Embers of Hope

(79) The Road to Balaydra

(79) The Road to Balaydra

Mar 07, 2025

With Olivia and the Avalorian royal family gone from the village, their absence lingered like a missing piece in the air. The once-bustling atmosphere felt subdued, as if the weight of their departure pressed down on those left behind.

Mira sighed, her gaze drifting out of the kitchen window toward the distant city. Though she tried to push away her unease, it gnawed at her, an ever-present whisper in the back of her mind.

Beside her, Zephyr busied himself preparing a light meal before their journey to Balaydra, but his attention was never far from her.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the faintest flicker of distress in her features—her brows knit together, her fingers absently tracing small circles on the wooden countertop. He felt it too, the sting of Olivia’s parting words, but Mira… he knew they had struck her even deeper.

“She’ll be okay, my love,” Zephyr murmured, pausing his work long enough to glance at her properly. “She has Onyx and Topaz to look out for her.”

Mira flinched, barely perceptible, but enough for him to notice. Her shoulders sagged slightly as she let out a dry chuckle, the sound devoid of humor.

“I know. You’re absolutely right.” She turned to face him with a bittersweet smile, rubbing her left arm absentmindedly. “It’s just… I have a sinking feeling something will go wrong.” Her voice was soft, edged with something vulnerable—an instinct she couldn’t shake.

Zephyr placed the finished plates on the countertop, then turned his full attention to her. Without a word, he reached out, cupping her cheek in his hand, his thumb tracing gentle circles against her skin.

For a fleeting moment, she leaned into his warmth, finding comfort in the steady presence he always provided.

Then, with a playful glint in his eye, he pinched her nose between his fingers.

“Hnn! What’s this for?!” she protested, voice muffled as she wriggled free.

Zephyr chuckled, his deep, rich laughter melting the tension in the air. “You worry too much, my love.” He leaned in, resting his forehead against hers. “No matter how much the odds may be stacked against us, as long as I have you, and you have me, nothing can stop us from seeing the world in a new light once the dust settles.”

Tears welled in Mira’s eyes, falling in quick succession as she let out a soft, airy laugh. “How do you always know the right thing to say?”

He smirked, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s what gets me through the dark thoughts—thinking of ways to ease your burdens and make your beautiful face light up.”

Mira inhaled deeply, composing herself as Zephyr stepped back to bring their meal to the table. She sat across from him, eyes lingering on his face for a moment before finally digging in.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve you,” she said between bites, her voice filled with quiet reverence. “But I feel incredibly lucky every day to have you by my side, Zephyr.”

Zephyr didn’t respond immediately, but her words lingered in his mind.

Did she truly believe she hadn’t suffered enough to deserve happiness? Would she feel more secure in their relationship if they had met under normal circumstances—perhaps at a regular Bicentennial meeting, rather than amid future war and loss?

He shoved the thoughts aside. They were useless musings, distractions from what mattered. Instead, he focused on the present—the way she sipped her water, occasionally stealing glances at him with a fond smile, or the way her face softened with each bite of food he had prepared.

Their meal ended in comfortable silence, and soon enough, it was time to leave Verhmina.

As they stepped outside, they were met with a gathered crowd of fairies. At the forefront stood Rowan, chest puffed out as if he had been preparing for this moment.

“My Queen, may I accompany you on your journey?” he asked, bowing with his fist pressed against his chest like a loyal soldier.

Mira hesitated. For the briefest moment, anguish flickered across her face, though she masked it quickly. She glanced at him, searching for the right words.

“I’m sorry, Rowan,” she finally said, voice laced with genuine regret. “I already asked Dimenika and some of the other Ice fairies to accompany Zephyr, Kiran, and I on our journey.” Her hands twisted together awkwardly as she spoke.

Rowan straightened slightly, expression unreadable. “Please, don’t apologize, my Queen. You don’t need to explain your decisions to me,” he said quickly, bowing even deeper this time.

But Mira stepped forward, shaking her head. “No, I do need to explain.” Her voice dropped so only he could hear. “I thought… you might want to take some more time to rest your mind and heart after everything that happened in Glaemoor.”

Rowan flinched. The memories surged forth unbidden—the corpses of Earth dragons littering the mountain, the haunting silence of the fairies as they realized their magic was lost, the utter devastation carved into the faces of his people.

And Sinia… that smug, taunting smirk of hers beneath her hood, as if she knew these nightmares would never leave him. His fingers curled into a fist at his side, shaking slightly.

Mira cleared her throat, drawing him back to the present.

“Besides,” she continued, her tone lighter now, “I need someone to watch over Verhmina while I’m gone. And there’s no one I trust more to do it than you.”

Rowan’s eyes widened, lips parting slightly in disbelief. Him? Left in charge of the entire village? It seemed so surreal that, without thinking, he reached up and pinched his cheek—hard.

Mira stifled a laugh at his reaction. “Will you do me this favor, Rowan?”

Before he could respond, a voice cut through the air.

“Sorry to interrupt your, uh, obviously important conversation, but weren’t we supposed to leave like five minutes ago?”

Dimenika stood among the gathered Ice fairies, arms crossed. She was striking, with long silver and pink-tipped hair tied into loose twin buns, her vibrant presence contrasting with the usual composed demeanor of her kind. She was nothing like the other Ice fairies—boisterous, outspoken, utterly unfiltered.

Mira still wasn’t sure how she felt about her, but perhaps this journey would be an opportunity to understand her better.

“Yes! You’re right,” Mira said, eyes widening in realization. She turned back to Rowan. “So, will you do it?”

Rowan exhaled sharply, rubbing the back of his neck. He despised the idea of leading the Forest fairies, but… he couldn’t refuse her. Not when she was looking at him like that, and not when she was depending on him.

“I will do you proud, my Queen,” he said at last, bowing his head once more. “I wish you all safe travels.”

And with that, Mira, Zephyr, and Dimenika’s group, trailed distantly by Kiran, set out from Verhmina. The path ahead stretched toward Balaydra, an uncertain journey awaiting them.

To be continued…

Hiya everybody! Are we excited to "see" Balaydra?! I know I'm excited to introduce it to you all 😆 And what about Dimenika? Spur of the moment character (and her name too, came up with it myself 😎) but I figured it'd be fair to let the Ice fairies have some rep since the Earth fairies did (ie. Rowan)

Anyway, hope you all enjoyed the chapter and let me know your fan theories! What's gonna happen on this trip to Balaydra? 😉 Until next time, my lovely readers 💝
