Unexpected Love in the Midst of Chaos

Chapter 10: "Meet" Kaylee

Chapter 10: "Meet" Kaylee

Jan 14, 2025

I joined her, sitting down next to her on the bed. It felt really bad, and I mean really bad. I placed my hand on her shoulder compassionately, she probably had a lot of good memories with me that I don't remember... I smiled over at her sadly, her shoulder had tensed a bit when I touched it, but she didn't pull away fully and my hand still slightly rested there, on her shoulder.

"Can we start over...?" I asked as she finally scooched away from me. I let my hand fall back down to my lap.

There was a long tense silence. It felt like there was a thick fog in-between us. It was an eternity as we just sat there on the bed.

Eventually there was a knock that broke the silence. A voice called from the other side: "I'm going out, I'll be back late. Be safe and have fun, you two." It was Jack, Kaylee's father. I wondered where he was going, but Kaylee quickly resolved those thoughts.

"Stay sober if you're going on a date, dad!" She called after him as I heard Jack's footsteps slowly getting quieter as he got further away.

After the sound of her father's footsteps faded away, I finally spoke up. "Date?"

Kaylee scratched the back of her neck. "Yeah, my father keeps looking for his, quote on quote, soulmate, even though his marriage with my mother ultimately failed. He just couldn't bear the thought that she might have not been his soulmate. That's one of the main reasons his marriage failed." She sighed, obviously disappointed with Jack.

It seemed they had quite the interesting father-daughter relationship, but I didn't comment on it. Instead, I decided to ask a question related to soulmates. "So," I looked over at the wall for a second before my gaze met hers again. "you don't believe in the idea of a soulmate?"

"Do you?" She countered in a sort of defensive manner, though she actually seemed interested in my response.

I just sat there for a second. Do I...? I blinked a handful of times. She eventually spoke up, probably feeling bad for having been so harsh. "... Anyways... I've got to go, see ya!"

And at that she left me alone in the guest bedroom, which was temporarily mine.
