A mysterious, black-robed man sits in a gargantuan temple with other robed men. They all have their faces covered in cloth while multiple mutter prayers. After the prayers, one of them speaks,
"Pupils, as the leader of the Sendainist Cult, I celebrate this Cult's 100th year, waiting for the arrival of our God, the Sedainoshi, Akane Yukashika. The reaper of the Okina, the king of all generations. The true and most divine syneji artist in the history of our world. Our God has shown throughout history that he cannot be killed and is merely in a slumber. We wait for our day of reckoning, and we can only show our repentance to God so that he will give us mercy in his imminent awakening."
The members of the church begin clapping, their voices being heard across the pews. The leader picks up a mysterious box and holds it up in front of the crowd.
"This relic will be for him when he returns, his gift for his doings."
Day 98 Tokyo Regiment Academy 12:54 pm
Zenatori begins walking down the hallway heading to Mashaka's classroom, and he monologues to himself,
"I've already come to terms with the fact that this is simply how my life will be. I have no drive to become a person inspired by others, and I have no drive to become a person who represents who I truly am. I want to make excuses for my inability to change, but even if I had everything I wanted, would I suddenly grow a desire to become the best version of myself? No, even in the fantastical scenario in which I felt the warmth of humans, the same scenario in which I felt the appreciation of someone else, I still would be the same person I am by nature: the horrible, sorry loser who can't change. That is why I gave up on trying to love someone, for no one could ever love me. Even if I loved someone and it was mutual, it would only get taken away from me, like it always does. Or I will end up screwing up like I always do."
Yachi runs toward Zenatori, yelling,
"Sakatoro-kun!"
"What is it?"
"Nothing."
"Then why did you yell my name?"
"I just want to be beside you."
Zenatori slid the doors to the classroom open and thought,
"Sometimes I wonder why Yachi still talks to me. I can only wonder what she finds so interesting about me. But, I admit I enjoy her company."
Chatter is in the classroom. As Zenatori looks around, he sees Akari.
"Are we continuing training tomorrow?" said Akari.
"Of course," said Zenatori.
A random first-year student comes up to Zenatori and says,
"You did pretty well in that exam, dude."
"Thanks, I guess. Who are you?"
"Oh, you obviously don't know my name. I'm Aoi Iwasaki."
"Nice to meet you."
Iwasaki leans forward to Zenatori and whispers in his ear,
"Keep it real, man. If you had to pick between the two, who would it be?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Akari or Yachi."
Zenatori ponders for a few seconds.
"Honestly, I think Akari looks better, but I like Yachi's personality more."
Iwasaki starts tearing up,
"I knew you were my bro. We have the same Syneji and preferences, it's like we were meant to be. I've awaited your arrival, long lost brother."
"Alright, don't get too ahead of yourself now."
Akari says,
"Zenatori finally made his first friend."
Zenatori thought
"Is that what this looks like? Is this who you would call a friend?"
--- An Hour Later ---
After class concludes, Zenatori walks out with his hands in his pockets as usual. Suddenly, he's stopped by a girl, and she says,
"Um, is your name Zenatori-kun?"
"Yes."
"Uh, well- would you come to the library with me?"
"For what?"
"Well, I see you in the library a lot and maybe you might be interested in some books from me."
"I'm kinda busy. Can you ask me tomorrow?"
"S- Sure!"
Zenatori instantly thought,
"Wait a minute, does she like me? Why else would she invite me to the library? Jeez, I hate the way I think. I always assume a cute girl showing me the slightest bit of kindness likes me, and it's super annoying. I need to think of proper thoughts."
A World on the Brink is an epic narrative full of high-stakes battles, deep emotional struggles, and the exploration of the human condition through the lens of supernatural power. Zenatori’s journey from an ordinary high school student to a powerful Syneji Artist is filled with moments of triumph, heartbreak, and profound realizations about the world and his place in it. As Zenatori continues to confront ever-stronger enemies and the mysteries of the Syneji, the fate of the world—and his own soul—hangs in the balance.
