Chapter Three - Level up
Evermore
Elswyth Forest.
The bejewelled beast? That ball of light? I watch as the bright ball slowly dims; my child side tenses with fear as the adult side of me remains calm. This creature must be powerful if it took on those four monstrous beasts, even killing one alone. Slowly, the ball fades away, and the creature reveals itself to me. Huh? I blink confusingly as I see a tiny snake curled up right where the ball of light once was. Its small head is staring in my direction, and an even smaller tongue slips out to flick in the air before disappearing back into its mouth. It's so small that the snake would probably fight in my small, chubby hands. This….this creature… The snake uncurls itself, and I watch as it slithers towards me, its tongue gliding across my exposed ankle before it slithers up my legs and arm. I watch as it wraps its tiny body around my small arm, its head resting against the back of my hand. This tiny thing scared off three massive beasts and killed one on its own? I stare at the snake with a mixture of confusion, childish fear, and complete amazement. My child emotions and my adult emotions swirl together in a confusing vortex. As I stare at the snake, it feels like the world fades into silence. No rustling of trees, no howling of the wind, not a croak from a frog or a chirp from a cricket. Everything is silent. It is almost as if the world is frozen in that single moment. Slowly, the moonlight softly beams down through parts of the thick trees once more, casting the snake and me in an eerie silver glow. The snake's scales begin to glow a soft red; the scales feel rough against my skin, like stones; the scales shined like gemstones—a ruby. This small little snake is made out of pure ruby. Even its eyes glowed brightly like the crimson-coloured gem.
{Find the bejewelled beast completed} The bejewelled beast? It was a gemstone-like creature? I thought it was some fancy word, like how some companies would use fancy words to promote their product, not that the beast is made entirely out of gemstones. I can't look away from the snake; I watch as its tongue glides out of its mouth--as if tasting the air--before pulling it back in. This snake is beautiful. Ding!
Finally, I tear my eyes away from the snake and look up at the screen that popped up. It's a soft blue hue again.
{Rewards} {1000 XP} {A Mystery reward}
A bar appears above my head; the word ‘1000 XP’ slowly morphs into small sparkles and shoots towards the bar. I watch as the sparkles fill the entire bar up twice. Then slowly, the bar transforms into words and numbers. {Level up!} {Level up!} {Current Level: Level 2}
Then it fades, and the words on the screens shift again. {Do you accept the mystery reward?} {Accept} {Decline}
I stare at the screen, confused. Mystery reward? Reaching a small, chubby hand up, I hit accept. The moment I did, the words shifted. {Mystery reward accepted} {Congratulations, you obtained a bejewelled beast; he will be your ally from here on out} The snake is my reward? I look down at the snake that's still curled around my wrist watching as he slithered around my wrist, his body glows a soft silver glow, and when it disappeared, all I saw was a small ruby bracelet coiled around my wrist and parts of my hand with the design of scales. Did the snake just turn into a bracelet? Memories from earlier returned, I chose option three at random, a bracelet. Did those options hold actual meaning? The other options were a mirror and a teddy bear; if I selected one of those, would I have a different beast? I can feel my head swirling with confusing thoughts. Trying to process what the hell was even happening.
