"...What?" I blinked back.
Cal closes his eyes again and lets out a deep sigh, "That 'girl' isn't a girl. He's also my brother, not my date." My head was about to burst with his new information. "Couldn’t you tell that’s a disguise?"
I put my fingers to my temple, letting that information sink in. "Okay...but why is he doing it? And why is he disguising as a girl and you're not?"
With that a groan came from Cal as he sat up from my lap and stared at me, now that I wasn't totally stressed out I finally got a good look at him. Pale white skin, a hint of bags under his bright blue eyes while moles scattered his face. His hair was stuck up in places, though he still held a maturity to him. Honestly, the dude do be lookin' fine...Definitely has a girlfriend.
The boy chuckled a bit before his eyes almost soften, "You really don't know who we are, do you?"
"Should I..?"
Cal opened his mouth to answer but was soon interrupted by a face popping into my view.
"Hi again, Emalee!" Cal's (not date) brother beamed in front of me. "Now that I’m back—introduction! I'm Oliver—though Callahan probably told you this was a disguise judging by the look you're giving me right now!" I didn't know what face Oliver was talking about but I awkwardly laughed at his comment anyways.
The disguised boy held out a hand for me to take them and without thinking I took it, "Also I did some digging around and I think we found the girl your looking for!"
"Really!? Where is she?" At this news I could feel my heart leap out of my chest, I stood up from the bench and subconsciously lean towards the boy while gripping his hands. He seemed to beam at this the closer I got to him, although I was oblivious to it.
"Well it actually pretty funny, she—"
"Emalee!" A sudden force came at me, all I could see was a head of hair as the girl tighten her grip on me.
"J-Juniper!?" I pulled her back to see her in a puffy red mess, most of the makeup she had put on this afternoon was smeared as tears continued to roll down the young girl's face. "Where the hell were you!"
"I-I didn't walk to far away!" She blurted out snort bubbles foaming from her nose the more she talked. "I saw a stand that sold limited edition phone charms a-and I just wanted to look but when I went to the bench you were at yo-you were gone!"
I was quiet for a moment, not really knowing how to respond to the blubbering girl. This is probably how Oliver felt when I did the same thing to him earlier... Suddenly I felt my cheeks burn remembering that moment as the girl in front of me continued to speak; "Luckily this girl found me before we got too separated...but you had me and mom worried sick since you've never been to the capital!"
Just before I could answer her, Oliver poked his head in between the two of us and tilts his head. "You've never been to the capital, Emalee..?!"
I blink back at the boy who pretty much shoved his way into my conversation with Juniper and slide between the two of us. "Uhm...yeah..."
"Oh wow really!?" Oliver got closer to me making me a bit uncomfortable, "You know, I actually have lived here all my life so I could totally show you around if you want! There's this small little icecream place on Central street that has the best gelato—"
The boy tried to reach for my hands and was shortly stopped when Oliver was pulled back by his brother. "Okay—that's enough."
"Cal—" Again I saw the dark look cross the boy's face and again it was gone before I could think about it. "She's never been here before so I'm just being nice."
"And freaking her out in the process, so knock it off."
The two brothers stare at each other for a moment, neither one of them back down to the point it make me more uncomfortable then when Callahan had his head on my lap. I looked over at Juniper who wasn't playing any attention as her fingers fly across her phone screen. She was probably texting her mom.
The lighter haired boy sighs, I look over at him and he is staring at me with a disheartening look. "I'm sorry, Emalee—if I did freak you out..."
"N-Nono, you're okay! If anything I should really thank you for finding Juniper for me—" Or helping her find me from the sounds of it. "I was born and raised in Brookswit so my little district is nothing compared to the capital...Very confusing without my tour guides." I gesture towards Juniper who was still typing away.
I turn back to the boys and give them a tiny smile as I bow my head slightly, "But really thank you very much, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to help me."
The two stand there for a moment, almost shocked from the gesture, though I wasn't surprised. I was a bit old fashion when it came to thanking people genuinely; just like in Asian cultures, in Themol bowing was a sign of respect not really practiced now-a-days. Although bows were still common when meeting royalty...but since most people never even see any royal ever, it was mostly jokingly done between friends and family members. Me doing it so serenely must be very surprising.
"Charis did say you two were a bit old fashion, I see what she meant." I hear Juniper chuckle, I rolled my eyes at the statement and that seemed to snap the two boys out of their shocked state.
"O-Oh it's nothing, Emalee!" Oliver chuckled almost nervously, "I'm just glad that we were able to find her!"
Just then a low gurgling noise came from the lighter haired boy although him and his brother didn't seemed fazed by it.
"Uhm..." I pause not knowing it if I should bring up his stomach growling, but continue anyways; "Are you...are you hungry..?"
"Always~!" The boy hums without a second thought, I let out a chuckle.
"Well I can always buy you some lunch as a way of saying thanks—if you two aren't busy." As soon as I said this I started to regret it, what the hell—why would they want to do that!? Also you're here with Juniper and Mari, you can't exactly ditch them to hang out with two strangers that you don't know! Beside you left your phone at their house so you won't be able to contact them if you did...
"Really?!" Oliver's eyes almost sparkled, crap you couldn't just tell him never mind..! "That would be awesome! Oh oh, we could go to this cafe that has these authentic New Orleans style beignets—"
"Sorry—apparently not today." Once again Callahan interrupted him pulling him back away from me a bit.
"Cal, why—" Oliver started with an almost growl but his brother was quick to flash his phone in his face.
"We have to go, like now." I couldn't see what was on the screen or Oliver's facial expression but it made the young boy pause.
Without a word, Oliver slung the backpack he wore off his back and pulled out a pen from one of the pockets. He then proceeded to turn towards me and grab my arm.
"Wha—!?"
"My number." He answered with a hum as he scribbled it down, "That way we can reschedule our date!"
D-Date?! I felt my cheek warm up a bit, "I-I never said—!"
He finished the number by adding a little heart at the end and with a satisfied hum he clicked his pen close. "Come on, Romeo." Callahan sighed impatiently.
"Till next time, Emalee!" He gave my arm a squeeze and turned in a hurry fashion with his brother. Before I knew it the two of them were gone only the number on my arm burned in their absences.
"I didn't know you swung that way, Emalee." Juniper hummed, I whip my head around to face her. "I'm not judging! Just kind of surprising..."
I didn't make a comment on her statement, I mean she didn't know Oliver was in a disgust—hell I still didn't know the exact reason he was disguising in the first place—Callahan never told me the reason.
"You really don't know who we are, do you?"
"Should I..?"
Just who were they..?
I couldn't help but stare at the numbers written on my arm.
"If you're not going to call, I will." Juniper comments not even glancing in my direction to know I was still staring at the number.
It was already late at night. Juniper kept me company in her room with talks about her bias and the kingdoms history and whatnot. Honestly, I couldn't even process any information she was giving me—hell the whole time I was trying to have the balls to message this boy that I meant less than 24-hours ago.
"Maybe I shouldn't." I mumble, half tempted to just wash it off my forearm and erase the memory from my brain so I could focus on the bigger issue. Charis' dress for the festival. "I have too much stuff to worry about then this..."
"Maybe..." Juniper said almost nonchalantly as she swipes through her phone. "Or you could call her and she could be the love of your life." I scoffed at that.
The girl sat up a bit and put her phone down to look me in the eye. "Girl, you're a single 22 year old—it's not bad having an fling while you're here in town." I opened my mouth to add a statement but the 13 year old continues; "Besides she said she lived her all her life maybe she can help you with your dress mission or something."
"I—...Actually," I paused thinking about it a bit; Oliver did say he lived in the capital all his life. He might know of some places that would still have some dresses available. "That might not be a bad idea."
Honestly, you were desperate.
"I know, I'm a genius." Juniper grinned going back to swiping through her phone once more.
Without any more hesitation, I began to type in the number.
A day or so later...
I'll never get used to the capital... I immediately thought as I stare up at the busy street main street. It felt just like being in an American city with tall building and streets full of people. Very different from the market places I had been at the previous days.
"Emalee!!" A voice shouts from behind me, I slowly turn my head to see Oliver and I almost had to do a spit-take.
He dressed completely different from when I first met him; he actually dress like a boy! He sported dark denim jeans with a sweat shirt—it's hood up covering short light brown hair. His bright yellow eye were hidden behind dark sunglasses as he excitedly waves both of his arms in the air.
"O-Oliver!" I stutter back as he approaches, taking note that he seemed taller then before.
"It's been forever since I last saw you!" He says this almost as if the two of us had been old friends reuniting after many years—it also didn't help that he pulled me into a hug.
I chuckle awkwardly, not really hugging back as I answered. "W-Well it's been a minute or so, hasn't it?" I look around to see if I could spot the darker hair boy. "Is...Callahan coming today..?"
I felt the boy pause for a moment, I couldn't see his face since he still had a tight hold on me but I guessed that face wasn't smiling as big anymore.
"He's...well, you'll probably won't see much of him again." He laughs bitterly as he finally let's me go. "Anyways let's not talk about him; It's Oliver and Emalee day! Let's go to Aunt Mindy's before they run out of the peach cobblers!" He grabs hold of my hand and starts to guild me through the busy city streets.
"Aunt Mindy's..?" I ask hesitantly, the brunette turns to me with a smile.
"My favorite restaurant in the whole capital!" He grins then places a hand on his stomach. "Just thinking about it makes my stomach growl. Aunt Mindy is such an saint for creating such a heavenly place to eat at."
Quick this would be a good opportunity to ask how much he knows about the capital!
"So..." I start, feeling a bit awkward as Oliver still has a strong hold on my hand. "You must know a lot of places here if that's your favorite restaurant in the whole capital."
Oliver chuckles at my statement, "Well I've grown up here my whole life so I've had time to try every food place that has ever existed in here."
"So growing up here you must have a lot of shops as well, right?" I egg on a bit but the boy didn't seem to notice. "You know...somewhere nice to shop at..?"
The boy paused his walking abruptly, making me slam into his back suddenly. He seemed to be thinking about it, his other hand on his chin as he looked up. "Hmm...nope, I can only think of are food places."
I collapsed onto the ground.
"Emalee!"
"That's it..." I stare at the ground as I place your free hand to push away my hair. "I'm dead for sure...She's going to kill me..." I was almost positive people were staring but I couldn't care less.
"What going on?! Who's going to kill you Emalee!?" Oliver crouched down beside me and he finally letting my hand so he can put both of his on my shoulder.
I look up at him, he honestly seemed really concerned for me which made me feel a bit bad. After all I did really only invite him out today so that I could see if he knew any places for dresses...
Taking a deep breath in, I sigh; "My sister. Although she wouldn't actually kill me; she would have a mental break down and maybe never talk to me ever again."
The concern look slightly lessens as he helps me up from the ground. He looks around for a bit before smiling, "Come on, you can tell me more about it when we're eating."
