That night, Mira couldn't sleep.
She lay curled on her side, Solana tucked in the crook of her arm, warm and twitching lightly with toddler dreams. Outside, the wind moved through the leaves like someone whispering a secret just out of reach.
She should've told someone about the door. Her aunt. A friend. Anyone.
But every time she imagined saying it aloud, the words fell apart in her throat. Because how could she explain a door that wasn't there a moment before — and then wasn't there again?
How could she explain knowing it was meant for her?
And the most impossible thing of all: Solana's voice.
Mama... open.
Mira couldn't stop replaying it. The soft, clear sound of it — so certain, so real. Like Solana had been waiting for that moment all along. Like she knew.
The house creaked once, then twice.
Then silence again.
But Mira's ears were tuned to something else now. A layer underneath the silence.
And that's when she heard it.
Just barely — like a thread being pulled through fabric.
The song.
Not loud. Not clear. But there.
Like someone humming into the spine of a dream.
She held her breath.
Solana stirred, shifted, and curled in tighter. But her eyes fluttered open.
And without looking, she whispered, "There."
Mira blinked.
"There where, baby?"
Solana didn't answer. She just pointed.
Toward the wall.
Not the window. Not the hallway.
The wall.
And Mira saw it — only for a second — a faint shimmer, just like before. Like the air had bent inward. Like a door might appear if she stared long enough.
She rose, careful not to wake Solana. The baby whimpered a little but didn't cry. Mira kissed her forehead and padded toward the wall.
Nothing.
No knob. No crack. No wood.
But the humming grew louder.
And when she laid her hand flat against the wall, something happened.
A warmth passed through her palm — not from the wall, but into it.
Like the wall had taken something from her. Or... accepted something.
The humming stopped.
And she heard a voice.
Low. Familiar.
"Not yet. But soon."
She stumbled back, her heart hammering.
But when she turned to check on Solana—
She found her sitting upright.
Eyes wide.
Smiling softly.
And singing.
