Marilou wondered what her brother did this morning. His azur gaze stood to the wall, yet he didn't do anything else. Earlier, she asked him if he was trying new seduction technics.
If she had to be honest, the teenager was worried. She had always seen her brother as a selfish, comic and teasing individual, yet she saw him this way. Vulnerable. That one morning, her older brother didn't do anything in particular, yet she had her time to dress up, brush her teeth and to read the first tome of Knights of Emerald.
Marilou had always ben a huge reader, a nerd. It's how they saw her at school: a nerd, a bookworm. That's so dumb, the girl thought, enjoying to read doesn't make us like that!
At the center of the action, the teenager focused on her book, watching it happen in her mind, like a movie.
Evidently, her mother had to knock on her door, a bittersweet smile playing on her lips. She looked excited, genuinely happy.
- Marilou, can I come in? Her mother questioned her, waiting for an answer
Marilou nodded her head distractly, lost in her adventure. Feeling her mother's hand on her thigh, the girl pulled herself out of her trance and dropped her novel to the side, shifting her attention towards her.
- Great. I wondered if you and your brother would like to explore the house, in the attic. Your father and I wondered if there was a second fridge.
Marilou's face became white. The idea of finding herself in those corridors didn't please her. It made her breath catch in her throat at the thought. Obviously, she didn't reveal it to her mother, because, once again, her reputation would be tarnished.
- Of course, it wouldn't bother me...the young girl lied, walking to her brother's room
Shannon thanked her with a grateful expression, as she stepped hesitantly. Hearing her brother mutter incoherent things motivated her.
Effectively, she went faster, banging Isaac's door and waited. Marilou didn't know what went through her head, yet she knew she wasn't a wimp.
- What? Asked her brother, with an annoyed voice, as always
His sister cleared her throat and held back, hoping he would turn to her someday. When he did dare look at her, she nodded her head and began talking.
- Mom wants us to go to the attic together, to see if there's a second fridge.
Marilou thought she had hallucinated, because she thought seeing Isaac shuddering and looking away. A few seconds later, the twins stepped downstairs courageously-mostly to hurry.
- If you're saying bullshit again, that you saw a ghost or something stupid, I'll hit you with a shovel. Isaac warned
- You don't even have a shovel, dumbass. She retorted coldly
Isaac stopped talking as both remained silent for about a minute. Suddenly, a breeze of air hit their faces. Isaac almost fell and stumbled, right before his sister catch him.
- That's...That's very odd...Isaac mumbled under his breath as he watched around, There aren't any windows.
Marilou didn't comment, because she knew that he was stating an evidence and she didn't know more than he did. Every response that ran through her mind was way too rude.
- Perhaps mom and dad forgot to close the entrance door, and it was windy outside? She proposed, trying to convince herself
Isaac shook his head. Impossible. They both felt the wind hitting them from their right, and not from upstairs.
Instinctively, their eyes met, filled with worry. Isaac hesitated telling his sister what he thought seeing by the window, yet he closed his lips. He didn't want to burden her with that, and he didn't want to look like a coward either.
- Earlier, you were shaking as if you were in the the middle of a tornado.. Marilou commented, furrowing her brows
- I-I thought I had seen something pass by the window...Admitted Isaac, avoiding his sister's insistent glare, I don't want to talk about it.
Marilou rolled her eyes and sighed deeply. None dared to move. They stood at the same place. Their terror took over them, with the windy breeze they felt five minutes ago.
They couldn't explain it. In some way, Marilou thought that Isaac lived something weird as well. She didn't want to ask him, afraid of sounding stupid.
Isaac grabbed her sister's hand robotically. He didn't dare pronounce the words "I am scared", and yet he thought it deep into himself, his heart knocking against his chest.
Marilou startled, her shoulders slumping down. Her gaze was lost in thin air, and she looked possessed. Isaac didn't notice it right away; he was too busy worrying. When he did, he froze up than decided to act. He shook Marilou's shoulder, trying to remind her who she was, desperate of getting her back.
- Wake up, Marilou, this isn't real...You're called Marilou Daniels, you're fifteen, and uh...uh...
Isaac felt like a fool for saying that, yet he felt like he did a great work. Fortunately, he didn't have to keep his act because her brother got back to herself and ran through the stairs hurriedly, the older following her.
Breathless, the teenagers manages to reach the ground floor. They felt their hearts beat fast, as they panted, traumatized. Now they knew it well: It was a haunted house.
At the worse moment, their mother came over, her eyebrows arched. She scrutinized them, noticing how exhausted they were. Bewildered, Shannon exhaled and patted Isaac's back.
- W-we're sorry, we didn't any fridge....Marilou apologized quickly, glancing away
- Y-yeah, we did a race to come back, b-but we really searched...Isaac added
Shannon raised her brows, before shrugging.
- That's fine. We still have a fridge up here. It can't be that dramatic...The mom said with a light voice
Marilou and Isaac laughed nervously as she left. Both remained troubled by their experience, and they knew that what they lived wasn't normal; it wasn't a coincidence.
At least, Marilou now knew that she had an ally in those situations; her brother Isaac.
