My Powers Were My Biggest Secret, Until My Mentor Shared Hers

The Training Session

The Training Session

Nov 18, 2024

The sun was barely peeking through the clouds as Luna, Rei, Kai, and Nia made their way to the secluded training grounds on the edge of the academy’s campus. The area was perfect for privacy—a spacious clearing nestled within a grove of ancient trees, their leaves whispering softly in the wind, providing a natural barrier from the rest of the academy’s bustling activity. Here, Luna could almost imagine they were far away from the pressures of school and its rules, free to be themselves.

“This place is perfect,” Nia murmured, her voice soft with awe as she took in the setting. “Feels like we’re in our own little world.”

“Which means,” Kai added, grinning, “no instructors breathing down our necks. We can train how we want, at our own pace.” He punched the air in mock excitement. “I’m ready to be a martial arts master by the end of this!”

Rei smirked. “Well, maybe you could work on not tripping over your own feet first.”

Kai rolled his eyes, and Luna chuckled, appreciating the friendly banter. She had agreed to join this early-morning training session to strengthen her friendships with the group, but she couldn’t shake the slight anxiety tugging at her mind. She knew her powers, the unique abilities tied to the mysterious Rift, were something she had to keep hidden, yet it was hard to ignore the thrill of pushing herself to her limits—especially now, when she had friends to share the experience with.

“So, shall we figure out a schedule?” Nia suggested, pulling her long braid over her shoulder as she looked around at them. “We could each take turns leading a session, focusing on different skills.”

“That’s a great idea!” Luna agreed, nodding enthusiastically. “That way, everyone can bring in what they’re good at, and we all learn from each other.”

Kai rubbed his hands together. “Alright, then. Who’s gonna kick things off?”

“Why don’t you go first, Kai?” Rei nudged him with a smirk. “Show us this ‘mastery’ you keep bragging about.”

Kai shot her a mock glare, rolling his shoulders. “Fine, but don’t come crying to me when my sheer brilliance blinds you.”

With a smirk, he stretched out one hand, a small flame sparking to life in his palm. He twirled his fingers, and the flame morphed into a fiery ribbon, weaving around his hand like a pet snake. “Pretty cool, right?” he grinned, sending a wink their way before tossing the flame into the air.

It hovered for a moment before he clenched his fist, extinguishing it. Without missing a beat, he slammed his foot down, calling up a jagged line of earth that shot across the ground. He stepped into a low, exaggerated stance, sweeping his arm to the side as he channeled his energy to manipulate the rock. Bits of earth rose and fell around him as he executed a series of moves, blending his fire and earth magic with sharp punches and kicks.

The others watched, some laughing, some genuinely impressed, as he kept up his show, throwing in a fiery punch and even a roundhouse kick that sent a small dust cloud swirling. “This is top-level magic, people,” he said, looking over his shoulder with a smirk. “Feel free to take notes.”

Luna shook her head, fighting back a smile. Typical Kai—cocky, but undeniably skilled. And as she watched him move, she couldn’t deny he made it look effortless.

As they settled into their training, the group’s dynamic took shape naturally. Nia suggested partner drills, pointing out techniques and offering gentle corrections, her patience and attentiveness making her an easy leader. Rei brought a calm precision to her movements, her serious nature contrasting with Kai’s more carefree style.

Eventually, all eyes turned to Luna. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She didn’t want to stand out too much, but she couldn’t exactly hold back completely either. After all, her martial arts training had been one of the few things she could practice without revealing her Rift abilities, and she was proud of how much she’d honed her skills.

“Alright, Luna,” Nia said, stepping back to give her room. “Show us what you’ve got!”

Luna smiled, moving into position. She closed her eyes briefly, allowing herself to slip into the focused mindset she’d always used during training. When she opened them again, she began a simple sequence of moves—a series of fluid punches and kicks, each one precise, each movement seamlessly flowing into the next. She moved gracefully, her body remembering every step, every strike.

As she transitioned into a sweeping kick, she heard a small gasp from Nia and felt the others’ eyes on her, but she kept her focus, finishing the sequence with a controlled stance. When she finally straightened up, her cheeks were flushed, but she was pleased to see their expressions of admiration.

“Whoa,” Kai said, blinking in surprise. “I knew you were good, but that was… something else.”

Rei nodded approvingly. “You move with such ease, like it’s second nature.”

Luna smiled, slightly embarrassed by the attention. “I guess I’ve just… practiced a lot,” she said, carefully choosing her words. She glanced away, trying to hide her discomfort. The truth was, this wasn’t even close to her full ability—she’d held back, trying not to draw too much attention. But even with her restraint, her instincts had nearly taken over, the thrill of the movements almost too tempting to resist.

“Come on, let me try!” Kai said, stepping forward with a grin. He mimicked her moves, his expressions comical as he attempted to match her grace, though his steps were a bit clumsy. The others laughed, and Luna joined in, the tension easing as they all started playfully imitating one another’s moves.

They spent the next hour in a mix of drills and sparring, each of them sharing their skills and styles. Luna was cautious, but there was something exhilarating about being able to showcase even a fraction of her abilities, to feel the rush of movement and power while surrounded by friends. She found herself smiling more and more, letting go of her worries as the rhythm of training took over.

When they paired up for sparring, Kai squared up against Luna, his grin full of mischief and energy. Flames flickered briefly around his hands as he settled into a stance, clearly ready to make a spectacle of this match.

“Alright, Luna, brace yourself. I won’t go easy on you just because you’re talented,” he teased, adding a playful wink.

Luna smirked back. “I’d be insulted if you did.”

With a sweeping jab, Kai moved in, his fist charged with a flash of controlled flame that fizzled out just before reaching her. Luna sidestepped effortlessly, ducking and weaving through his attacks as he tried to close the distance with quick punches, each one infused with a subtle burst of heat that warmed the air between them. She held back on her own counters, focusing on evasion and technique, knowing Kai was doing his best to throw her off balance with his flashy moves.

“Come on, Luna, give me something!” he laughed, pulling a chunk of earth up under his foot and spinning it like a skateboard, sliding toward her with a daring grin. “You’re making me look bad here.”

She chuckled, sidestepping as he shot forward. “Oh, I’m sure you don’t need my help for that,” she taunted lightly, keeping her guard up.

In a sudden burst of focus, she found herself slipping into her rhythm, her movements crisp and precise as she dodged another jab. Feeling the pulse of her energy flare within, she controlled it carefully, keeping her strength in check as she threw a gentle but well-timed counter-punch.

Kai staggered back with a breathless laugh, raising his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright, maybe I underestimated you a bit,” he admitted, wiping a small spark off his shoulder. “You’ve got some real power in those fists, Luna.”

Rei, who had been watching from the sidelines, chuckled, arms crossed. “Guess Kai’s the one who needs to catch up now.”

Nia stepped forward, giving Luna an encouraging smile. “Seriously, Luna, you make it look so effortless.”

Luna’s heart swelled with gratitude, but there was also that familiar pang of anxiety. She could feel her control slipping at times, her body almost betraying her, pushing her to reveal more than she intended. As much as she wanted to be honest with them, to show her true self, she knew she couldn’t—at least, not yet.

“Thanks, everyone,” she said, trying to keep her tone light. “I guess all that practice is paying off.”

They settled down in a loose circle beneath the trees, catching their breath as the sunlight filtered through the leaves, scattering warm patterns on the ground. For a moment, they all just sat there, listening to the soft rustle of the branches, enjoying a comfortable silence.

Kai leaned back, pulling his phone from his pocket and squinting at the screen. “Looks like we’ve got about fifteen minutes before we need to head back,” he said, breaking the quiet with a grin. “Who’s up for one last round?”

Nia gave an exaggerated groan, leaning back against the tree trunk. “Speak for yourself, Kai. I’m all trained out. I don’t know if my arms will work tomorrow.”

Rei smirked. “It’s okay. Kai thinks he’s training to be a legend or something. He can take the extra round alone.”
Kai shot them both a mock glare. “You’re all just afraid I’d win this one.”

Luna chuckled, enjoying the easy banter. They’d only known each other a short time, but she already felt at ease with them in a way she hadn’t expected.

Rei glanced at her, a small, thoughtful smile on her face. “You know, it’s nice to have a group like this. People who actually make you want to get better… and don’t give you grief if you trip up.”

Nia nodded, giving Luna’s shoulder a gentle pat. “And you, Luna—I think we’re all picking up things from you. The way you focus and move... it’s inspiring. Really.”

Luna blushed, ducking her head slightly, but she couldn’t help the warm smile that crept onto her face. “Thanks, guys. It’s... nice to feel part of a team.”

Luna looked down, her cheeks warm from their praise. She wanted to tell them the truth—that there was a reason for her focus, a reason for her control. But the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she just smiled, grateful for their support, even if they didn’t know the whole story.

They continued their training until the sun was high in the sky, each of them taking turns leading drills and trying out new techniques. By the time they wrapped up, they were all tired but satisfied, a sense of accomplishment settling over them.

As they walked back toward the academy, Luna felt a mix of emotions—exhilaration from the training, joy from the time spent with her friends, and a lingering worry that she wouldn’t be able to keep up her façade forever. She knew she couldn’t afford to be careless, that even a small slip could reveal her secret. And yet, being with Rei, Kai, and Nia, she felt a sense of freedom she hadn’t experienced in a long time.

Just before they reached the academy gates, Nia paused, turning to look at them. “How about we make this a regular thing?” she suggested, her eyes bright. “We could meet here every week, work on our skills together.”

Luna’s heart swelled with happiness. “I’d love that.”

They all agreed, and as they parted ways, Luna couldn’t help but feel hopeful. She didn’t know what the future held, but for now, she was content to take things one day at a time, to keep training, keep learning, and keep her friends close—no matter the secrets she had to keep along the way.
