Finding my Familiar

Ch 7, More than power

Ch 7, More than power

Feb 03, 2025

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting an array of oranges and purples across the sky. Jinx stood at the edge of the meadow, the cool evening breeze tousling his silver hair as he gazed at the fading light. His heart raced with anticipation, and he couldn’t shake the excitement bubbling within him. Today marked a week since he’d met Zephyr, and every moment had been a whirlwind of magic, laughter, and confusion.
“Tonight’s the night, right?” Jinx asked, glancing back at Zephyr, who leaned casually against a nearby tree, the last rays of sunlight illuminating his flowing silver hair. The emerald of his eyes sparkled with mischief.
“Of course,” Zephyr replied with a smirk. “Ready to conquer the world, little wizard?”
“Maybe just the levitation spell,” Jinx retorted, rolling his eyes but unable to suppress a grin. “But I’d settle for not crashing into another tree.”
“Let’s hope you’ve learned from your past mistakes.” Zephyr stepped forward, his long white robe flowing gracefully with his movement. “How about a little warm-up? Nothing too flashy, just to get you in the zone.”
“Right.” Jinx took a deep breath, focusing on the familiar sensation of magic pooling within him. “Just a simple light spell, I think I can manage that.”
Zephyr nodded, his expression shifting from playful to serious. “Focus, Jinx. Visualize the light, feel it.”
Jinx closed his eyes, fingers tingling as he conjured the image of a glowing orb hovering above his palm. “Here goes…” He whispered, channeling the energy through his fingertips. A small spark ignited, flickering like a candle flame.
“Good,” Zephyr encouraged, his voice low and steady. “Now let it grow.”
With a rush of determination, Jinx poured more energy into the spell, and the orb expanded, illuminating the surroundings. “Look at that! I’m glowing!” He laughed, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
“Impressive, but don’t let it get too big.” Zephyr’s tone wavered between admiration and caution. “Control it.”
“I’ve got this!” Jinx boasted, but as he spoke, the orb flickered, wobbling in the air. “Uh-oh…”
“Jinx!” Zephyr exclaimed, moving closer as the light erupted, sending a wave of energy that knocked Jinx backward. “Ahhh!” Jinx screamed, crashing into the grass with a soft *thud*.
“Are you alright?” Zephyr rushed to his side, worry etched across his features.
“Yeah, just a little… dramatic flair,” Jinx chuckled, sitting up and shaking his head. “I swear, I’m not trying to be the world’s worst wizard.”
“Maybe you should consider a career in acrobatics,” Zephyr teased, helping him to his feet. “But let’s stick to magic for now.”
“Agreed.” Jinx brushed off the grass, a bit embarrassed but still electrified by the thrill of casting magic. “What’s next? More practice or—”
“Dinner first,” Zephyr interrupted, leading Jinx back toward their hobbit home. “You need your strength. Practicing magic on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster.”
“Good point.” Jinx rubbed his stomach, realizing just how hungry he was. “I could eat a dragon’s share of food.”
Zephyr chuckled, the sound rich and warm. “Lucky for you, I’m not a dragon right now. You’d be in trouble otherwise.”
“What’s for dinner?” Jinx asked, his curiosity piqued as they entered the cozy little home, the familiar scents of herbs and spices enveloping them.
“Something simple. I found some fresh carrots and herbs in the garden.” Zephyr moved to the small stove, his movements graceful and fluid. “And some bread. Can’t go wrong with bread.”
“Bread is the true hero of any meal,” Jinx agreed, watching as Zephyr prepared the food. “You’re quite the chef for a dragon. I’d expect fire-breathing and roasting rather than sautéing.”
“Don’t underestimate my culinary skills,” Zephyr replied with a playful glint in his emerald eyes. “Dragons have a refined palate, you know.”
Jinx laughed, leaning against the counter. “I can’t imagine you in a chef’s hat, but I’ll take your word for it.”
As they shared small banter, the atmosphere shifted, the warmth of companionship enveloping them like a soft blanket. Jinx felt a flutter in his chest as he watched Zephyr work, his features illuminated by the soft glow of the fire. It was moments like these that made him forget the weight of his magical challenges, even if just for a while.
“Do you think I’ll ever be able to control my magic?” Jinx asked suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled between them.
“Of course,” Zephyr said, his voice steady and reassuring. “With practice, you’ll get there. It’s a journey, remember?”
“I just want to be good enough,” Jinx admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “I want to impress you.”
“Impress me?” Zephyr turned, a smile spreading across his face. “You’ve already done that, Jinx. Every time you try, I’m impressed by your courage.”
“Really?” Jinx blinked, surprised but pleased. “I thought you were just being nice.”
“Not at all. You’re stronger than you think.” Zephyr placed a hand on Jinx’s shoulder, the warmth of his touch sending a comforting wave through him. “Magic isn’t just about power; it’s about heart. And you have that in spades.”
“Thanks, Zephyr,” Jinx said, feeling the warmth of his words seep into his soul. “That means a lot coming from you.”
They shared a moment of silence, the light crackling in the fireplace and the delicious aroma of dinner filling the air. Jinx couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something deeper between them, a connection that went beyond that of a wizard and his familiar.
“Dinner’s ready,” Zephyr announced, breaking the tension as he placed the food on the table. “Let’s eat before it gets cold.”
Jinx eagerly settled into his chair, his stomach rumbling in appreciation. “This looks amazing!”
“Just wait until you taste it.” Zephyr took a seat across from him, a glimmer of pride in his eyes as Jinx took his first bite. “Well?”
“Mmm!” Jinx exclaimed, savoring the flavors. “It’s even better than it looks! You really are a culinary genius.”
“Flattery will get you everywhere,” Zephyr joked, his tone light. “But I’ll take it.”
As they ate, the conversation flowed freely, laughter and playful jabs punctuating their meal. Jinx felt a sense of ease settle around them, as if the world outside didn’t exist. It was just him and Zephyr, two companions sharing a moment of peace amidst the chaos of magic.
“Have you ever thought about what it means to have a familiar?” Jinx asked, wiping a crumb from his mouth.
Zephyr’s expression shifted slightly, a hint of seriousness creeping in. “It’s a bond unlike any other. A familiar is more than just a companion; they share your journey, your growth. They are a part of you.”
“Do you feel that way?” Jinx asked, his heart pounding. “About me, I mean.”
“Absolutely,” Zephyr replied, his eyes unwavering. “I chose you for a reason, Jinx. Your spirit, your determination… it resonates with my own.”
Jinx felt a warmth spread through him, a connection he had yearned for. “I’m glad. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”
“Neither have I,” Zephyr confessed, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. “It’s… refreshing.”
Jinx’s heart raced as he met Zephyr’s gaze, the air thick with unspoken words. But before he could voice what lingered on the tip of his tongue, Zephyr broke the moment with a teasing grin. “Let’s not get too sappy, though. We still have spells to practice!”
“Right!” Jinx laughed, grateful for the lightheartedness that returned. “I’m ready whenever you are.”
After dinner, they cleaned up quickly, Jinx feeling increasingly eager to try the levitation spell again. The earlier mishap still lingered in his mind, but the encouragement from Zephyr ignited a new fire within him.
“Now, let’s head outside,” Zephyr said, leading the way back to the meadow. The stars began to twinkle overhead, the night draping the world in a blanket of mystery. “Tonight will be perfect for practicing.”
“Got it.” Jinx took a deep breath, grounding himself as they reached the open space. “I’m ready to focus this time. No more flying lessons.”
“Just remember to visualize the energy flowing through you,” Zephyr instructed. “And don’t rush it.”
“Right.” Jinx stood tall, feeling the gentle breeze against his skin as he centered his thoughts. “I want to levitate that stone again.”
“Good choice,” Zephyr encouraged, stepping back to give him space. “Take your time.”
Jinx closed his eyes, imagining the smooth stone he had spotted earlier, feeling the magic pulse within him. “Here goes…” He focused, visualizing the energy building, flowing from his core to his fingertips.
At first, nothing happened. Jinx felt the tension build, but he kept his composure. “I can do this,” he murmured, channeling his focus.
With a surge of determination, he released the energy, directing it toward the stone. This time, the magic hummed in response, and the stone lifted just a few inches off the ground, hovering gently.
“See?” Zephyr exclaimed, pride radiating from him. “You’re doing it!”
“I’m doing it!” Jinx grinned, exhilaration coursing through him. But just as he began to revel in his success, the stone suddenly wobbled and crashed back to the ground with a *thud*.
“Ah, come on!” Jinx groaned, frustration creeping in. “I almost had it!”
“Almost is a step forward.” Zephyr’s voice remained steady, calm. “Let’s try again. Remember, control is key.”
“Okay, okay.” Jinx took a deep breath, shaking off the disappointment. “I can do this.”
As they continued practicing, the night deepened around them, the stars twinkling like scattered diamonds. Jinx felt the magic flow more easily now, and with each attempt, he grew more confident. The connection between him and Zephyr deepened with each shared moment of laughter and encouragement.
“Look at you go!” Zephyr cheered after Jinx successfully levitated the stone for a few seconds longer than before. “You’re making progress!”
“I am!” Jinx beamed, feeling buoyed by Zephyr’s support. “This is incredible!”
“Just wait until you master the next level of spells,” Zephyr said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “There’s so much to explore together.”
“Together.” The word hung in the air, and Jinx felt a rush of warmth at the thought. “I like the sound of that.”
“I do too.” Zephyr stepped closer, his presence radiating comfort. “We’re a team, Jinx. Always will be.”
“Always.” Jinx smiled, feeling a sense of belonging wash over him. It was exhilarating, and he couldn’t help but wonder what other adventures awaited them.
As they practiced late into the night, laughter and shared moments of frustration mingled in the air. Jinx felt the magic grow within him, and with Zephyr at his side, he knew he was exactly where he was meant to be.
“Just remember,” Zephyr said as they finally paused to catch their breath, “magic is about more than power. It’s about connection and intention, just like us.”
“Yeah,” Jinx agreed, his heart racing. “I think I’m starting to understand that.”
“Good. Now, let’s take a break,” Zephyr suggested, plopping down onto the grass beside him. “Even the best wizards need to recharge.”
Jinx joined him, the cool earth beneath them grounding him. “What do you want to do? More spells? Or maybe a story?”
“A story sounds delightful. Something magical, perhaps?” Zephyr leaned back, a playful smile on his lips.
“Alright, how about the tale of the Dragon Thief?” Jinx began, excitement bubbling in his chest. “Once upon a time, in a realm not so different from ours…”
As Jinx spun his tale, the stars twinkled above, and he felt the bond between him and Zephyr solidify. It was more than just magic; it was companionship, adventure, and a promise of tomorrow. And as he lost himself in the story, he knew he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, with Zephyr by his side.
