Stone Flower

Chapter 1: Saviour

Chapter 1: Saviour

Apr 22, 2025

"The Guild of Vails announced their disbandment 10 years ago after 'The Battle of the Crossroads', sparking a chain of events centered around infighting within the guild, affecting the western side of Somnus. Most of Vails prominent members went their own ways. The majority of the lower division members joined Quarry, led by the famed Ernest Winslow, who was known for rallying the bravest in times of need. " And that class, ends our quick review; all of you are dismissed," stated Professor Sam, a dedicated Historian, as he closed an old book, engraved with intricate decorations,  titled: "The History of Somnus". Though, he quickly added; "Also, class, our next session will be on 'The Sons of Salve,' so study up on it," Professor Sam said sternly, adjusting his glasses at the same time.

The school bell rang through the halls, piercing the ears of drowsy students who haven't gotten a wink sleep. As the students groaned and awoke, some started to put their belongings away. But suddenly, they hear an ear-deafening boom of a giant explosion, capable of shaking heaven itself, ringing through the entire city, everyone in the classroom turned to the window to see the remains of an old watch tower crumbling.

     A few moments later a live report of the incident was being broadcasted to every holoscreen in Somnus;
"- We have a live feed here currently, not much can be said folks but what we do know is that there was a high power explosion set off in the old watch tower." stated by a news reporter named Gale written on the screen. As everyone in the city of Somnus, at home, in the pub, even in offices; watch as the remains of the once lofty tower falls in waves of rubble.
"The tower is collapsing everyone! But there's some people still underneath!" shouted Gale in a panic, shaking the camera man; with the feed getting panned left and right to film the debris falling as far as the eye could see. As a giant piece of the tower was about to crush a child frozen in fear, a large imposing man in gilded armor wielding a battle hammer almost equal to his size, appeared in the blink of an eye. He set his foot firmly in the ground, swinging the hammer almost weightlessly, hitting the rubble and pulverizing it into little pebbles.

Like magic, he released the hammer from his grip, though it didn't fall; rather it started levitating. He then did a swift motion with his hand and it started spinning rapidly like an airplane propeller, and then it disappeared out of thin air as a burst of light where the hammer once was. He then picked up the kid and tossed him to a nearby Imperium guard, "Get him to safety!" said hurriedly by the man, as he rushes to save a few other people. They were close together, and as all of them were cornered by the surrounding rubble, a large portion of the roof was falling right at them.

"Is that-.. IT IS!" screamed the news reporter, but is more akin to a fanboy at this moment.

The people were preparing for impact, all huddled in fear, one was even crying, but the man used himself as a shield without a second thought. He turned his back and braced for the impact. The roof crashes and crumbles on his back; protecting all of them. As the dust started to clear, passerby's stared as Quarry's most powerful member emerged from the debris, with the people he saved embracing him in pure relief and gratefulness. Applaud erupted from the crowd as he made what could've been a tragedy, into merely another story in the long list of his accolades.

Favian Kalis was his name, a towering man at a height of 7'8 feet, well built and brawny, with equally sizable armor, gilded with silver and gold. Pauldrons engraved with the emblem of the "Flan Royal Family", and an over sized gorget that seems like it's merely there for aesthetics. Sometimes he's even confused to be a part of the church's paladins because of his use of holy magic. Though he underwent no formal blessing process, he was gifted with it at birth, almost like he was chosen by the Gods themselves; destined for greatness at the very start of his life.

"THERE, you have it folks! I thought we were gonna have to cut the feed for a minute there-.."
"Somnus's very own golden boy.. Favian!" reported excitedly by Gale, as a look of awe was slapped across his face.

The applaud kept coming, as more and more reporters came to the scene, they started to cut through the crowd to have a chance of interviewing him. He was quickly overwhelmed when they started hounding him with their own different questions. Reporters of all kinds, beast-folk, dwarves, humans, all trying to find out the scoop at the same time.

"How did you manage to get here before anyone else?!" shouted a dwarf, still managing to assert his presence even with his short stature.
"-Adding on to that, what were you doing before this all happened?!" added by a female reporter with deep eye-bags that seems to be running on 3 dark coffees a day.
"Why are you so handsome?!" exclaimed by another girl who's wearing merchandise of Favian, with a cap that has "~I love Favian~" written on it.

All of the formal reporters then slowly turned their heads towards the fangirl, and then slowly turned their heads back to Favian.

     "When, Where, What, Why, How?!"
"That's what you hear here right now folks, always make sure to tune in to channel 47, GMS - Good Morning Somnus! We're always first to that story, and so now let's cut to our very own Renei who's in that crowd right now trying to get to our golden boy. This is Gale Gillsen signing off-" added by the fanboy reporter.

Though, before Favian could utter a word, a quick burst of purple light appeared right in front of him. It was a woman that seemingly teleported to the scene, "All right everyone! He can only make a brief statement for the time being!" stated by the woman, wearing an all white dress, adorned with gold accessories, though the most prominent is two large gold rings that wrap around her wrists.

"Bu-!" one of the reporters' yelled but was quickly shut up by her.
"Uhp-uhp-puhp!" putting her index finger on the reporters' mouth.

She then went closer to Favian, and tip-toed to reach his ear, though he still needed to lean downward. In an annoyed tone she whispered, "You and your crowds.. Ernest was looking for you earlier this morning!". After that he exchanged a nervous smile to that angry woman. Punching his back, signaling him to say something, but again he was cut off by the grateful mother of the child he saved.
"Oh thank you Favian, you saved my son!" whilst in tears, said the mother; as she shook his hand.
"All of you are welcome! However I should be the one to thank you, citizens of Somnus for giving me the opportunity to serve you. Though I was merely doing my duty as one of the defenders of this great city." exclaimed Favian, and it quickly followed a loud applause from the crowd.

And as the crowd of people slowly began to dissipate, another Imperium guard hurriedly approached Favian and the woman, carrying a piece of dusty rubble. "Sir Favian, we have discovered fragments of an explosive device that may have been used to demolish the tower. It is gilded with silver, and it looks like there's some writing on it but it's undecipherable."

The sun reflecting off from the metal, glimmering in his eyes, recognizing that style of tinkering, Favian seemed to have made up his mind about something.
"Thank you, but I will personally handle this situation, you are dismissed." He responded with a rather concerned tone. "Alright, Sir Favian, I wish you good luck." the guard remarked, tipping his hat and walking away.

"You don't think it really could be.. him?" remarked the woman.

The woman, is Quarry's messenger and reconnaissance specialist, named Abella Plaqart. Standing at a height of 5'7, psychically she isn't as strong as the others, though she makes up for her unique innate ability. Her ability makes her able to teleport to anywhere within a 20 km radius from her position, the drawback to this is that she doesn't have control of where she ends up. To aid this, she imbues small talismans with her power by flowing her mana into it, and then gives it to each and every member of the guild to keep tabs on everyone. These talismans emit a constant flow of mana that she can focus on to and teleport to the location she wants to. Essentially making a personal transport system that covers the whole city.

     "It might be.." Favian responded.
"I'll head over to the guild right now, I'll meet you there." said Abella, as she raises both of her hands to do two quick handsigns to active her ability. A ring gesture by joining the thumb and index finger in a circle, and holding the other fingers relaxed away from the palm. She closes her eyes and focuses on the energy, followed by a quick clap of her hands. She then teleports away, Favian follows along to get to the guild, though he has to go through a crowded area to get there fast enough...

[Somnus City Market]

Favian keeps a certain look on his face as he walks through the city market, with passerby's recognizing him. A stark look of someone deep in thought, he doesn't even give any attention to the people looking at him in awe. His towering figure even shocks some of the shopkeepers there; "What a man!" shouts an old wrinkly granny, who's adorned with all kinds of rings and bracelets.

His continuous train of thought was cut short though because without even noticing, he has already arrived at the prestigious "Guild of Quarry". As he stepped foot he was greeted by the whole guild with cheers and smiling faces.

Ernest Winslow, the Guildmaster of Quarry, approaches him with open arms, you'd think there wouldn't be someone taller than Favian. But there was, and it was the guildmaster. Standing at a towering 8'1, he makes Favian look like his grandson, though their relationship is quite like that too.

"Favian! BAHAHAHA! you really showed off in the news again!" Ernest said, whilst embracing the boy.
"Good thing I sent Abella to keep those pesky reporters out of your hair, BAHAHAHHA!" Each laugh was like an earthquake to the guild members present. His pure willpower is enough to knock some people out just by standing near him, laughing made him lose focus in keeping his energy in check.

Abella jumps to tap Ernest on the shoulder, and again tiptoes to be able to reach Ernest's ear, which leads to him needing to lean down to reach her. She whispers something, and promptly, Ernest says to all the guild members, "I'm sure Favian has got his fair share of praise, but I have to borrow him for a little while in my office." whilst patting Favian's back.
The members all looked confused, though they went back to what they were doing before, and didn't think much of it. As the three of them walked through the hall and went up a staircase, there was one thing that can be made sure of: all of them are stressed out of their minds.

The discussion was long and mentally tolling, but the decision was made, Favian will get on one of the guilds' airships to venture to the "Somnus Penitentiary". With an impatient look on his face, He gets on. These airships are gigantic, with one large balloon anchored to a wooden ship, and engines powered by engraved fire magic that help steer it. One of the most noticeable details was these fin-like wings on the bottom of the hull, that can be flapped to further aid in increasing the mobility. These airships share a similar design to sea-faring ships as well. Instead of the unknown ocean, these behemoths sail through the skies.

Favian arrives without issue, with the airship landing in the docking area of the penitentiary, he steps foot to one of many sea prisons of the country. He walks in the building to see a wide open room with one guard behind a desk. There was seemingly no doors in the facility, only blank walls and two hallways to the left and right of the desk.
As he approached the prison guard at the front desk, a batch of new inmates bound by iron shackles that's connected to each and every one of them, with several Imperium officers armed with gilded rifles follows through the gate, making sure none of them tries escaping. Some of the prisoners are even held in cages, monstrous and grotesque, with the sound of rusty old wheels echoing through the halls. The cages are chained to all the other prisoners, as they're forced to pull these beasts as they do a death march to certain despair.
Walking into the penitentiary felt like a dreadful weight on your back, the dark and decrepit building, fortified with several layers of concrete and rebar. Cut off from the mainland, the only way to travel there was through airship or boat. It almost seemed like there was always dark looming clouds over it, covering the only rays of sunshine that reaches any poor soul that's to be held there. Only to lay rotten, beneath thousands of feet of ocean and earth.

"I am looking for prisoner 781," Favian said, going closer.
"It's a surprise to see you here, golden boy." with a light smirk he remarked; "So you're lookin for Ol' seven eight one huh?" The guard pretends to say like he's on to something, he then proceeded to check below his desk, rummaging through crumpled papers and books. He lets out a little whistle when he found what he was looking for, and then slowly proceeded to flip through the pages of a large weathered log book.
"Says here that prisoner 781 cell is at undersea floor 8, Another guard will escort you there shortly." the guard exclaimed. He then reaches for a button and presses it. The guard mutters something into a radio, and then immediately after, a red light followed by a loud buzzing noise grabbed Favian's attention. An elevator that he didn't seem to notice that was even there slowly opens, with a few guards walking out and signing him to come in. The elevator, lit only by two gas lamps, with a guard that's stationed to pull a lever all day.
These elevators are the only practical way to go deeper inside the penitentiary, god forbid someone who'll try to by foot using staircases. Any man is foolish to attempt it, as the prison constantly changes the arrangements of entrances and exits. The mystery on how this prison keeps altering is a well-kept secret of the guards.
"Thank you." Favian says to the guard sitting in the front desk.
As he was led to the elevator, he began to collect his thoughts.
"He'd never wanted to be caught, so why hasn't he escaped yet? unless . . . He wants to be here."

In a world dominated by mercenary guilds and where monsters rule. Stone Flower is a story of a young man named Mason Porter wielding the power of an egoist, bending reality through sheer will alone. But when he enters the largest capital Somnus, his quest to become the strongest uncovers a buried truth; the city thrives by leashing egoists like him.

Mason carries a relic that defies the city's control. A stone flower pendant, its petals etched with a dead civilization's runes. The pendant thrums with a constant resonance only parasites can taste. Every time its petals flicker, unseen shades stir. To Somnus, it's a key to untapped power. To Mason, it's the only clue to his past. And to the parasites, symbiotic horrors that fuse with egoists, offering monstrous strength in exchange for a sliver of their mind.

Embrace the parasite's power and risk becoming a puppet, or cling to his unyielding will and die a martyr. But the stone flower's pulse grows louder.

The parasites are circling.

Somnus doesn't just leash egoists, it breeds them.
