Chapter 2: Awakening in the New World

Chapter 2: Awakening in the New World

Oct 26, 2024

Light.

Soft, golden, too-warm light hit me like a gentle slap. I blinked, squinting into it, my brain sluggishly swimming up from the deep, dark sea of unconsciousness. My head throbbed, a distant ache I couldn’t quite shake off. Everything felt… off. The air was warm, too warm, and smelled faintly of wood and… flowers?

I cracked an eye open and groaned. I expected the harsh, sterile ceiling of a hospital room or maybe the cold, clinical gleam of my lab. But this? This was way, way too fancy. I was staring at a canopy bed—yes, a full canopy bed, with drapes that looked like they’d been ripped straight out of a Renaissance fair. Who in the world even used these things anymore?

I shifted, trying to sit up, and immediately froze. My arms felt weird, lighter somehow, and weaker. And my hands—my hands were all wrong. Small, dainty, delicate, like they belonged to a teenager. I turned them over, staring in disbelief, and wiggled my fingers. They wiggled back.

“What in the…”

Before I could even try to process the whole “new hands” situation, the door swung open with a loud creak. Several people shuffled in, dressed like extras from a medieval drama. Flowing robes, stiff collars, even a bonnet on one woman. Seriously, this was either the most intense fever dream of my life, or I’d fallen into some kind of period piece cosplay.

“Oh, Lady Liana, thank the stars you’re awake!”

The woman in the bonnet rushed forward, her face full of worry, and without warning, she knelt beside the bed. Knelt. As if I were some kind of queen or saint or, apparently, a “Lady Liana.” She reached out, patting my arm with gentle, motherly concern. My brain short-circuited.

I opened my mouth, planning to say something intelligent, something demanding answers. But all that came out was, “Lady… Liana?”

“Yes, my lady,” she said, her voice shaky with relief. “You’ve been unconscious for days, after… well, after the fall.”

“Fall?” I echoed, dumbly.

“Yes, my lady.” She looked close to tears. “You were unwell, and we feared the worst.”

I stared at her, my brain spinning. This was impossible. Absolutely, completely impossible. But somehow, the impossibility of it all started to sink in. I wasn’t in my own body. I was… someone else.

A mirror stood across the room, the type of massive, ornate piece that only existed in museums or castles. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, still feeling weirdly light and off-balance, and managed to stand, stumbling over to the mirror. And there, staring back at me, was a young girl. A stranger. Dark brown hair, wide blue eyes, soft cheeks, and a high nose. She looked like she’d walked straight out of a painting.

“Who…” I whispered, touching my face. The skin felt soft under my fingers. “Who am I?”

One of the other women in the room, dressed in a plain but neat tunic, stepped forward, looking as if she’d break down in relief. “My lady, you are Lady Liana Valen, daughter of Duke Aldric Valen, ruler of the Northern Duchy.”

Daughter. Duke. Northern Duchy. I let the words sink in, but they slid around my mind like marbles, refusing to settle.

Okay, I thought, trying to keep calm. This is fine. I’m just… in the wrong body, in a medieval castle, and apparently everyone thinks I’m this noble’s daughter. No big deal.

And, of course, I was lying to myself. It was a huge deal.

The woman in the bonnet—who I now guessed must be some sort of maid or caretaker—approached again, concern deepening on her face. “Would you like me to fetch the Duke, my lady? He’s been terribly worried about you.”

“Yes,” I said, because what else was I supposed to say? I had no idea what was happening, but meeting this supposed “Duke” might help me get some answers.

While I waited, the women helped me sit back down on the bed, adjusting the pillows behind me as if I might break. It was all very surreal, like being a delicate piece of glass in a world I didn’t understand. And the longer I sat there, the more I started to realize the little things. My hands, my voice, my whole body felt different. I wasn’t in my own skin. This was someone else’s. It was like slipping into a costume I couldn’t take off.

A few minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed from the hall, growing louder until a man appeared in the doorway. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and looked to be in his mid-forties, with a weathered face and a neatly trimmed beard that matched his dark, intense eyes. He wore a doublet embroidered with silver and a thick, fur-lined cloak that looked like it weighed a ton.

“Liana,” he said, his voice rough but warm. The relief in his eyes was unmistakable. “Thank the heavens you’re awake.”

“Uh… hi,” I replied, and immediately regretted it. That was probably not the appropriate response for a nobleman in a medieval castle.

But he didn’t seem to mind. He moved closer, studying me with a gentleness that seemed out of place for such a formidable man. “You gave us quite the scare,” he said. “The fever struck so quickly, and then the fall… We feared…” His voice broke off, and he looked away, as if the thought was too painful.

“Sorry,” I said, awkwardly, not sure what else to say. This was apparently my… father? Or at least this body’s father. It was strange, looking at this powerful man and knowing he cared so deeply for a girl he thought was his daughter—a girl who, technically, wasn’t me.

“Don’t apologize,” he said, giving me a stern but affectionate look. “You’re safe now, and that’s all that matters.”

I nodded, pretending to understand, but in reality, my head was spinning. I didn’t know anything about this “Lady Liana” or this world I’d found myself in, and I certainly didn’t know what had happened to bring me here. But one thing was clear: I was trapped in the body of a medieval noble’s daughter, in a world that looked like it hadn’t discovered basic hygiene yet.

The Duke—my father, I reminded myself—sat down on the edge of the bed, looking at me with a mixture of relief and worry. “You must rest, Liana,” he said, his voice softer now. “The healers say it will take time for you to fully recover.”

I nodded, though a part of me balked at the idea of lying around in bed. I had a million questions, but something told me blurting out “Hey, I’m actually a grown woman from another world who’s only slightly freaking out right now” wouldn’t go over well.

Instead, I forced a smile and said, “Thank you, Father.”

The word felt foreign in my mouth, but he seemed pleased, his expression softening even more. He reached out, patting my hand gently. “You’re a brave girl, Liana. You always have been.”

With that, he rose to his feet, nodding to the women who hovered nearby. “Let her rest. She’ll need her strength.”

They all nodded in unison, and as he left, they returned to their positions around the room, as if waiting for further instructions. But I was far too overwhelmed to think about what they might expect from me.

As the door closed and the room fell silent, I took a deep, steadying breath. Somehow, I was stuck in another world, in another person’s life, and I had no idea why or how. All I knew was that I had to find a way to survive here—and maybe, just maybe, make sense of this strange, unbelievable new life I’d woken up to.

But as I glanced around at the grand room and the medieval decor, I realized one more thing: if I was going to be stuck here, then I'm going to find a way to survive.

Alright, Liana, I thought to myself. Let’s see what this world is made of.
