Archer wakes early the next day and prepares breakfast for both him and Kiel.
Work started for both of them that morning at 8 am and both were nervous and excited. Archer finished making breakfast and set the table before heading to Kiel’s room.
“Kiel get up breakfast is on the table,” He flicks the light on and walks in.
Kiel instantly perks up and throws the blanket off himself, revealing that he was already dressed in a baby blue crew neck and overalls and ready for work. There was a big grin on his face as he looked up at Archer.
“Good Morning!”
“Whoa, look who’s up and ready for the day,” Archer chuckles at Kiel’s energy.
Kiel twists on his heels, the big smile still adorned on his face. “I got up at 4:30 and showered and got dressed on my own.”
“That is certainly an improvement for you, though your sweater is on backward.”
Kiel looks down and blushes slightly. “Oh, I didn’t notice,” He says fixing his shirt quickly. “But does everything else look okay?”
“Sure does,” Archer ruffles Kiel’s hair and turns to the door. “Since you are already dressed come down for breakfast.”
Kiel’s face lights up even more and him and Archer head down stairs. Once they walk into the kitchen Kiel is hit with a waft of eggs and toast. Yes it wasn’t his old cooks regular cooking but it still warmed his heart knowing it came from Archer and that he cared. He sits down while Archer pours himself a glass of water and then hands Kiel a fork and a napkin. As he takes a bite Kiel’s eyes immediately close at the warm saltiness of the eggs.
“mph…this is waaaay better than the old cooks, no offense,” Kiel mutters his eyes still closed.
“Well I’m glad, I almost burned the toast,” Archer chuckles and takes a seat across from Kiel.
“You know I’ve never had your food before, let alone see you cook,” Kiel rests his chin on his palm and looks in Archer’s direction.
“Yeah, I’ve cooked a lot when I was younger. My parents both worked a lot and I was stuck at home with my little brother.”
“Oh really, how is your brother and parents now?”
“Well both my parents died when I graduated and my brother is off to college,” Archer says though not sad but very accepted of his situation.
“Archer,” Kiel says sympathetically. “I didn’t know.”
“No, no its okay, I’ve accepted things and me and my brother have grown from it. Its just a part of life.”
“You sure, I’ve known you what? three years? and I haven’t seen you show emotions, let alone talk about them.”
“I know I have a habit of closing myself off but really I’m okay. Me and my brother took time off school and consoled each other after their deaths for a few weeks,” Archer smiles.
They continue to talk about Archer’s parents and his brother and what not. After a few minutes Archer cleans up while Kiel gets his stuff for work ready. The pair walk out of the house and into Archer’s car, he revs the engine and they drive off.
The cafe door rings as Archer and Kiel walk in and a warm voice speaks up.
“Hello! You two must be Kiel and Archer,” She smiles and walks over to greet them. “My name is Kiara nice to meet you,” She shakes Archer’s hand and turns Kiel.
“Kiel, Archer has told me so much about you and your situations. I’ve made some adjustments to help you and make sure customers don’t take advantage of your disability.”
Kiel looks over in her direction and smiles. “Nice to meet you too. I wasn’t there when Archer applied for our spots but he said you were nice. A-and I hope I can learn from you and the others,” He says nervous but also excited.
Kiara shows them through the kitchen and the ordering area before giving them their uniforms. Archer was given a dark navy polo shirt with the cafe logo and Kiel a dark navy apron along with the cafe logo, plus the two of them get name tags. The two of them go to the locker room and change before starting their training. Kiara walks Kiel through how to work the ordering machine and how to pay. She is patient and collective when helping him and tending to every question he has to answer. On the other side of the cafe one of the delivery workers named Oliver, helps Archer through his route and how to store the food in the car. Soon the two groups join together and talk as a group.
“Well I think Archer is all set, how about Kiel?” Oliver smiles, patting Archer on the back.
Kiara smiles and nods. “Kiel is a fast learner despite his disability, I’m jealous.”
“Yeah everything seems super simple,” Archer states.
“I agree,” Kiel smiles.
“Well everything is all set. The two of you just need to arrive here everyday at 8 am but not on weekends and you get paid every Friday,” Kiara states.
“Also,” Oliver pipes in. “You can either take your uniforms home or keep them here, though I would advise taking them home so you can wash them.”
“Yeah sure thing, and thank you both and the others again. This is really helping me and Kiel out,” Archer smiles.
“No problem,” Oliver and Kiara say in unison.
“Anyways see you tomorrow at eight and have a good night you two,” Kiara smiles and waves them off as Archer leads Kiel to the car.
They drive home with smiles on their faces and excitement in the air. When they get home Archer throws a pizza in the oven and they relax. After eating the pizza, Archer helps Kiel get ready for bed. The sun was dark when Kiel’s head finally hit the pillow and so did Archer’s as they drift into a deep sleep.
