Taru Aether Charsen has always wanted to escape the difficulties of her life in the tiered city of Shude, but Shude is not an easy place to escape.
A glinting tip cresting the brown cliffs of a vast canyon: that is all most people outside the city will ever see of it. Unlike the shimmering Nobles' levels at the top, however, most Shudeans live in their shadow, in the working caste's levels below.
Orphaned at birth and, therefore, destined to live a life of servitude until one kind soul sponsored her out of it, Taru is now one of those workers. This is not enough for her, however, and she is still determined to find adventure elsewhere. Taru is about to learn a hard lesson: not only should you be careful what you wish for, but also who might hear.
