Bobby Braw The Digital Swindle

Conflict Over Bytari

Conflict Over Bytari

Nov 15, 2024

In another part of the city, Elsa and Julia appeared out of thin air. The temporary glow that came before them served as a warning that this was going to happen. When Elsa looked down, she saw the roofs of many skyscrapers, along with tiny cars driven by microscopic people. This could only mean one thing.

“JULIA, WHY DID YOU BRING ME TO THE TOP OF NIMBUS TOWER?” demanded Elsa in shock. “I thought it would be best if we settled our differences away from the others,” explained Julia. “Besides, you always wanted to go up Nimbus Tower,” she added. “NOT LIKE THIS!” shouted Elsa. “Why do you have to be like this? I liked you when you were just my fun aunt,” Elsa yelled. “I already told you why,” answered Julia. “If you want a crime partner so badly, why does it have to be me specifically?” asked Elsa. “Because you’re a good fighter, you’re smart and you have excellent taste in fashion,” answered Julia. “Not to mention, you’re my niece,” she added.

Elsa had heard enough. She lunged at Julia with her machete. Elsa and Julia made the most of what little room they had, the machete and the Cyber Blade repeatedly clashing against each other. Changing tactics, Julia kicked Elsa causing her to lose her balance. To make matters worse, she was standing on the edge of the building. Before she could fall to her death, Elsa grabbed on to the ledge with one hand and held her machete in the other. While she was dangling from Nimbus Tower by her fingertips, Julia approached her. “You know, I tried to show you the benefits of being a hacker, and I offered you a position as my crime partner. But if this is how you want to be, then so be it,” said Julia, while pointing the Cyber Blade at Elsa. At that moment, Elsa’s hand began to sweat. She pulled her other arm onto the tower while trying to keep hold of her machete. Then, she pushed herself up and stood on the tower once more. From there, Elsa continued to fight Julia as if nothing had happened.

Meanwhile, the other Braw Agents were trying to clear up the beetle-droid-infested lab. Bobby, Hannah, Edward, and Rita still had no luck destroying the cybernetic pests. Narvy would have explored Julia’s tabs by now, but he was too busy trying to swipe the beetle droids off the equipment. After growing impatient trying to clear the equipment of beetles, he went looking for the remote. Every cabinet or drawer he opened, Narvy was always greeted by the absence of a remote. All hope seemed lost until he thought of a new idea upon noticing some cardboard. Narvy grabbed it and went looking for some tape and a pair of scissors. Fortunately, he found both in separate drawers. Returning to the computer equipment, Narvy taped a strip of cardboard to each side of every monitor, while leaving the screens uncovered. “What are you doing?” asked Edward. “I couldn’t find the remote, so this is the next best thing,” answered Narvy. Once he was done barricading the monitors with cardboard, all of the screens had protection from the beetle droids.

From there, Narvy opened Julia’s tabs and investigated them. Surprisingly enough, the one showing her bank account hadn’t been closed. The website stated that she had $625,000 in her savings account. After discovering that, he scrolled through Julia’s bank history and noticed a recurring trend. While some pay cheques from the Print Agency showed up, most of the money from the last three months had been obtained illegally from various sources. Narvy even managed to find the transaction from the Ball of Honour. Apparently, $5,000 had been stolen on that night. Narvy left Julia’s bank account tab and moved to another tab. This one appeared to be some kind of database. There was a list of names that featured everyone’s phone number. He assumed this had something to do with one of Julia’s schemes. Narvy knew he had to return the money. The only problem was that he didn’t know how to. He continued to look at Julia’s tabs even though the beetle droids made it hard to concentrate. The cardboard barricade turned out not to be as useful as previously thought since the man-made pests simply crawled over it.

The other Braw Agents were still trying to destroy the beetle droids, even though they knew they were indestructible. As Narvy turned his head and looked around, another idea formed in his mind. “Guys, I want you to get out of the lab,” he ordered. “Why?” asked Rita. “Because I need to figure something out on this computer,” explained Narvy. “One of you should go back to the surface and report Julia to the police. The other three should stay down here and stop the beetle droids from leaving the manhole,” he added. Just then, he took out his torch and gave it to Bobby. “Take this, you’ll need it.” Everyone agreed with the plan and put it into action. Bobby, Hannah, Edward, and Rita all left the lab with most of the beetle droids following them. Unfortunately, a couple of them were still in the lab, but Narvy decided to just work with it. Without any further distractions, he went back into Julia’s bank account and looked for a possible way to return the money to everyone. He had never done internet banking before, but he was determined to give it a try, regardless.

Out in the tunnel Bobby, Hannah, Edward, and Rita continued to defend themselves from the beetle droids. They were only a short distance away from the lab’s entrance door. In the middle of the situation, Bobby spoke up. “I’m going to Bytari’s police station,” he announced. “Just stay here and keep doing what you’re doing,” he added. “Sure thing,” replied Hannah, as she attacked a pile of droids. “Do you want this?” asked Bobby, as he handed Narvy’s torch to her. “No, you’re going to need it more than us,” answered Hannah. Bobby left the others and headed for the manhole exit. Hannah, Edward, and Rita had to continue their business in the semi-dark. Fortunately, a little bit of light leaked through the gap in the door, making their job slightly easier.

For the next ten minutes, Bobby ran through the entire length of the tunnel. The only things that slowed him down were the wall obstacle and his limited vision. He stepped in a few puddles but didn’t care about the potential hazard the dirty water might contain. Once he got to the other side, the torch showed him the metal ladder. It was thin and the steps were like bars, but the contraption appeared to be tall and sturdy. Without hesitation, Bobby grabbed on to one of the lowest bars and climbed up the ladder. As he got higher, he felt the ceiling coming towards him with each step. Once he reached the top of the ladder, he pushed the ceiling upwards revealing a perfectly round man-sized hole. Upon returning to the surface, Bobby placed the lid over the manhole without locking it. From there, he left the alleyway and walked around Bytari in search of the police station.

Although Bobby couldn’t see it from his position, there was a bit of drama happening on top of Nimbus Tower. Even after twenty minutes, Elsa and Julia were still fighting above the rest of the city. “Why did you go down this path?” asked Julia. “Because I have moral standards, and I don’t want to go to jail,” answered Elsa. “That’s your concern? Oh please. I’ve been a hacker for three months, and if it was really that risky I would have been arrested in my first week,” explained Julia. “I don’t think I’ll be behind bars any time soon,” she added, not knowing what Bobby was going to do.

The two of them continued fighting then Elsa noticed something fall out of Julia’s pocket. She immediately grabbed it, assuming it was the remote for the beetle droids. “YOU GIVE THAT BACK,” shouted Julia, as she reached for the remote. Elsa reacted quickly by moving her arm far back. She spent a few moments analysing the remote and keeping it from her aunt’s reach. It was black and displayed a large red button, along with eight smaller buttons below it. She was unable to see the finer details since she was holding the remote away from her and was constantly moving her arm to keep it out of Julia’s reach. Despite their dangerous position of being on the tallest skyscraper in Bytari, Julia still lunged her arm over her niece’s shoulder, trying to grab her hand to get the remote. Elsa didn’t know what any of the buttons were for, but she pressed the big one thinking it would do something to the beetle droids. After she had pressed it a look of anger and fear grew on Julia’s face. She was the only one who knew what pressing the button did, but neither of them saw what happened.

However, Narvy, Hannah, Edward and Rita all saw the aftermath of Elsa’s action. While the four of them were dealing with the robotic pests, every droid seemed to randomly stop working all of a sudden. They all dropped to the ground and became motionless. Nobody saw this coming, but everyone took it as a pleasant surprise. Just then, Narvy entered the tunnel space. “Aren’t you trying to return the money?” asked Rita. “Yeah, but I couldn’t figure out how to do that,” explained Narvy. “I’ll just leave it to the experts,” he added. “What should we do now?” asked Edward. “Let’s get out of this tunnel,” replied Narvy. He quickly raced back to the lab, hoping it would contain a torch. Fortunately, he found one in a drawer. Without wasting any more time, Narvy, Hannah, Edward, and Rita made their escape from the dark, dingy tunnel.

Meanwhile, Bobby found the police station after a five-minute walk from the alleyway. It was even bigger and flashier than the one in Fluvaria. He walked through the sliding doors and immediately grabbed the receptionist’s attention. “Hello, how may I help you?” he asked. “I know who the hacker from the Ball of Honour is,” stated Bobby. “Who is it?” asked the receptionist. “Julia Henswell, the ginger-haired woman who works at the Print Agency,” explained Bobby. “What do you want us to do about it?” asked the receptionist. “I want you to send some cops to arrest her,” answered Bobby. “Where is she?” asked the receptionist. “I don’t know. My friends and I were fighting her in a secret lab down in a tunnel then she just left. Hopefully, she’s around here somewhere,” explained Bobby. “If I were you, I’d send the cops on a search party across Bytari. She couldn’t have gone too far,” he added. The receptionist immediately grabbed the nearby phone and called for assistance.

On top of Nimbus Tower, Elsa and Julia still hadn’t finished their long fight. When she least expected it, Elsa felt a vibration from her phone. Since she was in the middle of a fight she couldn’t look at it and see the message she had received. A moment later, Julia attempted to push Elsa off the roof again. While she was still at risk of falling, her body had a lot more contact with the building this time. Elsa took this as an opportunity to look at her phone. She took it out of her pocket and saw the message every Braw Agent had received. Hi. Just want to let you know that I’ve reported Julia to the police, stated Bobby in his message. That’s great. I’m with Hannah, Edward, and Rita in the alleyway. Let’s all meet up there, replied Narvy in written form. Without hesitation, Elsa put her phone away and kicked Julia who fell to the floor, causing the telecoin to fall out of her pocket. Elsa took it and used it to escape the tower. Within a couple of seconds, her body turned into a monochromatic glowing mass. Julia grabbed on to her niece, the glow spreading to include her. A few seconds later, the two of them vanished from Nimbus Tower.
