If you're unfamiliar with a "genizah," Rivke basically spells out exactly what it is here. Some are in synagogues, some are in cemeteries. And, yes, there are burial procedures for books with God's name in it. The most famous genizah is in Cairo, from the 800s. Here, I'm using it as a location to riff on adventure tropes.
Additionally, boys did make themselves ill to avoid military conscription, although I'm fudging history a bit. Under Alexander III, conscription was mandatory for all males age 21 and would last six years. Isaak's not 21, but in earlier generations Jewish boys were conscripted at age 12 (around Isaak's age) for 25 years of service, away from home. It was, in modern parlance, super messed up.
(Also, I just wanted him running around in his underpants).
Think STRANGER THINGS meets FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (but without the songs)... PALE OF SETTLEMENT is a YA fantasy set in 1881, after the assassination of Czar Alexander II (which really happened!). And after evil Cossacks kidnap a rabbi with a dark secret, it'll be up to his daughter to find the legendary Golem and save her dad... and the entire Russian empire. Along the way, she'll encounter monsters, magic... and romance!
