Ryou’s jaw clenched. "Then maybe it’s time for things to change."

The Watchers exchanged glances. "Change without understanding leads to catastrophe. This bond you share, this intertwining of power—it is unstable. We do not know what it will become. And if you cannot control it…"

Aiko’s breath hitched. She knew the unspoken threat in those words.

If they couldn’t control it, the Watchers would not allow it to exist.

Ryou must have felt her tension because his hand found hers again, fingers threading through hers with quiet reassurance. "Then we’ll learn. Together."

Aiko pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the lingering warmth of something vast and unknowable still stirring inside her. She looked up at him, the truth settling over her like a whisper of fate.

"We aren’t just part of the balance anymore," she murmured. "We are the balance."

The Watchers stiffened.

Mei let out a low curse. "Well. That’s a problem."
