My Powers Were My Biggest Secret, Until My Mentor Shared Hers

Empress

Empress

Nov 22, 2024

The library was shrouded in heavy silence as Luna and Rei stepped inside. Their footsteps echoed softly on the polished stone floors, the vast, dimly lit space around them seeming to breathe with age and mystery. Towering shelves lined every aisle, filled with ancient volumes that looked like they hadn’t been touched in centuries. A faint scent of dust and aged paper filled the air.

Luna glanced around, her eyes tracing the endless rows of books stacked up like a maze. She could feel a strange pull guiding her deeper into the dimly lit aisles, almost as if something in the shadows was calling to her. She couldn’t quite explain it, but it was there—a soft, magnetic tug that made her heart beat a little faster.

“This place feels… ancient,” Rei murmured beside her, her voice hushed in reverence. She reached out, her fingers grazing the spines of a few nearby books. “It’s like the air’s charged with… something. I don’t know what, but it’s almost overwhelming, isn’t it?”

Luna nodded slowly, absorbing the atmosphere. “Yeah, like there are stories hidden here no one’s touched in ages.” Her voice was equally quiet, but her gaze was already drifting deeper into the library, a spark of curiosity igniting in her chest. It was as though something unseen was nudging her forward.

Rei wandered over to a nearby shelf, her fingers tracing over an old tome on herbal lore. She opened it, and a small smile crept onto her face as she flipped through the yellowed pages, engrossed in a list of ancient plants and remedies. But Luna’s attention had already strayed further, her feet carrying her down one of the narrow aisles.

Around her, the dim lighting seemed to cast shifting shadows that moved with each step she took. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a slight chill despite the warmth of the library. Somewhere in the corner of her mind, she registered Rei’s quiet murmurs as she read, but her own focus was pulled elsewhere. Her heart skipped a beat as her eyes settled on a single, black leather-bound book standing alone on a shelf, isolated from the others as if it were waiting for her.

The title, faded but still legible, read: Echoes of the Empress.

A shiver ran through her. She took a deep breath, her hand reaching out to touch the spine. The leather felt cold and strangely alive beneath her fingertips, like it held a pulse all its own. The longer she held it, the more she felt an energy simmering beneath her skin—a strange mix of excitement and unease.

“Echoes of the Empress…” she whispered, barely aware she’d spoken aloud.

Rei’s gaze snapped up, her brows knitting together as she noticed Luna’s stillness. “What did you find?”

Luna glanced back, hesitating. She wanted to share it with Rei, but there was something deeply personal, almost sacred, about this moment. “I’m… not sure,” she murmured, though her hand had already begun to close around the book. Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted it from the shelf, and a subtle chill seemed to seep into her skin.

She slowly opened it, and her breath hitched. The first page held an illustration, a haunting depiction of a dark, looming figure shrouded in shadow. Luna’s eyes skimmed the opening lines, the ink faded but legible enough to reveal fragments of a story. “The Void Empress,” she read, her voice barely a whisper.

Rei’s eyes widened slightly as she stepped closer, catching sight of the words over Luna’s shoulder. Her expression softened, a quiet concern flickering across her face. “Luna… are you alright?”

But Luna barely heard her. Her focus was locked on the words, the fragmented descriptions of the Empress pulling her deeper into the page. Phrases like “devourer” and “monster” leapt out, each one striking her like a physical blow. Her heartbeat quickened, memories rising unbidden to the surface of her mind, memories she’d long buried.

She could still see her mother’s warm, reassuring smile, hear the gentle hum of her father’s voice as he read her stories about the Rift. The memories blurred with the present, filling her with a hollow ache and a simmering anger. This creature, this Empress—she was the reason Luna’s family had been torn from her.

Rei placed a gentle hand on Luna’s shoulder, grounding her. “You don’t have to go through it if it’s too much,” she said softly, her voice filled with understanding.

But Luna shook her head, her eyes glinting with determination. “I… I need to know,” she replied, barely able to keep the tremor from her voice. She hadn’t shared everything with Rei, hadn’t spoken of the quiet grief that weighed on her heart every day. But even in her silence, her friend’s presence was a comfort.

She flipped through the pages, taking in the fragmented accounts of the Empress. Each description painted her as an unimaginable terror—a creature of shifting shadows that consumed light itself, a monstrous force that defied any notion of empathy or life. Some accounts claimed she could take on human form, weaving illusions that compelled her victims to reveal their deepest secrets, while others described her as a shifting mist capable of unraveling memories with a mere touch. Her unique magic allowed her to drain the very life-force of her prey, leaving them hollowed out and empty. Luna’s hands clenched tighter around the book. It was difficult to comprehend, yet it was this very creature that had shattered her life.

A quiet rage stirred in her heart, mingling with her sorrow. She closed the book, the weight of it pressing against her palms like a physical reminder of her loss. She had barely spoken to anyone about her family, let alone shared the full truth of what had happened. But here, with this book, she felt an undeniable pull—a need to understand, to uncover the truth of what had taken her parents from her.

“Do you want to borrow it?” Rei asked, her hand still resting gently on Luna’s shoulder, her steady presence a quiet source of strength.

Luna nodded, her voice thick with emotion. “Yes, I… I think I need to read this. To understand.”

They approached the librarian’s desk, and as the book was checked out, Luna’s mind raced with a new determination. She wouldn’t let the Empress or anyone else destroy what her parents had sacrificed everything for.

That evening, Luna sat on her bed, the book resting on her lap. Her fingers traced the worn leather cover as memories drifted to the surface.

She remembered being seven years old, wrapped in a blanket as her mother, Liora, held her close. The familiar scent of jasmine lingered in the air as her mother’s fingers combed gently through her hair. Her father, Cedric, held up a tiny, shimmering orb, its blue light casting a soft glow in the room. “This is Rift Essence,” he’d said, his voice warm and comforting.

Luna had looked up at him, wide-eyed. “What does it do?”

Cedric chuckled, lowering himself to her eye level. “Well, this little thing partly accelerates the opening of the rifts—kind of like a key that unlocks special doors between worlds. But don’t worry, darling. It’s safe here with us.”

Her mother’s voice joined his, soft yet strong. “Your father studies these things to understand them, and I keep us safe from what might come through the Rift.” There had been a fierce pride in her tone, a strength that made Luna feel secure, even in the face of the unknown.

She had snuggled deeper into her mother’s embrace, feeling her father’s hand resting on her shoulder, a grounding, gentle weight. They had been her world—her safe haven.

But that world had shattered.

As the memory faded, Luna’s fingers tightened around the edge of her blanket. She wouldn’t forget her parents. She couldn’t. Whatever it took, she would honor their memory and discover the truth they had fought so hard to protect.

A single tear traced down her cheek, but she wiped it away. There would be time for tears later. For now, she had a path to follow, one that might lead her closer to the darkness that had taken everything from her.

The next morning, as Luna prepared to face another day at the academy, she took one last look at the book resting on her bedside table. It wasn’t the book itself that mattered, but the resolve it symbolized—a reminder of the life she had lost, and the vengeance she now sought. She knew this journey would demand everything from her, might push her to the edges of her strength.

But with friends by her side, she felt a fragile hope. Maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t have to face it alone.
