The Complex Power of Money: Influence, Ethics, and Society

Be Careful with Your Money: Protecting Yourself from Scams

Be Careful with Your Money: Protecting Yourself from Scams

Dec 02, 2024

In today's world, people aren't always that careful with money. One has to be observant as to where they fill out information with a credit or debit card, whether online or to whom they are providing personal details. If it were online, then order something only on well-established, trusted websites. In case of transferring, only do it in a personal meeting or over phones. This would avoid any sort of fraud case.

One of the fastest-growing concerns in financial scams involves cryptocurrency, particularly Bitcoin.Beginning in 2009, early Bitcoin investors were able to make modest investments grow into riches, and by 2024, they had become self-made millionaires. Scammers, however, have exploited this success story to develop bogus schemes that entice gullible people. Usually, an offshore website, WhatsApp number, or Instagram account that appears authentic is used to carry out these scams.

Here is how the typical scam works: He gives you a Bitcoin wallet address and asks you to send the minimum amount, usually around $1,000 USD, approximately 300 KWD. He promises to double your money and might even show you a fake balance reflecting the promised returns. But to get to these "profits," they ask for extra fees, usually masked as "processing charges."

The moment you pay for those fees, they block you, and you just got scammed. Since cryptocurrency transactions cannot be traced, these scams are hard to track and are often related to other illegal activities on the dark web. Celebrities have also been perpetrators or unwitting participants in cryptocurrency scams. For example, Logan Paul got in trouble for allegedly scamming his own fans with a venture called CryptoZoo. Many fans trusted him simply because of his celebrity and persona as "the cool guy." Needless to say, the experiment went south, and that left the fans out of pocket and betrayed.

Therefore, the lesson is simple: be careful with your money, both online and offline. Do your homework before any kind of financial transaction, most especially if it relates to cryptocurrency. Trust no one except for reputable platforms and individuals. An offer is probably fraudulent if it seems too good to be true. Stay aware and wary of exaggerated claims to protect yourself and your money against scammers.
