The sound of the pickaxes echoed throughout the excavation, located in the middle of nowhere, somewhere in Great Britain.
The exact location was of little importance to Edward Smith, the leader of the excavation. For him, the important thing was what would make him rich; he was obsessed with wealth and fame.
“Sir, sir!” shouted one of the workers.
Smith ran towards him, anxious for it to be what he was expecting.
“Tell me you found it.”
“I found it, it’s right here!”
Smith grabbed what the worker had in his hands.
“Yes, yes, I finally have it in my possession, Percival de Carpenter’s Diary!” Smith shouted in excitement.
“I will notify the museum that we found it,” said the worker.
Smith fell silent, looking at the worker.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,” he replied, with a sinister smile.
“I insist, I’ll do it. I don’t trust you.”
Smith looked at him irritably.
“Very well, you can use the phone in my office.”
Both went to Smith’s office, and when they entered, he closed the door.
“I’ll call the museum,” said the worker.
“Yes… about that… I’m afraid the museum will have to wait a little,” Smith said, pulling out a gun.
“W… wait, lower the weapon, I have a family!”
“I’ll give my condolences to your family…”
BANG!
Blood splattered the walls as the worker fell to the ground.
“No one will get this before I discover Excalibur,” he said as he laughed.
What Smith didn’t know was that someone was watching through the window.
Select sat in his office, gazing at the blue sky of New City.
“Another day, I suppose.”
The place was filled with history books and some photos.
Suddenly, someone knocks on the door.
“Yes?” Select asks.
“It’s me, Max.”
Select opens the door and lets the young man into his office.
“You called for me?” Max asks.
“Yes, I wanted to talk to you, Max.”
Both sit down.
“About what?”
“What you asked before, about Excalibur, I have information.”
“Really?” Max said excitedly.
“Edward Smith, my rival, has found something important to uncover Excalibur.”
“The famous Edward Smith!? How can you be rivals?”
“His obsession with fame and wealth is such that he would sell out his family for it, he’s not trustworthy. I know because I worked with him, and he almost tried to take my job.” Select explained.
Max nodded, surprised.
“I understand,” Max nodded.
“Excalibur is one of his biggest obsessions, and it seems that someone has asked him to search for Excalibur, a guy with the code name Mr. Boss.”
“Mister Boss? Not very imaginative…”
“If it’s coming from Smith, I wouldn’t be surprised,” Select replied.
“And what do I have to do with this?”
“You see, Max, I need your help, and I don’t trust anyone else.”
Max was astonished, looking firmly at Select.
“All right, I’ll help.”
“Good, you’ll have to help me find out where Edward is,” Select said, with a plan in mind.
“You’ll sneak into the director’s office and look through the documents for information.”
“What?!?” Max jumped.
“There’s no other choice.”
“And how exactly am I supposed to get in?”
Select smiled.
“Through the window.”
“You are joking, right?”
Select knocked on the director’s door, who opened it with a furrowed brow.
“What do you want, Select?”
“I need to speak with you for a moment.”
Outside the building, Max held tightly to the ledges of the wall to climb up.
“Why did I agree to this?”
He climbed slowly up to the window of the office. While they were talking, Max opened the window trying to make as little noise as possible.
“Inside!” He whispered to himself as he slipped silently through the office.
Once inside, he subtly made his way to a table full of papers. He rummaged through it until he found a very interesting letter. It said the following:
Dear Smith,
I hope your stay in London is enjoyable. We have your ticket ready for the high-speed train from London to Edinburgh, at 11:30 on October 25th.
Best regards.
“Bingo!” Whispered Max.
Suddenly, the director began entering the room, so Max quickly hid under a table.
“No way!” The director shouted about something that Max didn’t hear.
“By the way, I want you to know that Edward Smith is making great discoveries.”
“I didn’t know monkeys made discoveries” Select sarcastically remarked.
“Please, show some respect!”
Max slowly made his way toward the door.
“You don’t know Smith like I do,” Max heard Select say.
“Are you suggesting that I don’t know my employees?”
“Clearly, you know them perfectly,” Select said in a tone of irony that the director didn’t notice.
As the conversation continued, Max slowly moved closer to the door, but the director started moving toward him.
Realizing this, Select quickly approached the director.
“Director! I want you to know that you can count on me for anything.”
Taking advantage of the distraction, Max darted out like a flash.
Once outside the room, he waited for Select to appear.
“Any news?” Select asked Max.
“Smith will take a train from London to Edinburgh on October 25th, I don’t know the reasons.”
Select rubbed his hands together.
“Very well, Max, we need to catch a train.”
“Oh! And how are we going to catch it? Are we going to sneak in?” Max exclaimed excitedly.
Select was browsing with his computer.
“I thought it was going to be more exciting than looking for deals on the internet, to be honest,” Max admitted.
“Do you think I’m rich? We need to find something really cheap.”
Max looked disappointed at Select.
“I’ve got it! It’s a very good price!” Select exclaimed, excitedly.
He grabbed Max’s arm and ran off, pulling him along.
When the most famous stories and artifacts prove to be true, an ironic archaeologist with a lot of luck will have to face formidable enemies who want to use them for their plans.
From Excalibur to passing through Sleepy Hollow, the dangers will not end for Select and company.
