Burn the witch

Writer - CottonKitten, Character - Calan Belhaven

One would say a mirror can only reflect what is presented before it. A tool which many fail to see the many uses of. Its flat surface being the perfect door, just waiting to get an opportunity to open. Though not many know where to find the key.

How miserable to be one of them, to not know what they are missing when it's right before your eyes. Like the many energies around us that impact our daily lives, for better or worse. A buzzing vibration erupting from the surface, like a ticklish sensation stroking the inside of my skin.

I couldn’t help but smile as I moved my fingertips above the surface of the statue before me. The same statue of Saint Andrew that my father would often speak of. But that meant nothing to me. Only the energies that erupted from it by the limestone it was made from.

- Lord Belhaven.

The mere mention of my title made me spin around, seeing one of the guards walking up to me from the corridor.

- Lord Baron Belhaven is expecting you in the grand hall.

I gave the guard a once over, the dark circles being visible to the eye and his aura clearly exhausted.

- …I see, I will be there shortly.

I said as the guard took a bow before heading off, leaving me to go see my father. I had no choice but to make my way towards the grand hall. Once I was standing in front of the grandiose doors leading into the hall where my father was awaiting me, I took a moment to take a deep breath before letting the guards open it.

Behind the doors at the end of the large open space stood my father alongside my sister, Lord Baron and young lady of Belhaven. The silence in the grand hall was suffocating, as I made my way towards them.

- So you have decided to grace us with your presence. How kind of you brother.
- I don’t mind charity work.
- Silence.

We both went quiet. There was certainly no room for further arguments once our father had spoken, especially no room for siblings to quarrel.

- I'm not here to listen to the two of you argue. I was hoping that both of you would join me. I'm heading off to an important banquet.
- How long will you be gone?
- We. How long will we be gone. I am asking both of you to join me.
- Of course father, I would be honoured to come with you to such an important event. There should be nothing more important than the relations and future of our lands.
- Certainly Annabelle, I agree. Calan?

I did my best not to roll my eyes into the back of my skull and let them get stuck there. The thought of gouging out my own eyes sounded more appealing right now than to join the two of them on this trip. I swallowed any dry retort, deciding it was perhaps best to keep things civil but short.

- Then I wish you good luck on your travels.

Deciding it was a sufficient answer, I turned to walk away, hopefully being able to salvage the rest of this day along with my mood, but before I could do so, my ears couldn’t help but pick up the hushed words from my sister.

Disgrace.

I let the word linger in the air as I let the large doors shut behind me. Much like her dislike for me didn’t matter, so did her words. I had heard it all before, a thousand or so times over. Nothing new there.

I found myself in my quarters, the door closed like always to isolate myself from the prying eyes of this town and my family. One of the few places I could get some peace of mind and tend to my own private matters.

I picked up my quill and began to draw lines in black on a blank piece of parchment. The dark ink swiftly began to form a familiar pattern. Once finished I brought out a bottle of essence along with a pinch of herbs and sprinkled them on top of the paper before letting my hand hover above the symbol. And as if a sudden strike of lightning had hit my room, the paper instantly caught aflame. Energy began to surge around me, making any nearby light source double in size and intensity. A pungent smell of lavender and herbs began to emit from the burning paper, filling my nose and beginning to cloud most of my senses. It was a simple form of spell that would give my father and sister protection on their travels.

To aid and support them the only way I knew how.
