It is said that one of a one hundred thousand couples between alphas and omegas are predestined, and that is almost impossible for them to meet. Therefore, predestined was supposed to be just a myth, but now, I had seen with my own eyes that it was real, and the worst part was that it took away everything I had in a blink of an eye.
Because Matt was everything I had.
Since that day that I was left behind in the middle of the street with nothing more than my clothes on, a bit of money, and Matt's credit card he had given to me, I had no idea what to do.
I walked aimlessly until I reached a hotel, where I spent the night.
Counting from that day, I had practically been living here.
I could not come back to the place I once called home since he would be there, so I simply stayed here.
A week and a half had passed since that day. My heat had come that same night just as I predicted, and I didn't even had suppressants. I was so devastated that I spent that night suffering all the heat symptoms until I fainted. Next day, I gathered some strength to speak to the guy at the front desk using the room phone, who luckily was a beta, to help me get some suppressants.
I could not get off bed, so he even came in with a glass of water and the pill. I could see his nervousness, so I apologized for the inconvenience. Before leaving, he left several pills for the following days.
When my heat was over three days later, I could only stay in bed, without even having the strength to cry for the alpha who once swore to love me forever and was willing to share his entire life by my side.
Sadness had completely invaded me, but there was something else.
Anger.
I was so angry with the horrible destiny which dared to cross my path by creating a predestined for my partner. Nobody should be guided for a traced path; everyone should be able to create it themselves. We are masters of our destiny, that's how it should be.
He was my alpha, but he was easily persuaded.
Pretty much weak.
And he didn't even stop to think for a moment about me. On his lifelong partner.
I thought he cared about me. I thought he loved me the same way I love him.
But none of that matters anymore.
I don't need an alpha, and much less an already established destiny.
I preferred to be on my own from now on.
A week and a half was time enough to assimilate the whole situation.
To get sad and mad.
During all that time, the beta receptionist had taken care of me by bringing me the food I ordered the days I was hungry, although he took advantage of the opportunity to charge for the room, which was probably what he intended from the beginning. Even so, he was very helpful.
Since I had spent so many days like this, I decided that it was time to save my tears.
I was not this weak, I never was. That's why I had to gather all the strength I needed and went out to look for a job, since I just had Matt's credit card and was not planning on using it at all, besides, I was running out of the money I had and going back home was not an option anymore.
While I was still in high school, my parents had supported me, and as soon as I graduated, I immediately moved with my alpha, who had been the one in charge of everything. At first, I felt bad for doing nothing more than staying at home, so I searched for part-time jobs and do not feel like a hindrance.
Because I'm an omega, but not a burden.
Society is a bit cruel with omegas because of our 'condition,' so it's kind of hard to get a job easily. More than anything it is because of our heat, since that of many omegas is not stable and could be dangerous, considering that we could have alphas coworkers, or might even encounter one on the street and be attacked.
Still, the last job I had was a long time ago, in which I couldn't be more than a month because I was almost attacked by an alpha. Fortunately, my boss had arrived in time and stopped the alpha before things got any worse.
I didn't think it would happen to me, but it did. As soon as I got home with Matt, who had picked me up, he started yelling at me for being so irresponsible to go to work at a place where there were dominant alphas without telling him. But then he hugged me and told me not to worry him like that ever again.
I pushed that memory to the back of my mind.
I had to look for a job, even though this time I could not get fake papers to appear as a beta, since I didn't have enough money for the procedure.
In the past I was only able to get part-time jobs with my fake papers as a beta, since it was the only way to get accepted, and bosses who accepted me used to be betas, since they are unable to feel pheromones at all.
Also, since I was living with Matt, his pheromones were impregnated in me so that nothing happened to me, until that last job where that asshole dominant alpha appeared and didn't care about anything.
But now that I was on my own, it's probably going to be even more hard to get a job.
As soon as I went down the stairs, the beta looked at me in amazement.
I approached him a bit embarrassed and apologize for everything I had put him through.
– Please don't worry, I'm glad you are feeling better. – He said with a friendly smile.
Truth was that I didn't feel any better, but I had to do something to survive.
I took leave of him, and I got out of the hotel. It was an area I didn't know very well, but I had to learn to navigate if I was going to stay around here for a long time.
Since my heat came right after I arrived at the hotel, I still remembered that sensation as if I could die for not having my alpha to help me calm down.
I had had him by my side for six long years, and suddenly not anymore. It was obvious that my body would suffer heat symptoms even more.
But I survived thanks to that beta's help.
I was aware that my pheromones were stronger now because, although it had been almost a week since my heat, I was locked in the hotel room, and surely it was still on me.
All I could do was suppress my pheromones, hoping that would help a little.
I was born as a dominant omega. I was not quite sure what made me different from the other omegas, but I was almost certain that it was thanks to that that I had always been good at repressing my pheromones, in addition to having a fairly regular heat cycle. Although because of my family, I had not managed to discover more of my dominant side.
I started walking down the streets, looking for some 'people needed' notice and coming into convenience stores asking for a job, but as soon as I told them I was an omega, I was immediately rejected, saying it was because they had enough people.
Giving up started sounding like a good option a couple of hours later, and even made me think of going for some fake beta papers using Matt's credit card but decided to try a coffee shop one last time. It was pretty similar to the one where Matt and I used to go to, but it was a lot smaller and looked... Comfortable.
As soon as I get in, the bell placed on the door rang. I felt that the place was quite quiet, even conveying calm. I looked carefully around the entire establishment.
Tables were made of wood, but with a delicate design, as were the chairs. The ceiling had a design too, which caught my attention because of the relief it had in some parts. I liked the detail of the hanging spotlights. On the back wall, there were a couple of pictures with inspirational quotes on them.
– Welcome. – The elderly man behind the counter smiled in my direction.
I cast my eyes upon him. He was quite an old person and could not felt any pheromone from him, so I supposed he was a beta.
– Good afternoon. – I replied, approaching the counter.
His smile was serene and happy. Without even noticing, I had smiled back at him.
– Excuse me, are you by any chance looking for staff? – I asked, looking at him directly in his eyes.
The old man looked at me without saying a word. Before he could reply, someone else came from the back door and exchanged glances with me, so I bowed my head in greeting.
– Good afternoon.
– Oh my, good afternoon. – The elderly woman replied with a pretty smile.
She reached the man behind the counter and took his arm. I observed their arms intertwined and reminded me that feeling from that last time I grabbed Matt's arm that day, when he made me that happy at hearing him say we could form a bond to be lifelong partners.
– Boy? – I heard suddenly, bringing me out of my thoughts.
– Oh, I'm sorry, what were you saying? – I asked, almost giving up on working there since I had ignored them for being lost in my thoughts.
Instead of that, the person next to the elder man smiled affectionately.
– I said of course you can work here. – She repeated taking me by surprise. Both the gentleman and I saw her in amazement.
– What? – The man said, getting ahead of myself.
– Honey, we will have more time for ourselves, and he also looks like a good kid. – She explained, smiling at me.
I stared at her, still bewildered.
Was I just accepted? Just like that?
– Really? – I asked to make sure.
– Yeah, of course. You can start whenever you want.
– Now? – I replied instantly, without thinking.
Both laughed and I flushed slightly.
She left the man's arm and walked around the counter, standing in front of me.
– Well, not that soon, dear. – She stated, grabbing my arm softly and guiding me to one of the tables. – You can come tomorrow morning to teach you the basics.
I sat where I was told to, and the lady sat in front of me. The man walked over to us and sat next to his partner.
In the end, they just asked for my name and if I was of legal age. The beta man at the counter had turned out to be the owner, while the lady who appeared later was his wife.
And an omega.
They grabbed their hands over the table all the time, and I could notice they were a very close and loving couple, which made me feel jealous. Seeing them like that made me think that this could have been my future.
I tried to pull myself together.
– Thank you very much for accepting me. I'll give my best. – I thanked, getting up from the table and bowing slightly.
– Don't worry, dear. I know by experience that an omega can hardly get a job nowadays. People are so afraid that something might happen.
– Or because of the free week they have by law because of their heat. – Her husband added, receiving a playful blow on his shoulder from the lady.
– You don't have to worry about that. Taking suppressants is enough for me, so I don't need that free week. – I replied to reassure him.
They both looked at me for a long second.
– That's not ok, you should take better care of yourself. – The lady reproached.
I was sure it will not be necessary, but I remained silent.
– That's right, boy. Well, then I guess we will see you tomorrow. – The man stood up and held out his hand to me. I took it and thanked them both. I was able to get a full-time job that fast and with people that seemed honest and nice.
As soon as I was outside the cafe, I let out a long sigh. I walked about two blocks until I reached the hotel, and before crossing the street to get to the entrance, I looked up at the sky.
It was still clear and with few clouds. It was kind of early and didn't have much to do, but it had been a good day.
I crossed the street and go into the hotel, bowing at the receptionist guy, who was a different one, and went to my room, lying in bed with nothing to do, until night came, and I went to sleep early to wake up on time.
Next day, I arrived at the cafe at five-thirty in the morning, finding the owners in pajamas.
I was always an early riser, plus I had that kind of excitement from the first day of work that didn't let me sleep well.
The man opened the door rubbing his eyes.
– We should have told you the hour. – The owner said in a hoarse voice.
– I'm sorry. – I apologized for being too early.
I went in and sat at one of the tables, waiting for them to change their clothes and come down again. The omega invited me to have breakfast with them, but I hadn't had much of an appetite since that day, so I politely declined.
As soon as they came down the stairs, they began to teach me everything from customer service to basic coffee preparation. Seeing I was a fast learning, they decided to teach me the rest when the clients came so I could learn first watching them and the with practice.
We finished with the training early, so I spent the rest of the free time just watching the empty streets, while they chatted happily.
The cafe opened at seven in the morning, and since then, the owner stayed by my side to watch me how I was doing it.
Being behind the counter, first thing I could notice was that the place was never full. One or another person would come in from time to time, so most of the time were just the three of us. The omega told me she used to stay on the second floor where they live, but since it was my first day, she decided to stay with us.
On the free times, which were more than expected, they told me about their life. The first thing their said was that they had a son who was an alpha and was living abroad for now, and I could meet him once he came to visit them, that usually happened on holidays. They also said that the cafe had been open for almost twenty years, and it was now considered retro, so young people often came here to take some pictures, but it was still not that common.
– That’s why we hope an omega as pretty and handsome as you on the counter would attract more clients. – The omega joked.
– That's what we have you for, honey. – Her husband replied, kissing her hand.
Both chuckled confidently and I managed a weak smile, trying to ignore that empty feeling on my chest.
Days passed and another thing I discovered, but this time about myself, was that I developed some kind of resentment towards the alphas, since they reminded me of what happened with Matt.
The owners were friendly, but they started to reprimand me for looking at alpha clients in a bad way or responding to them in a bad way.
They said most of the clients reacted to my looks, without even notice my subgenre, so I should be nice.
When I got used to handling the cash register, the service and the preparation, the owners decided to leave me alone at the counter, although they were always watching and helping me when they saw me in trouble.
Even with their help, I was basically the only one who ran the cafe. I had been told that they used to do it amongst themselves, but now that I was here, there was no need for them to do it anymore.
– In fact, we were waiting for someone to come and ask for a job, but no one did. You were the only one. – The omega said.
– But you could have put a a sign outside. – I replied.
– Yeah, but that's not funny. – Both laughed with complicity.
That way, I started to spend most of my day on the cafe, trying not to react badly to the alphas and serving as best as I could. That helped me to keep my mind occupied, avoiding thinking about Matt.
