They say "Don't judge someone before you walk a mile in their shoes", right?
Well, in order for Non-Sleepy to get even a glimpse of what it is like to have IH, they need to do some drastic things. To be as sleepy as someone with IH, they'd need to either:
1. Stay awake for several (2-4) days in a row, without pick-me-ups like caffeine.
2. Go get a minor surgery which requires anesthesia. For the Americans, that would be a wisdom tooth removal. Though, the effects may not last long enough.
3. Take sleeping pills in the morning, and then try not to fall asleep. All. Day. Long.
You know those videos of people waking from anesthesia and being all out of it? People laugh at them, but also don't doubt them. But when someone has a neurological sleep disorder and act the same - confused, automatic behavior kicking in, and not remembering stuff once the brain wakes up as much as it can wake up - there is often no sympathy. No compassion. No empathy.
I think it is wrong.
And it needs to change.
Though, if people around you refuse to see the reality of living with IH...in my opinion what needs to change is them being in your life. You, or anyone should not need to deal with people like that, so I vote to throw them into the trash (as long as it is safe to do).
Alas, I ramble as my sleepy brain is fighting me.
