As the sun rose, Mom knocked on the doors of each boy to wake them up and prepare to visit their grandparents. Unhappily, Chris quietly went to get dressed. After breakfast and packing, The boys headed to the car, and the family drove deeper into the woods. They arrived at an old house that was built in the late 1800s, and their neighbors' houses are miles away from each other. The grandparents waited on the front porch to see the family.
"Hello everyone!" Greeted Grandma. "I have made some lunch!"
The family went inside and ate some lunch, and Dad had talked about his fishing journey to Grandpa, and Mom had talked about recipes with Grandma while both of the houses were quiet. When lunch was over, Grandpa suggested the boys come with him to help him rebuild the roof of an old shed. Mom and Dad remained at the house with Grandma.
"Boys. I'm glad to see you again. You have grown so fast, and you can't believe Johnny is going to be in high school in a few months. "Said Grandpa
"Yeah..." Said Johnny
Chris still remained quiet.
"Now, boys, I understand things are complicated between your parents and each other. I was like you, Chris, when I was your age. Making pranks to a grumpy old as well, and I was good at it and was punished as well," Grandpa winked at Chris.
Chris had a half-smirk and was as rank as Grandpa had pulled in his old days.
As the boys reached the old shed, Grandpa handed a hammer toward Chris and a bucket full of nails to Johnny. He would cheer them up by telling his stories about how he had pranked his neighbor Mr. Pendragon by putting a scarecrow to peek in the bedroom window when the poor guy would be sleeping or putting heavy pebbles in the potatoes sacks when he carried them to his house.
He had been eventually caught by Mr.Pendragon and had to work for him all summer long. He and Mr. Pendragon eventually became good friends, and then he would meet Mr. Pendragon’s daughter, and that daughter would be his future wife. The boys had a great time building the shed and listening or telling stories to Grandpa.
Just when they finished with the roof, fresh raindrops started hitting it.
Rain and thunder began. The boys and Grandpa headed home to get dry.
Their parents and grandma were preparing dinner
"The roast will take another 40 minutes, boys. You have to find something to do for now, "Said Grandma.
"Hey, let's go to the attic and see what old stuff. Suggested Johnny.
"Not a bad idea. ", responded Chris.
The boys went up the creek stairs and saw boxed-up stuff. They started to open things and look at them. They found old things from the 1930s-1950s that didn’t really interest them that much. Chris and Johnny would also find Christmas and Thanksgiving decorations.
Johnny then stepped on the floor board, and it moved a bit.
"The house is so old it's falling apart." Chris said this and started to peel the old board. Inside the board were many books and newspapers. There was one book, in particular, that caught Johnny's eye. It had strange symbols on it. Johnny picked it up and opened it.
"Freaky." Said Johnny.
"It looks like Grandma and Grandpa were secretly into a weird cult and probably hid it from us." Said Chris.
Johnny started to turn each pages until they saw an old photo and behind it was labeled 1890 Emrys Pendragon
"Well, I know where Grandma got her hairstyle inspiration from." Laughed Chris and Johnny.
"The guy looks like a poodle." Said Johnny.
"Haha, you are right!" Said Chris.
Chris grabbed a pen out of his pocket and started to draw the old photo.
"I have improved his look. Woof, woof"
The boys started to laugh and giggle more.
"Dinner is ready!" Shouted Mom down the stairs, so the boys could hear.
Chris and Johnny headed down the stairs, and Chris went to the kitchen. Johnny went to the guest room and decided to secretly put the book in his bag.
If his grandparents are in a cult, he would want to know why. Then he also headed to the kitchen. Grandma and Mom made some roasted ham with mashed potatoes and asparagus.
The family actually had a great time eating and talking to each other normally. After dinner, they went to a marathon of an old Wild West show.
On Sunday, the boys spend more time with their parents and in the afternoon, the family said goodbye and left the house and drove back to the town.
