I walked around my empty apartment, looking at the marks on the timber floor where my furniture used to be. This place had never felt like home but it still seemed odd to me. Seeing all of it stripped back and leaving the place bare, it's as if I had never been here to begin with.
I walked out to the balcony with the black metal railing where I used to smoke in the morning. As I reached into my coat pocket, I thought I would light up one last time and take in the view. I couldn't watch the sunrise over the skyline anymore, but this would be my last sunset.
I flicked the lighter, the flame catching the tip of my cigarette as I took a drag. I exhaled slowly, watching the smoke dissipate into the evening air along with my memories of this place.
By this time tomorrow, I will be in a new city with a new name and a completely different life. It was a chance to start over. Leaving everything behind, I whispered a quiet goodbye to my past self.
As of today,
I am Spencer Lewis.
