*This Chapter Takes Place From Elena's Point of View*
We ran down the stairs leading to ground 0. We were met by a horde of withered running upward towards the commotion on the main floor. Ethan fired at them with his rifle, and I kicked them down the stairs. Running over them, we shot the ones struggling to get up. Suddenly we heard the sound of a collapsing floor and metal striking against the ground as the walls shook.
"What was that?", Ethan asked, breathing heavily as he wiped the sweat off his forehead.
"Sounds like it came from the main floor", I replied, reloading my pistols.
"I hope Tyrell's alright.", Marina said as she laid her back against the wall.
"Yeah, me too. But we have to keep going... otherwise his sacrifice will be in vain.", I stated, now ready to move forward.
They both nodded and we moved down the stairs. We were met by a silver hallway with white floor tiling. At the end of the hallway was a large metal door.
"That must be it.", I said. "Get ready. There might be something dangerous here, but keep in mind that the file may be here too. If not, we can find different files that may be useful."
They nodded in agreement. I took a crowbar from my bag and inserted it into the sealed entrance, slowly opening it. The lab was dimly lit and had a few dark patches, light reflecting from the white-tiled walls. We entered the lab and started looking into the different computers.
A lot of them had the word 'ERROR', written on them, while some had all their data wiped out.
"Over here.", Marina called, signaling us to come over.
"Did you find it?", Ethan asked.
"No, but I found something else.", she said. 'The file is titled Project: Witherfall.'
"We should copy it to you Eralink just in case.", I advised.
"You have a point.", she responded as she took off her Eralink and connected it to the computer, sharing the file. The loading time was very slow. We stood there in silence. Silent enough to hear a pin drop... but that wasn't what I heard. Instead, I could hear a faint sob, that sounded like it was coming from the darkest area of the lab.
"Can you hear that?", I asked, looking around the lab.
"Yeah... I can hear it.", replied Ethan.
"W-what is it?", Marina asked, her voice shaking.
"I don't know.", I took my flashlight and switched it on, pointing to where it was coming from. I stood horrified. Turning its back from us was a creature so grotesque, it was hard to believe it was a wither. Its skin was matte-black, making it stand out in the darkness. It had thorns comingout of its back, large claws on its hands and a large, bulky build. It was sitting with its knees to its chest, making a sob noise.
"Whatever you guys do... do not make any noises that may attract it.", I instructed softly.
They both silently agreed. The file transfer was now at 14%. The building started to crumble again. Dust fell from the ceiling, shaking the lights, making one of them snap from the roof and fall. As the crumbling stopped, the wither turned around and met out eyes. It got up and screamed, the shockwave bringing us down. I could feel my ears bleeding.
"Damn it. Open fire!", Ethan shouted, holding his assault rifle and shooting the wither. It ran to us screaming while we shot it, our bullets barely piercing through its thick skin, and yet it seemed unfazed. It launched black thorns at us, and we dodged over to the tables near the wall.
"We just have to hold it off until the transfer is complete!", Marina advised, shooting another arrow at it.
"Spread out and use all your fire power.", I instructed as I reloaded.
We spread out around the lab and shot at it from different directions to confuse it. It then conjured spikes from its body to block the bullets. Marina shot it in the eye with and explosive arrow and it made the same scream that caused the walls to crumble.
It ran to Marina while she was getting another arrow from her quiver. Ethan ran to it, catching up and stabbing it with a knife in its side before it hit him, throwing him across the floor. Marina was able to reload another explosive arrow and shot it's face again.
Ethan got up pulling out a grenade. "Damn this thing to hell!", he shouted as he grabbed the pin.
"Wait, don't pull it. You might bring this entire place down with us!", I said as I shot at the wither again.
Ethan grunted and put the grenade back. I looked at the screen of the computer. '95% complete'. I threw a flash bang at it, blinding and deafening it for a moment. When I got to the computer, the transfer was complete, and I removed Marina's Eralink. Tossing it back to her, we started running out while the wither was still regaining its senses. We ran out of the door and started pushing it hard to close it.
Pulling out the grenade from earlier, Ethan said. "This is pay back for that punch." He pulled the pin and threw the grenade at it. We fully closed the door, and the loud explosion pushed us back. We were breathing heavily as we hoped the monster behind the door was dead.
"What the hell was that?", Ethan asked, shocked.
"It must've been a mutation. I'm not sure how but maybe this file can explain it.", Marina answered as she got up to show us the file.
We heard the walls crumbling again. Dust still seeping through the ceiling.
"Wait... let's get out of here and look for Tyrell first. He might be in danger.", I advised.
"Yeah you're right.", Marina said as she put her hand down. "But where could he be?"
"We'll split up.", Ethan said, strapping his gun to his chest.
"No, that's too risky. We should look for him together. Besides. We still have a lot of time before have to return to the entrance.", I said.
"Sure, let's find him first.", Marina agreed.
