Episode 2: Breaking Point
Scene 1: Aftermath of the Talent Show Auditions
The next day, the school buzzes with chatter about the talent show auditions. The hallway is filled with whispers, some students congratulating each other, others talking about who they think will win.
Zi walks through the hall, head held high after her fashion showcase. She overhears a group of girls whispering. One says, “I heard that girl Zi thinks she’s already a designer. What a joke.” Zi tries to ignore them but can’t help the hurt that stings inside her. She wonders if her dreams really are just fantasies after all.
Zi (thinking to herself): Why do I always feel like I’m trying to prove myself to everyone? Maybe they’re right... Maybe I’m not good enough.
At the same time, Zy is walking by with her basketball in hand, her mind heavy with the pressure to win. Her dad, a former athlete, is expecting a victory, but Zy has started to feel the weight of his expectations bearing down on her.
Zy (thinking to herself): What if I don’t win? What if I fail?
She doesn’t notice Sam standing by the lockers, lost in thought as well. Sam is deep in her own worries, wondering if her reading was enough to leave an impression. She’s always been the quiet one, and the idea of being noticed both excites and terrifies her.
Sam (thinking to herself): Did they really like my reading? Or was it too much? What if I never get to finish my book?
As the bell rings, the girls head to their next classes, each lost in their own thoughts.
Scene 2: The Strain of Expectations
Later that day, the girls find themselves in the same cafeteria, though they don’t really know what to say to each other yet. Zi grabs her lunch and sits at an empty table, scrolling through her phone to see the comments on her fashion designs. The positive ones make her smile, but the negative ones make her feel small.
Zy grabs her tray and sits down at the table next to Zi, uncharacteristically quiet. Zi notices the tension.
Zi: "Hey, what's going on? You look... stressed."
Zy: "Just thinking about the basketball thing... I can’t afford to lose, you know? My dad’s counting on me. He wants me to win."
Zi: "I get it. I’ve got my own pressure... with the fashion show. But we’re not robots, right? We’re doing the best we can."
Zy nods but still looks troubled.
Zy: "It’s just... It feels like if I don’t win, I’ll let everyone down. Especially my family."
Zi: "I get that. It’s tough when everyone expects something from you."
Sam walks into the cafeteria, scanning the room. She spots the two girls and hesitantly approaches.
Sam: "Hey, can I sit here?"
Zi and Zy both nod, and Sam joins them.
Sam: "I... I wanted to thank you both. For saying my reading was good. I wasn’t sure, but it meant a lot."
Zy: "Of course, you were great. Seriously, I didn’t expect that."
Zi: "Yeah, it was awesome. You really know how to captivate a room."
For a moment, the three girls just sit there, sharing a quiet sense of understanding. But the silence soon turns awkward as the school counselor, Mr. Finch, approaches the table.
Mr. Finch: "Hey, ladies. I saw your performances. All of you did amazing work. But I also saw how hard you’re pushing yourselves. Just remember, it's okay to ask for help if the pressure gets too heavy."
He gives them a warm smile before walking away. His words stick with all of them, but it’s hard for any of them to admit they need help.
Scene 3: The Breaking Point
Later that afternoon, the girls are on their own paths—until something happens that forces them to confront their own limits.
Zi is at home, still staring at the designs she’s created for the fashion show. But she starts to feel the weight of it all—the long hours, the sacrifices, the doubts. Her mom walks in and, noticing the frustration on her face, gently asks her what’s wrong.
Zi’s Mom: "Honey, you’ve been working so hard. Don’t forget to take care of yourself."
Zi: "But I can’t stop. If I stop now, everything will fall apart. No one will take me seriously."
Zi’s Mom: "Sweetie, they’ll take you seriously because of your talent, not because of how hard you push yourself. Don’t burn out."
Zi doesn’t respond, but her mother’s words echo in her mind.
Zy is out on the basketball court, practicing her shots. She’s pushing herself, but every missed shot makes her feel like she’s failing. Her coach calls her over, clearly frustrated.
Coach: "Zy, what’s going on with you? You’ve got all the skills, but you’re holding back. What’s really going on?"
Zy: "I can’t mess up, Coach. I have to win. My family is counting on me."
Coach: "Your family isn’t on that court with you. It’s just you and the ball. Remember, you control your success, not anyone else’s expectations."
Zy stares at her coach for a moment, unsure of how to process the advice. The pressure she feels starts to feel unbearable.
Sam, still unsure of her place in the world, is sitting alone in the library, writing her novel. But the words aren’t coming as easily as they did before. She keeps thinking about how people see her—just the quiet, bookish girl. The doubts start to creep in.
Sam (thinking to herself): What if I’m not good enough? What if no one ever reads my stories?
She closes the notebook and sighs, feeling the weight of her unspoken dreams.
Scene 4: A New Understanding
That evening, the three girls meet up at the park. None of them have been able to shake off the weight of the day, but they find comfort in each other’s company.
Zi: "I don’t know what’s going on with me lately. I feel like I’m losing control of everything."
Zy: "I get it. I feel like if I don’t win, I’m letting everyone down."
Sam: "I’ve been feeling the same way... like my writing won’t matter, like I’m not good enough."
They sit in silence for a moment, realizing that they each share a similar struggle.
Zi: "You know, we don’t have to do this alone. We’re all chasing something bigger than ourselves. Maybe... we can help each other out."
Zy: "Yeah. I’m not sure how, but maybe just being there for each other can make a difference."
Sam: "Let’s keep pushing. Together."
The three girls exchange smiles, a silent promise between them. They may be facing their own battles, but they now have a support system in each other.
