When I awoke, Alek was already awake. Chase was deep in sleep. I stood up and climbed out of bed, joining Alek on the floor where he was sitting. He looked upset about something, but I didn't ask what. I let him speak first, so that he could decide whether he wanted to tell me what was wrong or not.
"I'm sorry for making things complicated and adding a lot more complications to this investigation. I just thought that those texts would never get out. I really want us to find Peter, though. We don't have to talk about the texts I sent him anymore, though. We can just forget that ever happened if you want." Alek explained.
"What do you want, Alek?" I asked. "Obviously, this is not something that we can just forget about. We can face the situation now, though." I responded. Chase, who had woken up sometime during our conversation, slid onto the floor on the other side of Alek and was now listening.
"I want a lot of things. I want to find Peter. I want to go have fun with my friends again. I want-" He stopped abruptly, and didn't finish what he was going to say. He looked between Chase and me. Chase leaned forward, wrapping his arms around Alek. I leaned forward and did the same. "It was hard. I lost the only person I could talk to, and I couldn't exactly talk to you two about what was going on with everything. He was all I had." Alek explained. I felt my world shatter, and I held him a little tighter. "I'm scared that he will be dead when we find out the truth behind what happened to him," Alek whispered. I was scared of the same thing, but I kept telling myself that Peter would be alive. I felt awful for Alek. He had to struggle with his sexuality and who he was while dealing with the loss of his friend.
Eventually, Alek pulled away from Chase and me. "I'll go microwave some of those frozen pancakes and grab some juice for us. Wait here for me." I responded. It was Alek's favorite thing to have for breakfast. I couldn't forget that, no matter how hard I tried.
When I returned to my room, Chase and Alek were arguing about something. Alek was in tears, and Chase seemed desperate to get his point across. I set the plates down and sat in front of them. "What is going on?" I asked. Chase flipped me off. Alek ignored me and looked away. "Get out. Both of you." I continued. They both looked up, shocked by what I said.
"I'm trying to find Peter, and I need you two to take me seriously. If I ask you what is going on, I would like an answer. Otherwise, you can get out of my house, and I will do this myself." I continued. Alek looked even more upset. He whispered out a quick apology, then excused himself to the restroom. I knew he needed time, so I let him walk away. I turned my glare to Chase, wanting to know what had happened in the short time that I had been gone.
"I just wanted him to admit that he still liked us. I told him that I knew he still had feelings for us, and it just went all wrong. He got upset with me." Chase ranted. "I'm so confused, and I just want a clear answer from someone." Chase continued. His voice was raised, and I knew Alek could hear him in my bathroom. I was thankful that my mom was at work. I took a few deep breaths and waited for Alek to return.
"Alek, do you still have feelings for us?" I asked. Alek looked down at the floor. He gave a slight nod. "What would you like to do about those feelings?" I asked. Alek looked up at me, then Chase, then away.
"Can we continue the investigation?" Alek asked, changing the subject. Chase looked irritated. He moved closer to Alek and gently moved Alek's head so that they were facing each other. Chase slowly and carefully moved toward him until his lips brushed Alek's. I felt my heart skip a beat, and I knew right then that I had stronger feelings than I thought for both of them. The kiss was over quickly, and I was still staring at the two of them. Their eyes darted between each other's and mine. Alek cleared his throat and pulled out the paper with all the names on it. "So we have it narrowed down to about 34 people. How are we going to figure out who is Unknown?" Alek asked. Chase looked even more annoyed with Alek, but he remained quiet.
We can go one by one and see who would most likely send this to Peter, or I can research the phone number to see who it belongs to." I responded, trying to ignore that I was still red after watching them kiss. "I think it would be easier for me to find whatever I can on the phone number." I continued, grabbing my laptop. I pulled up Peter's messages and opened an internet browser in another tab. I did research on the phone number, and found that the found was last used at the school.
"What are we going to do about that? There are a million phones in the school building," Alek asked. He was slightly shaking and fidgeting with whatever he could find. I pulled a Rubik's Cube out of my nightstand and tossed it to him. He gladly took it, mixing it up in his hands.
"Break in. Our school has no security. It can't be that hard," I responded. Chase and Alek sighed. Chase added a glare as well. "It would be our best option. If we ask the 34 people about Peter's disappearance, nobody is going to admit to being Unknown. I think we should get the list of who owns what sports lockers and the combinations from the office. Most people on this list participate in a sport. From there, we can figure out if anyone is hiding anything," I continued.
"Fine, but if we get caught, I'm blaming you," Chase sighed. Alek quickly agreed with Chase. I agreed as well. I didn't want to bring them down because of my plan.
"Great. I need all of you to go home, pack a bag with whatever you might bring, make sure your phone is fully charged, and grab a flashlight. We will meet at the school tonight," I responded. Chase and Alek agreed, and they went home to get ready.
