She actually came back to see him. It was hard for him to believe. She had been through so much but yet she kept her promise. He heard Alice stayed in most of the morning and afternoon. “Lucky has something to say to you.” What could the cat have to say to him? That cat and Alice were close, but he couldn’t help but have a lingering feeling. It made Luke nervous just by being around him. “I’m thankful that you were able to save Alice. You did a great job.” What a surprise. He had thought Lucky didn’t like him. “You’re welcome. I’ll do my best in the future, even better of a job.” “Good.” He said, clearly satisfied with the response. “What did the doctor say?” Alice reached to touch his head, but he instinctively pulled back from the pain.
“Oh. I’m sorry. Just rest as long as you need to. Cal is taking me to the mage tower tomorrow. He has work to do, and he is worried about me.” “That’s great. It will be nice to see your future workplace. The doctor isn’t too worried, he says I just need a lot of rest.” He did say rest was important, but he didn’t tell Alice the whole truth. The doctor had told him that it was a miracle he was still alive. That fate was on his side, and he should thank the gods. He felt grateful to still be alive. He prayed to be stronger and healthy enough to protect those he cares about. He started to feel sleepy. “I’ll let you get some rest.” She said and gave him a warm hug.
Alice’s viewpoint
She had to get up earlier than usual. Today was the first time she would ever be in the tower. This would hopefully be a lot better than what happened at the market. She still felt shivers down her spine when she thought of the scenes she saw. Alice and Lucky were going together today. They were inseparable. It was like this ever since the orphanage. She did have fond memories there, even though they were far and few between. She met up with Caldrith at the foyer of the mansion. “There you are.” He smiled kindly at her. He was a lot kinder to her ever since the devastating massacre. It wasn’t like he was mean to her before, just distant. “Are you ready?” “Yes, I’ve never been more ready.”
“That’s good.” She stepped outside the mansion breathing in the fresh air. She wanted to step onto the lush grass in her bare feet. She used to do that at the orphanage. That was one thing that always brought her joy. “I’ll teach you teleporting magic one day.” She didn’t even know magic like that existed. “Why didn’t you teleport us the first time?” “I honestly thought it would be a better time in the carriage for you. I thought we could at least get to know each other.” He wanted to get to know her. It didn’t seem like it before. He was so cold in the beginning. Maybe almost losing her he realized how much he cared for Alice.
“Most of the mages at the tower use this type of magic to get inside the building. Although we can still get in from the outside, it is heavily guarded. It’s a hassle to go that way inside.” “Oh. That’s cool. You can just teleport to your office?” “Of course.” That was amazing. Magic is such a spectacular thing. Alice couldn't wait till she was the leader of this place.
“It can make you dizzy when you first travel this way. Are you ready?” “Okay, hold on to my arm. Lucky can hold on to you or me. It’s up to him.” Of course he held on to Alice. In a whoosh she appeared in front of a desk with paperwork building up to the ceiling. She had to steady herself from falling over. Lucky jumped off her shoulder and landed on the stone floor in front of her. “Are you okay?” They asked simultaneously. “Yes. It only made me dizzy for a second.” She looked around. “This is the tower. It looks like a regular office. Well, except for those bottles.” On a shelf were unlabeled glass containers with colorful liquids in them. There were all the colors of the rainbow and more in the range of pigment. “Well, I need to have an office. I can’t believe they put all this paperwork on my desk. I’ll have to get my assistant to start on it. He must be slacking off.” As soon as he finished his sentence a young man walked into the office. He had the strangest colored hair she had ever seen. It was lime green. But for some reason it seemed to fit him. “Hello, Caldrith. I’ll get right to the paperwork.”
He noticed me once he tore his eyes from Cal. “Oh, this must be your new apprentice. Your name is Alice, correct?” “Oh, yes, it is.” She piped up. It was nice they already knew about her. He walked up to shake her hand. “It’ll be nice to work together in the future.” “Oh, yes. I’ll look forward to it.” His eyes gleamed at her with excitement and joy. He seemed to like her. That was great since she eventually would get to work here in the future.
“I’ll give you a tour around the tower if you want to go.” the assistant said. She was so caught up in the whole event that she almost forgot to ask his name. “I’m sorry. I didn’t ask your name?” “It’s okay. My name is Sebastian. But you can call me Seb.” “Okay Seb, please show me around the facility.” “It would be my pleasure.” With that she left with Seb saying goodbye to Cal. Lucky was trailing behind her looking at all the magical devices and books. She wondered what he was thinking. “Now, this is where the experiments are held.” She looked and saw the red crystals from the beast Luke killed. “Isn’t this dangerous to have these?” “Oh, we are trying to keep them from respawning. It has had some success.” Again, she felt drawn to touching it. At the very least she knew why now.
He must have noticed her staring at the crystal. “There is nothing to worry about. The mages here know what they are doing. Trust me.” She wasn’t entirely worried about that. She knew that they were capable. But she felt that helping them destroy the crystals was her duty to the world. If she was the only one that could stop whoever “him” was, she had to tell someone. Maybe she should talk to Cal despite what Lucky had said. His worries were legit. They could lock her up and experiment on her. Who knows what could happen? She pushed past those thoughts. “There’s much more to see. Although the most interesting part was this.” “That’s okay. I want to see the whole building.”
They toured some interesting areas afterwards. At least they were interesting to her. The records room and the library with all the most intricate spells. These were for much more experienced mages than herself. She would get there one day. She wanted to go back and look at the crystal again. It wasn’t something she didn’t want to believe. That a devious creature could come out from something so beautiful. “Well that was the tour. I’ll take you back to Cal.” “I can find my own way. If that’s okay.” “Yeah. If you want to. I have to do paperwork anyways. I’m getting behind on it as we speak.”
This was her chance to go back and look around the experiment room. Maybe there was something that could tell her more about where they came from. Lucky wasn’t exactly telling her who or what this being was. He was keeping her in the dark. She didn’t know why. She had decided she would have to find out for herself. Looking around the room she made sure the coast was clear. The last thing she wanted was to be questioned about why she was in there. They would hopefully think she was being nosey, not doing something nefarious. She looked for some books to hopefully shed some light on this war they were waging. Lucky came behind Alice and startled her. “What are you doing?” “Nothing, just looking through some of the paperwork. Maybe they can tell us more about what these beings are.” He looked annoyed. “I told you they were created by him.” “You won’t tell me who” him” is. Shouldn’t I know.” “All you need to know is that you’ll be the one to face him. You need to start getting prepared for that.”
Cal appeared behind us. “What are we talking about?” He said. You shouldn’t be here by yourself. I shouldn’t have left Seb to escort you around.” “It’s not his fault. I was just curious.” “Well you can always ask me. There is no need to snoop around.” “Well, there’s something we need to tell you. But in your office.” “Fine. Come, let’s talk.”
