Diamond in the rough

Chapter 02

Chapter 02

Mar 13, 2025

In the middle of the cluttered living room, Suno held a faded photograph between gloved fingers. The woman in the picture stood proudly in front of a primary school, her smile bright and hopeful. Beneath it, the words ‘New Teacher’ were scrawled in neat handwriting.

“Another dead end,” Suno muttered, tossing the photo onto the growing pile of evidence.

Nearby, a wiry detective with a perpetual frown shrugged, rifling through a drawer. “Nothing here points to a killer. No signs of struggle, no forced entry. It’s like the crime didn’t even happen here.”

Suno’s jaw tightened, his lips pressing into a thin line. “That doesn’t make sense. She didn’t just drop dead in her own living room for no reason.”

The other detective sighed, closing the drawer with a sharp click. “Maybe the killer cleaned up after themselves. Or maybe we’re missing something.”

Before the conversation could continue, the front door creaked open, and Jisung stepped inside, his sharp eyes scanning the room. “What’s the progress?” he asked, his tone calm but authoritative.

Suno’s head snapped up, his expression twisting into one of barely concealed disgust. “What are you doing here?” he spat, his voice low and venomous, his nostrils flaring as he took a step forward.

Jisung didn’t flinch, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp. “The station chief ordered me to join you. Maybe he thought you needed the best detective on the case.”

The room seemed to grow colder as Suno’s hands clenched into fists, his knuckles whitening. “Listen here, pretty boy,” he hissed, his voice dripping with disdain. “This is MY CASE. You stay out of it. Go do your little tasks before you regret sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

Without missing a beat, Jisung reached for the case file in the other detective’s hand, his gaze steady but intense. The detective holding the file hesitated, his eyes darting nervously between the two, but Suno was faster -as always-. He snatched the file away, clutching it tightly against his chest, his lips curling into a sneer.

“I won’t even allow you to know the victim’s name,” Suno snapped, his voice cold and final, his chest rising and falling with barely contained anger.

For a moment, Jisung stood there, his expression unreadable but his jaw tightening slightly. Then, with a slight shake of his head and a faint, almost imperceptible sigh, he turned and walked away, his shoulders stiff but his steps deliberate. He wasn’t about to waste energy on Suno’s petty grudges, there was work to be done, and he knew Suno well enough to know when to walk away.

“So, Jisung, when are you going to get your punishment?” Suno asked, a mischievous glint dancing in his sharp eyes.

Jisung raised his eyebrow as he stood, shedding his gloves after collecting evidence from the crime scene. “What are you talking about, Suno?” he asked, attempting to mask his awareness.

Suno’s grin widened, his fox-like features oozing amusement. “Oh, don’t play dumb. You know exactly what I mean.” He stepped closer, lowering his voice but not his taunting tone. “It’s time for your punishment.”

Jisung sighed heavily, the sound carrying both resignation and irritation. “Punishment,” he muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes. Why did I even agree to that ridiculous game in the first place?

The memory of that night loomed large, and before he could stop it, the events came rushing back like a wave crashing against a fragile shore.

In one of the clubs where the detectives from the police station used to meet to entertain themselves or celebrate a new person who joined the police station. Jisung sat in the circle between two people whose names he didn't know, or rather, he didn't know all of their names except for one, Beta Sunwoo, who sat opposite him. He was the one who organised this evening as well. Although Jisung didn't belong to this kind of place or atmosphere, but he still accepted the invitation because he probably thought of starting to do new things -he wasn't used to doing before- in his new workplace in order to change himself.

“Relax, Jisung,” someone had nudged him playfully. “You look like you’re being interrogated instead of joining a party.”

He forced a smile, though it felt awkward and unconvincing. ‘Maybe this was a mistake,’ he thought, glancing at the exit. ‘I should’ve just stayed home.’

After doing all the rituals they're used to do in the club, Jisung barely understood, the group had coerced him into participating in a game of ‘Truth or Dare’. He’d hesitated, but the collective cheer of encouragement left him little room to refuse.

“Come on, newbie! Don’t be a buzzkill!”

The turns passed, each one accompanied by uproarious laughter and wild dares which most likely was either kissing a stranger or doing something crazy. Jisung remained on edge, his mind calculating every possible scenario. When his turn came, he opted for the safer choice Truth.

He should’ve known better.

Suno’s eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Alright, Jisung,” he began, his grin widening. “When you're performing oral on someone, do you enjoy going all the way down your throat, gagging on the dick, and choking on every thrust?”

The question hit Jisung like a punch to the gut. His cheeks flamed, and his throat tightened as every pair of eyes zeroed in on him, waiting with bated breath for his answer.

‘Why me? Why that question?’ Panic surged within him, followed by a deep, overwhelming discomfort. The omega had never been one to discuss such personal matters, and the thought of doing so in front of his raucous coworkers filled him with dread.

“Come on, Jisung, spill the beans, don’t be shy! We’re all friends here.” Suno urged, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

“I-I’m not answering that,” he stammered, his voice barely audible over the laughter that erupted around him.

Jisung’s hand darted toward a bottle of alcohol, his escape plan obvious or ready to drown his embarrassment. But Suno was quicker. He snatched it away before Jisung could take a sip, leaving him blinking in stunned frustration.

“Nice try.” Suno said smugly. “But who said drinking gets you out of this? This is not your punishment. Ohh no, I’ve got something much better in mind.”

Jisung swallowed hard, his mind racing with possibilities. Knowing his new colleagues, ‘the punishment’ was bound to be something far worse than simply getting drunk.

“Let’s just say this punishment will bring you... out of your comfort zone,” he said, dragging out the last words with a teasing lilt.

“Huh?” Jisung stiffened, his mind racing. ‘Out of my comfort zone?’ What’s that supposed to mean? He glanced around the circle, noticing some of the others exchanging amused glances. A few even chuckled quietly as if they already knew something he didn’t.

“You’re going to love this one, Jisung,” Suno added, his tone dripping with mock sweetness.

‘Why do I feel like I’m walking into a trap?’ Jisung thought, the anxiety twisting in his gut.

Suno’s gaze dropped deliberately to Jisung’s private area, his smirk turning predatory. “Come on, you’re a smart detective. Aren’t you?”

At that moment, realization hit Jisung like a freight train. His stomach dropped. “I’m not doing that!” he snapped, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and panic.

“We’ll see about that,” Suno said smoothly, leaning back with a smug look on his face.
