Kai stormed back and forth. His anxious thoughts devoured him with each passing second. A tiny bead of sweat formed on his cheek as he wondered how it would be possible to snatch two cars without being noticed.
"Is everything alright, sweetheart? Did you eat breakfast?" his mother asked as she descended from upstairs with a smile on her lips.
Hearing her voice drove away Kai's worries for a brief moment, causing a warm smile to paint itself on his face. "It's nothing; I'm just worried about a job interview, is all," he said, lying through his teeth. He walked toward her and pulled her into a tight hug. "Also, I already had breakfast. I made pancakes for you since I know they're your favorite, so be sure to dig in," he said as he pulled away.
His mother's eyes sparkled with joy. She reached up and gently pitched his cheek. "Aww, you're so sweet. I couldn't have asked for a better son," she remarked, seeming in a better mood than how depressed she was last night when she figured out about the shady dealings he's been involved with.
Kai's smile grew wider as he ate up her compliment. "And you're the best mom I could've ever asked for," he remarked, causing her to smile warmly at him. "I'm going out. I'll see you later," he said with a wave as he exited out of the house.
Kai brought his hand up to his lips, chewing frantically at his fingernail. His light emerald green eyes watched as the sunlight above died down, preparing to give birth to a beautiful starry-filled sky. "Damn, this sucks. I already regret accepting this stupid job," he grumbled, shoving his hands into his pockets. He rounded a corner and walked down an alleyway.
Kai's eyes widened when he heard the sound of tires slowly crunching over gravel behind him. He glanced over his shoulder only to be breathless when he saw an expensive limo behind him. The hell? he thought with furrowed brows as it drew closer. He abruptly halted in his tracks, swallowing his spit when the car pulled him next to him.
Hiss!
The sound of the tinted window rolling down filled his eardrums. He watched the window shift downward, crawling back into the car to reveal a man wearing a fancy black suit.
"Can I help you with something?" Kai spoke out with uncertainty, lacing his voice.
The corners of the man's lips curved up into a smirk, hearing Kai's question. "Yes, you can. I heard from various sources that you're quite skilled in getting work done without any problems. So, I wanted to make you a job offer," the man suggested with an amused twinkle in his eyes.
Kai shrugged his shoulders, raising an eyebrow at the man. "Yeah, sorry, man. I only do work for sources that I have information about, and not to sound rude, but this is my first time meeting you," he pointed out, voicing his suspicions out loud without any concern for how the man would react.
The man let out a soft chuckle and shook his head. "Oh, don't worry about it. I can understand your concerns. How about we play a small game where you can earn money, then you can see for yourself if you are interested in the job offer I have for you to make easy money for doing nothing but test out products for our company," the man explained with a smile.
Uncertainty stabbed into Kai's gut, spinning around the contents he had eaten this morning to the point where he felt like throwing it up. Why do I get such a bad feeling from this guy? I guess it won't matter if I take up his offer. Then I can see for myself if he's worth trusting or not, he thought before nodding his head. "Alright, I'll take you up on your offer. I'll play your game," Kai stated, crossing his arms across his chest.
The man seemed quite pleased with Kai's answer. "Wonderful, I'm glad you're considering my offer. First, I'll introduce myself; my name is Hayden. I work for a top company that is searching for people who will volunteer to test out our products before they go out to the public," Hayden explained enthusiastically as he reached down into his upper jacket pocket, pulling out a small pair of white dice.
"For our game, it'll be a fun one. All you have to do is predict what the numbers on the two dice will end up equalling, it doesn't sound too hard, right? Each time you get it right, you'll get paid. Should you guess wrong once you have to sign the contract to join in our trials? Fair?" Hayden asked with a grin, waiting to hear Kai's response.
Every alarm bell screeched out inside Kai's mind to not accept this shady man's offer. Ignoring his better judgment, he nodded in his head. "You're on. But don't be shocked when I end up beating you," he stated with confidence.
"Okay. So, what's your first guess?" Hayden asked while playfully juggling the dice in his hand.
After thinking about it momentarily, Kai shouted out, "Six!"
Hayden smiled before tossing the dice outside the car window. They bounced around on the pavement before rolling to a halt. "Wow, not bad. You're pretty good at this," he praised when both dice had the number three on them easily, which was equal to Kai's guess of six. "Here's one payment," he said, handing out a two-hundred dollar bill.
Kai stared down at it in shock before taking it from Hayden. He held it up to the light, not believing for a second it was real money. He gulped when he realized it wasn't counterfeit. "Alright, you managed to grab my attention; let's go another round," he suggested, causing Hayden to smirk in delight.
"I have no complaints, but remember the moment you fail. You're signing that contract," Hayden brought up. He opened the car door and reached down, picking the dice back up. "So, what's your new guess?" he asked, curiosity beaming in his eyes.
Kai held his chin within his index finger and thumb as he deeply thought about his next choice. "I'll go with eight," he stated with a look of determination on his face.
"Let's see," Hayden stated before tossing the dice once again. They bounced around before rolling to a halt. "You're doing pretty good," he stated when each dice had the number four on it, equaling up to eight. He reached down into his pocket once again. This time, he pulled out a six-hundred dollar bill and handed it to Kai.
This guy is a literal gold mine, Kai thought in disbelief as he took the money. Every nerve and muscle in his body screamed out for him to stop playing the game, but he ignored all the warnings going off in his mind. "Let's go one more round; this time, I choose eleven," he stated with a hint of confidence in his voice.
"Eleven it is. Let's see what we get," Hayden remarked after collecting the dice off the ground and tossing them once again. The dice roll around in a hypnotizing dance.
Kai's blood ran cold when the last dice moved from the number five to six, throwing off his guess by one number. He stared down at the dice while dread loomed over him.
"Ouch, that sucks. You were so close. But don't feel bad, you can earn easy money just like that by trying out our products. As our deal, you can sign here," Hayden stated after reaching into the car to receive a couple of pieces of paper and a pen. He handed it over to Kai and pointed to the part that required his signature.
Kai's arm trembled as his hand hesitantly hovered over the paper, almost begging him not to sign it. With a gulp, he forced himself to write his name on the paper and handed it back to Hayden.
"Wonderful work, Kai. I look forward to our time working together," Hayden claimed, gesturing to the car.
Kai cocked his head to the side in confusion. "Huh? I'm sorry I can't go with you right now. I have to finish a job first, and then I can probably..." he stared before he froze when Hayden snatched something shiny from within his jacket and aimed it directly in Kai's face.
"I'm being nice to you. But my niceness has a limit on it. I won't ask you a third time. Get in the damn car, or you'll lose a limb right now!" Hayden threatened with a dark look in his eyes.
Terror consumed Kai's senses. I fucked up bad this time; Kai thought as his entire body shook harder from fear. Without saying anything else, he got into the car. He stared down at the ground as Hayden entered the limo and shut the door.
"Don't look so down. I promise you'll have fun in our experimental trials," Hayden stated with a big grin on his face, making Kai go pale.
