A hat tip to one of the greats. PALE OF SETTLEMENT is hugely inspired and influenced by Philip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS series. The scene here where Rivke hides in the ark and hears a bunch of stuff she's not supposed to is an homage to the opening of THE GOLDEN COMPASS when Lyra hides in a closet and hears a bunch of stuff she's not supposed to (which in turn is an homage/scathing critique of THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE).
