CHAPTER 9 : A Change In The Air

CHAPTER 9 : A Change In The Air

Feb 17, 2025

Jack stood at the edge of the forest, the distant hum of Eldergrove's town life carrying on the breeze. Despite the cool evening air, a bead of sweat trickled down his brow. Something was wrong, and he could feel it. He had been trying to piece it together, but the more he thought about it, the more elusive the truth seemed. And then there was Justin—a man who had appeared out of nowhere, blending into town life with a charm that felt almost too perfect.

"Thinking too hard again, mate?" came a familiar, upbeat voice.

Jack turned to see Jones, his old friend, making his way over, a grin plastered across his face. Jones was slightly thinner than Jack but just as tall, with a bald head and a neatly trimmed beard that framed his mischievous smile. There was a casual swagger in his step, like he didn’t have a care in the world. But Jack knew better—Jones was sharp, and when he needed to, he could cut through the fog of confusion with a clarity that Jack admired.

“Good to see you, Jones,” Jack said, managing a smile. “I didn’t think you’d be back in Eldergrove so soon.”

“What can I say?” spreading his arms. “I missed the quiet life. Plus, I heard you were getting all broody, and I couldn’t let you have all the fun. So, what’s eating you?”

Jack hesitated, unsure where to start. “It’s... hard to explain. Things have been off around here lately. People are tense, there’s this undercurrent of fear, and I don’t think it’s just because of the usual town gossip. Then there’s this new guy, Justin. He’s got everyone feeling... comfortable, somehow, but it feels wrong. Like he’s too good at it.”

Jones raised an eyebrow. “Justin, huh? Haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him yet, but from what you’re saying, he sounds like someone worth getting to know.”

Jack nodded, though his expression was still troubled. “It’s not just that. I can’t shake this feeling that something bigger is happening, something we can’t see.”

Jones leaned back against a tree, crossing his arms. “Then maybe we should see it, Jack. Whatever it is. We can’t just sit around and wait for it to smack us in the face. Let’s start poking around, asking questions. Subtle-like, of course.”

“You make it sound easy,” Jack said, a wry smile tugging at his lips.

“That’s because it is..... Well, at least the part where we start. We’ll figure out the rest as we go.”

---

The sun was setting by the time Jack and Jones made their way back to Eldergrove. The town was slipping into the quiet of evening, with only the occasional sound of laughter or the bark of a dog echoing through the streets. Despite the stillness, Jack couldn’t shake the feeling that the village was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

They passed by the village square, where a few vendors were closing up shop for the night. Jack’s eyes scanned the area, half-expecting to see Justin. Sure enough, there he was, standing near a group of villagers, engaging them in conversation. As Jack watched, he saw how the man’s easy smile and calm demeanor seemed to put everyone at ease. But to Jack, that was the problem. It was too smooth, too effortless.

“Is that him?” Jones asked, following Jack’s gaze. “Justin?”

“Yeah, That’s him.”

Jones studied Justin for a moment, a thoughtful expression on his face. “I see what you mean. He’s got that ‘man of the people’ vibe, but it’s almost... polished. Like he’s practiced it.”

“That’s what I’m worried about,” Jack said. “It’s like he knows exactly what to say to make people feel comfortable, and it’s working. But I don’t trust it.”

“Well then,” Jones said, clapping Jack on the back, “let’s get to know the man. See what he’s really about.”

Jack felt a surge of nervous energy as they approached Justin. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but he knew they had to be careful. If Justin was hiding something, they couldn’t let him know they were onto him.

“Evening, gents,” Justin said, turning to greet them with that same easy smile. “I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure. I’m Justin.”

“Jones........ Bryant Jones” said Jack’s friend, extending his hand. “And this is Jack. We’ve been hearing a lot about you.”

“All good things, I hope,” Justin said, shaking Jones’s hand.

Jack forced a smile. “You seem to have made quite an impression in Eldergrove. Not many newcomers settle in as quickly as you have.”

Justin chuckled, a sound that was warm and genuine, yet somehow unsettling. “I guess I’m just lucky. People here have been very welcoming.”

Jones leaned in slightly, as if sharing a secret. “It’s a small village. We’re all a bit nosy around here, so you’re bound to make a few friends—or enemies—quickly.”

Justin’s smile widened just a fraction. “Well, I hope it’s more friends than enemies.”

Jack watched the exchange carefully, trying to read between the lines. Justin’s responses were smooth, but there was a guardedness to them, as if he was choosing his words carefully. It made Jack’s skin crawl.

“Well, we’ll let you get back to it,” Jones said, giving Justin a friendly nod. “Just thought we’d introduce ourselves. Maybe we can grab a drink sometime.”

“I’d like that,” Justin said, his eyes lingering on Jack for a moment before he turned back to the villagers. “You two take care.”

As they walked away, Jones glanced at Jack, his expression serious for once. “He’s hiding something. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s definitely more to him than he’s letting on.”

Jack nodded, feeling both validated and uneasy. “We need to find out what it is, but we can’t push too hard. If he gets suspicious, we might lose our chance.”

“Then we’ll just have to be smart about it. Start by talking to some of the villagers, see what they’ve noticed. If there’s anything off about Justin, someone must have picked up on it.”

---

The next morning, Jack made his way to Eamon’s cottage. He had meant to visit sooner, but with everything going on, he hadn’t found the time. Now, more than ever, he needed the old sage’s guidance.

Eamon was outside, as he often was, tending to his herb garden. When he saw Jack approaching, he straightened up, wiping his hands on his robe. “Jack,” he said with a gentle smile. “I had a feeling you’d be stopping by today.”

“I’m sorry it’s been a while,” Jack said, feeling a familiar pang of guilt. “I’ve been... preoccupied.”

“No need to apologize, I know you’ve had a lot on your mind. Tell me, what troubles you?”

Jack hesitated, then took a deep breath. “It’s Justin. There’s something about him that doesn’t sit right with me. He’s... too good at making people feel at ease, and I can’t help but think it’s intentional. Like he’s trying to win everyone over.”

Eamon’s eyes darkened slightly, and he motioned for Jack to follow him inside. Once they were seated, he spoke in a low, thoughtful tone. “I have sensed it too. There is a subtle power to his words, a way of steering conversations without appearing to lead them. It is... unsettling.”

“Do you think he could be connected to the unrest? Is he behind it?”

Eamon sighed, his gaze distant. “I do not know. But there are forces at work here that I do not fully understand. If Justin is involved, we must tread carefully.”

“What should we do?” Jack asked, struggling to keep the frustration out of his voice. “We can’t just wait around while he... while he does whatever he’s doing.”

“Patience, Jack,” Eamon said gently. “I know it is not easy, but we must learn more before we act. Observe him, listen to what he says, and perhaps the truth will reveal itself.”

---

That evening, Jack and Jones reconvened at the local tavern. They had spent the day talking to villagers, gathering bits and pieces of information, but nothing definitive had come up. Most people seemed to like Justin, praising his kindness and willingness to help, but that only made Jack more suspicious. How could one man win over so many people in such a short time?

As they sat nursing their drinks, Jack’s gaze drifted across the room, and he spotted Justin sitting alone at a corner table. The man was reading, a faint smile playing on his lips, as if he were completely at ease. Jack’s mind raced, trying to make sense of it all. Was Justin a threat, or was he just another victim of Jack’s paranoia?

Jones nudged him. “You’re staring, mate.”

“Can’t help it, Every time I think I have him figured out, he does something that makes me doubt myself.”

“Then maybe that’s the point, Maybe he wants you to doubt. To question everything, even yourself.”

Jack’s head snapped up, and he looked at Jones, realizing how true those words felt. “But why? What’s he trying to achieve?”

“I don’t know,” Jones said, leaning back in his chair. “But I have a feeling we’re going to find out. And I don’t think we’re going to like the answer.”

The two friends sat in silence for a while, each lost in their thoughts. The tavern’s warmth felt stifling, the laughter and chatter around them only amplifying the tension. Jack knew they were on the brink of something—something that could change everything. But whether it was for better or worse, he couldn’t say.

As they prepared to leave, Jack glanced over at Justin one last time. The man’s eyes met his, and for a brief moment, Jack thought he saw a flicker of something dark, something cold and calculating. Then it was gone, replaced by that familiar, disarming smile.

Jack shivered, his anxiety deepening. He knew, without a doubt, that they were running out of time.
