My Powers Were My Biggest Secret, Until My Mentor Shared Hers

Arrival

Arrival

Nov 15, 2024

The gates of Astraea Academy loomed in front of Luna, their black iron spirals laced with intricate, almost glowing symbols she couldn’t quite place. Her heart raced as she took her first step through them, gripping the strap of her bag tighter. The academy was enormous—its towering spires reaching up to the sky, surrounded by vast grounds filled with students who were talking, laughing, or hurrying along with books and weapons in hand. Everything here felt larger-than-life, even to someone like Luna, who had seen the otherworldly wonders of the Rift.

With her petite frame and long, silver hair that shimmered softly in the light, Luna appeared almost otherworldly. Her pale blue eyes, which usually held a deeper intensity, now looked gentle and contemplative as they absorbed the bustling scene. Today, they reflected a blend of nervousness and determination. This was it—her new life, a chance to hide in plain sight, to train in ways that would allow her to master her abilities without revealing the true extent of her powers. She glanced down at her hand, flexing her fingers slowly. Just yesterday, that same hand had created a burst of energy that nearly exposed her. But here, surrounded by gifted students with their own forms of magic, she could simply pass off her abilities as an intense martial arts style. After all, she was here to learn, to grow stronger—and to blend in.

She moved through the bustling crowd, carefully observing everything around her. Groups of students passed by, some laughing, others looking focused, eyes glinting with purpose. In every direction, there were signs of magic woven into the very structure of the academy: small orbs of light floated beside pathways, illuminating them in warm hues; faint magical barriers shimmered over certain entrances, likely protecting restricted areas.

Her gaze shifted to a towering, ivy-covered building in the distance, where students with serious expressions filed in, books and wands in hand. That was likely the main academic building. Luna’s heart thudded at the thought of all the secrets these walls held—secrets she might one day uncover if she was careful.

“Hey! You look a bit lost.” A warm voice pulled her from her thoughts.

Turning, Luna saw a girl with gentle features and light brown hair standing beside her, smiling softly. She wore a silver pendant around her neck that seemed to hum with a faint energy, catching the sunlight. Her eyes, a warm amber, held an understanding that instantly put Luna at ease.

“I’m Rei,” she said with a slight bow of her head, her voice as gentle as her appearance. “New here too?”

Luna returned the smile, nodding. “Yeah, I’m…still trying to find my way around.”

Rei chuckled, her voice almost like a calming melody in the chaos around them. “Same here. It’s pretty overwhelming, isn’t it?”

Before Luna could reply, a boy with dark, tousled hair appeared beside them, tossing an arm around Rei’s shoulder casually. “Found another lost soul, have you, Rei?” He grinned at Luna, his expression light and mischievous. “Name’s Kai. Don’t worry; she’s already saved me about three times from walking into walls.”

Luna found herself smiling despite her nerves. Kai’s energy was infectious, his grin wide and unapologetic. He looked like the type who could make anyone feel at ease, and she couldn’t help but relax a little more around him.

“It’s a good thing I met you, then,” she replied, allowing a hint of humor to color her tone. “I might’ve ended up circling the same building for hours.”

“Don’t worry, we’ve all been there,” Kai said with a laugh. “Just follow the crowd, and you’ll end up somewhere interesting. Though, it might not be where you intended to go.”

As they continued walking together, Luna’s attention was drawn to yet another girl who joined their little group—a slender figure with bright, spiky hair dyed a vibrant shade and a pair of round glasses perched on her nose. Her attire was distinctly modern, dotted with small gadgets and devices Luna couldn’t quite identify. She glanced at Luna with a curious tilt of her head, her eyes shining with intrigue.

“And you are?” she asked, her voice carrying an unmistakable inquisitiveness.

“Luna,” she answered, trying to keep her tone light.

“Nia,” the girl replied with a grin, reaching out a hand. Luna shook it, feeling a subtle hum of magic pass through her fingers. Nia’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if analyzing Luna down to her core, but the look passed just as quickly. “You’ve got a unique vibe. Let me guess, martial arts enthusiast?”

Luna blinked, slightly taken aback by how close Nia’s guess was. She smiled, nodding, though she kept her answer vague. “Something like that. I guess I’ve always been drawn to it.”

Kai gave her a playful nudge. “Hey, maybe you can teach me a few moves sometime. I’ve been wanting to pick up something new to add to my magical repertoire.”

“I’ll try not to break anything,” Luna joked, suppressing a smile. Despite her apprehension, she was beginning to feel a connection with these people—something she hadn’t experienced in a long time. It felt strange, but comforting.

As they wandered through the academy grounds, Kai and Nia filled the air with conversation, exchanging stories about their previous training and experiences. Rei walked quietly beside Luna, occasionally glancing over at her with a soft smile. It was as though Rei could sense her unease but respected her space, offering reassurance without words. Luna appreciated that.

They eventually reached a massive training arena, its edges lined with magical wards that pulsed faintly. Luna’s gaze lingered on the wards, recognizing the complex weaves of magic used to protect students from harm during sparring sessions. Inside, groups of students sparred, some using magic, others wielding weapons. The clash of steel and the flicker of fire and ice filled the space with an intense energy.

Nia pointed to the arena with a grin. “That’s where we’ll spend a lot of our time. Apparently, Astraea Academy’s sparring sessions are legendary.”

Kai cracked his knuckles. “I can’t wait to get started. The last academy I went to wasn’t half as intense.”

Luna tried to focus on their words, but her gaze kept drifting to the sparring matches, her mind running through possible techniques. If she was careful, she could use her Rift-enhanced agility and strength here without drawing too much attention. After all, nobody needed to know that her reflexes came from somewhere beyond the physical realm.

Suddenly, a tall figure entered the arena, capturing everyone’s attention. She had an authoritative air about her, her sharp gaze surveying the students with an intensity that made even the rowdiest among them fall silent. Luna felt her breath catch—this was Elara, the academy’s lead combat instructor. Her dark attire was simple but commanding, accentuated by a hint of armor around her shoulders and wrists. Her hair, a striking shade of midnight, fell past her shoulders in a smooth, elegant cascade.

Elara’s gaze swept across the crowd, briefly meeting Luna’s eyes. Luna felt a flicker of recognition, an unexplainable pull, as though this wasn’t the first time their paths had crossed. But the feeling vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving her heart pounding.

“Welcome to Astraea Academy,” Elara’s voice rang out, steady and clear. “Each of you has been chosen because of your unique abilities and potential. This academy will push you beyond your limits, but remember—it’s up to you to rise to the challenge.”

Luna’s heart thudded in her chest, her excitement mingling with a sense of anticipation she hadn’t felt in a long time. This was her chance to find herself, to grow stronger without having to look over her shoulder constantly. She could feel it—a fresh start, masked in the guise of rigorous training.

The instructor continued, her voice both stern and encouraging. “The trials you’ll face here will be unlike any you’ve encountered before. Trust your instincts, and support each other. You’ll find that here, your friendships are as essential as your skills.”

Luna glanced at Rei, Kai, and Nia, feeling a warmth she couldn’t quite explain. She had spent so long avoiding close connections, keeping herself distanced to protect her secret. Yet, somehow, these people felt…different. Like maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t have to hide every part of herself.

As the announcement concluded, students dispersed, heading to their respective dormitories. Luna and her newfound friends walked in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

Finally, they arrived at the residential building, a tall, intricately designed structure with winding staircases and quiet corridors. Luna found her room, tucked away in a corner on the third floor. She pushed open the door and stepped inside, taking in the simple but cozy space. The bed was neatly made, a small desk sat by the window, and a wardrobe stood in one corner.

She set her bag down and allowed herself a long exhale. This was the beginning of a new chapter, one she had been anticipating and dreading in equal measure.

As Luna lay down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, she felt the weight of her hidden powers press against her chest. She’d come here to blend in, to control the abilities she barely understood. But beneath her calm exterior, the shadowy force of the Rift pulsed, reminding her of the truth she couldn’t escape.

Tomorrow, training will begin. And with it, her journey to prove that she was more than her heritage, more than the powers she concealed. Here, surrounded by others with abilities of their own, perhaps she could find a way to balance her desire for strength with the quiet hope of belonging.

For now, though, she closed her eyes and let the quiet settle around her, wondering what the dawn would bring.
