nothing grand. But I thought I could use this bar as a bit of a connection to the man." she said.
Before the group could ask more, some other guests walked in, and Claire had to go back to her work.
The table quickly got quiet as to how they should proceed. After a solid minute of silence, Amelia decided to speak.
"Well, why don’t we maybe do a bit of an introduction."
"I am Amelia Swanson, me and Jimmy grew up in England, in the streets of Middlesbrough. We used to distribute some stuff, and eventually we got caught. We took the easy choice and went here to be 'rehabilitated'." Amelia said.
"He is a son of two drunks, and I was the daughter of a disgruntled priest who got arrested for selling drugs to church goers." Amelia continued.
"Damn..." Ophelia let out.
"Well, don’t think I can top that. My name is Ophelia Cosmatos. I am the daughter of the head of the Cosmatos crime family. I have seen the executions of people who tried to hurt me, and how my father planted drugs and weapons on one of my teachers, throwing him in jail just because he threatened me." Ophelia said.
"Oh, and I did see the members of Wolfgang in person once!" she continued with a smile on her face.
The group just watched her as Nadia quickly took over hoping not to think of what Ophelia had just told them.
"Well, I'm Nadia Odeh. I grew up on the streets with my mother. The both of us worked hard to move to a real home. Eventually, I got accepted into Elysium, but my mother got ill." Nadia started.
"Lung cancer. She is currently stationed in a hospital in France. I insisted to stay by her side, but she practically begged me to go here. To 'finally live a happy life,' she said." Nadia told the group, a sad look in her eye.
Hector gave her a seemingly understanding look, and it seemed to comfort her.
"My name is Hector Ramos. I used to live with my mother and... father." he stated, his words getting heavier with the mention of his father.
"We lived poor, but my father told me that I was born like a monster. How I should use that fact to fight. I think he used to be a pro boxer. But he taught me some fighting, and I got good. 6-year regional champion." Hector told us.
"Then... then..." Hector tensed up.
"I... I'm sorry I can’t." he said, taking a sip of wine. A tear flowing down his cheek.
Nadia gave him a pat on the back before Nicholas started.
"Well, I'm Nicholas Carrillo. I was born to some rich politicians, and before I could even walk, I was doing tests. IQ, strength, critical thinking, anything you could think of. I was born with an unusual high amplitude, and thus I was told I was better. I don’t know why though. But my parents made sure that I had the spotlight every time I could." he told them.
"Covering up any mistake I could make. Even the really bad ones. They must have been good. For I realized none really talked about that family after they disappeared..." Nicholas mumbled on.
Next was Abigail.
"Never knew my parents. Or maybe I once did but not anymore. I was captured and experimented on by the ISC for as long as I remember. I still don’t really understand why." she said, her hands shaking slightly.
"I was so alone. Even when I first got here, I was alone. I only hurt people, so I thought it was better if I was by myself. Locked away."
"It's like they said. A monster shouldn’t be free..." she mumbled.
A silence swept over once more.
"Wow, everyone here really is fucked. I guess the professor was right." Jimmy said with a laugh.
"See, you’re not that special." he continued.
Abigail looked at him confused.
"Everyone here is damaged. We might not understand what you went through. But that doesn’t matter. You’re a part of the 45 now. You aren't alone anymore."
