DepTen; When A Depressed Guy Gets Reincarnated in Another World

Learning Swordsmanship

Learning Swordsmanship

Apr 21, 2025

Heit, Ha, Hua!
Even this late in the morning, that's all I could hear.
The deafening grunts and shouts of Reiss as he practices his swordmanship.
For fucks sake, it's almost noon.
Ha--
Anyways, it's been two and a half years since Sylpha came to our house to become our maid.
She's helped Lize, my 'mom' in this other world, a ton with household chores, like cleaning and cooking, that Lize's had a so much free time, she took up a job as a guard of the village.
Turns out, she was an adventurer, a mage, and was with a party of six people, including Reiss.
She said that that was how they met.
To be honest, Lize is being more of a proper 'mom' than my previous mom.
Unlike her,

Now, some new things about me.
I am finally able to perform Sage class magic.
After not only learning more spells, but performing an indept study on magic, I've discovered many things.
Magic, is bounded by some rules.
Like I said before, you can perform a spell just by having a clear image in your head.
However, it seems that that only works up to Expert class, which is part of what made my moving up to Sage class take so long.

For magic from Sage class and above, you need to set som boundaries in order to use it.
For example, 'Flame Spire', a Sage class spell, as the name suggests, creates a pillar of flame.
However, merely imagining a 'tall pillar of flame' won't set the magic off, or if it does, will make a extremely weak imitation.
You need to understand what allows for the creation of said 'tall pillar of flame'.
Like an actual pillar, you need to make a foundation, and put up supports.
For this, you need to use a lot more mana than the strongest expert class spells.
You need to set a 'foundation' and 'supports' out of pure mana, that will also serve as the flames 'fuse'.
How you shape the foundation and supports will also shape the flame itself.
If you shaped it like a rectangular box, you will get a rectangular flame 'pillar'.
However, for other spells such as 'Storm Gale', which summons an extremely strong wind, rain, and hail, having characteristics of both a 'gale' and a 'storm, the rules will be different.
And yes, I know that 'storm' and 'gale' are almost the same, blame the one who named the spell...
Anyways, since it is a spell that combines both water and air elements, you need to set your mana to sustain both.

And speaking of elements, it seems that the four elements mentioned by the magic book I have aren't the only 'elements'.
While they are the 'main elements', you can make practically anything such as wood or steel as long as you have enough mana.
You can also use it to manipulate wordly concepts, such as light, dark, and I assume time and space, however, I don't have enough mana and the proper facilities to test that out.
I almost burned down a nearby forest just testing out my newly learned Sage Class magic...
Basically, the most fundamental thing I learned about magic, is that it's more like the manipulation of mana to 'create', whether it be an physical object, or a concept such as light, temperature, and physics.

Anyways, I've been explaining for a while, yet this man is still practicing outside!
He woke up earlier than me to practice, I woke up before the sun even rose, and it's almost noon now!
The hell is up with his stamina?
Is he secretely some sort of monster or something?
Walking up to the window, I continue to observe him.
Upon closer look, he isn't just randomly swinging his sword around.
Using his offhand with no weapon, he punches, or moves the 'arm' of his supposed enemy.
And with his dominant hand with the sword, he slashes in way that can set him up for a counter in case he misses or if he gets blocked.
I then proceed to watch him for a about an hour.

Around 1 hour later

"Reiss, you're still practicing even though it's already midday?"
Lize asks after she got home from work.
Reiss then looks up, to see that the sun is already in it's peak.
"Oh, you're right, I just got a bit focused on practicing is all, Since I have nothing to do today, Today's not my shift to guard after all."
Lize then looks at him with an annoyed look.
" 'Have nothing to do', what about looking after our children?"
Reiss then fakes a laugh, before scratching the back of his head and looking down.
Reiss is so awkward sometimes.

I then feel someone tap on my shoulder.
"Miss Lilinet, I have finished cooking already, so may you wait at the dining table? I will also head to your sisters, and tell your parents."
As I turn, I see that it was Sylpha.
"Oh, uhm, sure."
I then head to the dining table, like what Sylpha told me to do.
Something new about our family is that I now have a younger sister.
Some time after Sylpha's arrival, Reiss and Lize wanted another child, and after a couple of weeks of 'trying',  Lize get pregnant, and she had birth to Lilith, just four months before I turned three.

As I sit down, patiently waiting for the others waiting to join, I had a thought.
I hadn't been able to improve so much in magic anymore, since I couldn't possibly use Sage magic anywhere near here, so what if I improved on something else?
And as I had that thought, I suddenly heard the footsteps of Lilia, Lilith and Sylpha making their way down, as well as Lize's bickering at Reiss.
As Reiss sat down with Lize and the others, I suddenly asked him a question.
"Father, could you please teach me swordsmanship?"
Taken aback, he replies with a bemused look.
"I mean, that's fine with me, but, you're still young and you can get hurt, you know?"
I reply with a calm demeanor, maybe slightly tired and bored, from sitting all day because I'm unable to continue learning anymore magic.
"Me being young is the very reason I want to learn now, the earlier I start, the earlier I master it, and I'm not afraid of getting hurt."

Lize then clears her throat slightly, and nudges her head to Sylpha carrying the food to the table.
"Maybe you guys can talk about that after we eat?"
Reiss then shifts in his seat, and moves his head in a way as if he's signaling me to get some of the food.
I then reach over, and put some of the food on my plate.
It was some sort of stew with some beef, carrots, potatoes, some tomato dissolved into the stew, and some seasoning.
And yet, despite the simplicity of the ingredients, Sylpha made it more delicious than most modern food I tasted in my previous world.
I then look to my left, and I see Lilia gushing over the food.
"As usual Sylpha, the food you made is delicious!"
She then continues eating it with such enthusiasm, with Sylpha smiling due to her remark.

A couple of minutes later...

After eating, Reiss then goes outside, picking his wooden sword which looks like he carved  it himself.
He then proceeds to resume practicing, making his usual loud grunts and shouts.
I then follow him outside soon after, I just had to wash my plate beforehand, which took a long time since Sylpha insisted that she should do it.
Of course, I eventually convinced her, but that took quite a long time.
I then take a good look at our front yard.
It was an open area, with low lying stone walls surrounding it, just a little shorter than me.
It also had a small flower garden with some trees at one side, and the other side was where Sylpha hanged our laundry.
We also had a wooden gate that lead to a dirt path, which I noticed dropped at the sides.
As I peaked out the gate, I noticed we actually lied on an elevated area, and the stone walls actually dropped to the ground, which was about one and a half meters down.
As I turned, I noticed that Reiss was actually looking at me as he practiced, probably concerned that I might fall and such.

He then stopped for a second, and asked me a question.
"Wanna start practicing now?"
"Oh, uh...Sure."
Why did I make it sound like I was so unsure?
Reiss then threw me a smaller wooden sword, which was thin, and one handed, like a rapier.
"How about we start off by having a little light sparring just to test out how good you are?"
He asked with a smile, seems like he's been eager to spar someone for a while now.
I hope he doesn't forget that this is supposed to be a 'light' sparring session.
He then grips his sword fimrly, before dashing towards me, swinging his sword from above.
I quickly dodge by jumping to the side, and Reiss stops his sword right before hitting the ground.
"Almost broke my sword there."
He says, with an awkward chuckle right after.
He then stands up firmly, bending his knees and taking a wide stance.
He seems to be focusing more on core strength and stability and less on speed.
But still, he's pretty fast.
He then lunges himself at me, and slasehes at me three times horizontally, all of which I barely dodge.

I then lightly plant my right foot on the ground, before bending my knee to jump towards Reiss, unleashing a barrage of thrusts, all of which he blocks with ease.
He then spins, and slashes at me using his spinning momentum, whilst I was still in the air.
I couldn't dodge, so I blocked it, but I still flew a bit, and fell on the ground, with my hand gripping the sword feeling a little numb.
Yep, he forgot that this was supposed to be a light spar.
I then quickly stood up, before taking my stance, standing tall, bending my knees slightly.
I couldn't hope to overpower him, so I have to overwhelm him with speed.
I then jump towards him, feinting a thrust, before slipping his guard to lunge my sword at his throat.
He then quickly redirects my sword, and I land behind him.
As he turns, I threw another thrust at him, aiming for his kneecap.
I was already panting at this point, my legs felt weak, and my arms were heavy from exhaustion.
He then pulled his leg back, and kicked me in the stomach, sending me flying.

Great, I got kicked in the gut.
I struggled to breathe, and held my stomach in pain, and Reiss ran towards me.
"Are you okay Lilinet? Sorry, I got a little too into it."
I then stood up, still in excruciating pain.
"I'm alright, I just need to let the pain dissipate for  a bit."
I say with the fakest smile in the world, clearly in pain.

A couple of minutes later...

"Sorry for earlier..."
Reiss said looking a little ashamed.
I mean, of course, he did kinda kick his daughter in the stomach.
"It's fine father, I know that you were a bit into it, not having someone to fight for a while now."
Reiss then looked a bit shocked that I knew that.
"How did you know that?"
"Just an assumption."
Reiss then sighs, and smiles as he looks away.
"You know, with your skills, you could already be in the Expert class."
It seems that swordsmanship is classified the same way as magic.
"Is that impressive?"
"Of course it is, most kids your age, even the boys, would even struggle to be in the Beginner class."
...
"What about in magic, how impressive is being in Expert class there?"
"From what I know, most kids your age don't even know how to use magic. Me personally, I'm still in Novice, but that's because I don't practice magic much, and only use a little for daily convenience, not for fighting."
If only Reiss knew what class I was in.
"What about you father, what class are you in as a swordsman?"
"I'm a Master class swordsman."
He said with a smug face.
Alright, alright, I'm proud of you Reiss.
I then stand up, and look at Reiss.
"Let's continue practicing father."
"What about continuing tomorrow, you were pretty beat up today. You should get some rest."

I then follow as Reiss said, and went up to my room to go rest.
Reiss is a pretty awesome swordsman, I doubt he even used half of his strength on me.
I then lay down on the bed, looking up, staring at the roof.
I'm actually pretty amazing too though, being way ahead in comparison to kids my age.
I then started to close my eyes, and I eventually fell asleep.
