Tetra - The Beginning

Chapter 14 - A Gravely Mistake

Chapter 14 - A Gravely Mistake

Mar 08, 2025

The lights were turned on and the people were aware of their real surroundings. The ceiling was draped over them like the sky and the distance there was a huge panel of windows with an edge of where the Glitchers were. There was a knocked down plastic silhouette with theater tape on some of the walls. Grant clapped his hands twice to get everyone's attention.

"This is just a  scratch from the surface of what you will be going through for the next couple of weeks, months, or even years." He paused and crossed his arms. "And to prepare for it, I will be talking about our enemy."  A holographic pad opened up and started rendering a presentation. Psst.....Psst…

A purple screen widened in front of the soldiers.

"There are FOUR main traits you seek to find a Glitcher."

The eyes in the air focused tighter on the important information.

"Number 1, Eyes of different colors."
The screen showed a set of heterochromia eyes.

"Number 2, the ability to go for weeks and months without food or water."
The screen showed a hamburger.

The fat kid, who threw all types of food at the projectors earlier, sulked. "I couldn't last for 3 hours without food!"  Then they took a bite out of cheerios again. Next to them was the dirty platinum blonde who acted as a corpse for the majority of the day.  Her name was Elinia Pawar. "Stop eating so much, Ovel." She took out the food from the kid's mouth, the drool still dangling. Elinia had a neutral opinion when it came to young children. She didn't think they were too pestering nor were they a blessing. Which was why she accepted a part time job to babysit the only child of the Presley family. The Pawar and the Presley family have sponsored each other since the beginning of time, which is why Elinia knew Ovel and knew that it was her job to keep their gluttonous desires at a minimum.

"Number 3, A glitchy aura."  The screen showed what the glitches looked like, horizontal lines with little bits of white, black, red, and blue.

"And lastly, god-like abilities."

The air filled with intrigue and fear.

"But have no fear. Because humans depend on their heart and brain to survive. However, Glitchers rely solely on their eyes to live."

Blake felt himself listening to the speech in a dark echo in the back of his head. His body still felt heavy and shaken and the pain in his leg and arm felt bothering. He shifted himself back and forth, but his energy couldn't keep up.

Grant closed the holographic presentation with a blink. "Now, Let me introduce you to your newly appointed mentor..." The clack of tall high heels tapped the floor in a rhythm.

Tip...Tap......Tip.....Tap

Long green hair flew behind the woman like a horse's pride. Her body was muscular, showcasing brilliant biceps and abs. She towered over Grant with her high heels, everyone in the room murmuring "Triangulo Servios." to greet the goddess.

"Your tests are pitiful and plain." She stated plainly, walking up to the newbie soldiers sitting on the bleachers. "Cowardness is not that hard to discover." She examined everyone from left to right, catching Darius's eyes. Darius frowned.  Darlyn??  Darius was surprised to feel that time zapped across faster than light. He knew she was in the army, but he didn't expect to meet her this fast. It had been 2 years since they last talked or met. He avoided her gaze, trying not to panic so much. He held a grudge for a long time and somewhere in his gut told him that they had too many polarized views on the world.

Darlyn and Darius shared some physical traits, such as tan skin, green hair, and similar-looking eyes. However, despite these similarities, their personalities and facial structures were distinct and differed from each other. She had a mole on the left side of her face below her chin. Darius's eyes burned gold, while in contrast Darlyn's eyes were icy piercing blue. She had two gold pins on her uniform while Darius had zero. "Hello there. I'm Darlyn Gomez, and I'm the first in command Sergeant for this year's Gamma  selection." There were no falters, no insecurities in her way of talking. "Welcome to war."

It was just a cold hard truth.

"60% of you will die, 30% of you will give up or fail, and 10% of you will make it out alive at the end."  Darlyn stared straight into the audience's eyes. "The suits you are now wearing are the key to your ability to kill Glitchers." The holographic presentation started up.

Darlyn was not a loud and presentable speaker like Grant. She had a prim and proper soft voice that articulated every word.

She talked about the three fundamental parts of the suit. The first component was the black titanium zentai suit. Covering the whole human's body up to the neck, it caters itself to the person's body shape no matter how big or small the person is. It absorbs shock waves, impacts, and is partially fireproof.

The second component was the steel armor on all vulnerable parts of the body. Vulnerable as in, the head, shoulders, chest, back, and thighs. The steel armor can easily reflect bullets without harming the user. It is optional to wear a helmet because of how heavy it is, but it is preferable.

Thirdly, the Anti Gravitational Device(AGD). The AGD is centered in the middle of their steel armor on their chest, imposing a pink triangle. When pressed, the pink triangle lights up and removes the gravity around the user, giving them the ability to fly and maneuver through the air. The AGD is connected to the remote device on the small tablet on the titanium suit. The tablet is connected to the helmet which can receive messages from a higher up.

"The AGD is hard to use and requires training." Darlyn explained. "It takes balance, core strength, and flexibility while hoisting up 20 pounds of steel armor on your body." People nodded to each other.

Several experienced soldiers were watching the event, including Elinia, Pele, and others. "Is there anybody experienced, who would like to showcase their skills?" Darlyn asked the soldiers. Around twelve people raised their hands, Darius desperately avoiding eye contact.
Darlyn stared at Darius like she was expecting something of him.
A few seconds passed, and she turned her back in irritation. "Darius, why don't you show us what you got?" Amber needed to take a deep breath from that boring presentation. Breathe in....breathe out , She repeated it in her head over and over again until she was calm. She walked out of the bleachers, and went back to her dorm. She sunk into her bed in thought.

In this world, the amount of colors you see, determines your rank. Blake is in the lowest rank of society--- “Mono”, seeing the world in black and white. His goal is to release the colors to this grayscale world, and create an equal society for all.

This is the first book in the trilogy.
