Ferris walked home after dropping off Wynona. There was a lot on his mind and he was beginning to regret offering to help her. However, he also knew that he had a better chance at getting to know June if he helped Wynona. After a few minutes of walking, Ferris arrived home. The sun was already setting, but he knew Nonna would not mind how late he was getting home. He unlocked the door and entered the house and saw her sitting on the couch, watching one of her tv dramas.
He closed the door and waved as he walked toward her, “Hey Nonna. Ready to eat? Or should I wait a little longer?” He teased.
“Go get your butt in this kitchen!” She joked.
Ferris laughed and quickly entered the kitchen. He rummaged through the cupboards and called out to her, "Do you want spaghetti or hamburgers?"
"You made hamburgers last time," She complained.
Ferris took out a large pot and turned back to her. "Spaghetti it is." He rummaged around pulling out all the ingredients he needed. Mostly everything he made was fresh except for the pasta itself. He started chopping and dicing all of his vegetables and as he did Nonna shuffled into the kitchen and sat at the island.
He glanced at her. "May I help you?"
She looked around the kitchen. "Is this going to take long?"
"Impatient much?" Ferris rolled his eyes and started working on making his sauce. "It'll take as long as it needs to."
Nonna laughed. "Focus on the cooking, Ferris."
Ferris laughed and started boiling a pot of water. "Hey, so I'm working on this project with a girl."
"Oh? What kind of project?" She asked.
"Um, well she needs me to write a song for her." Ferris turned away from her pretending to cut more vegetables.
"What?" Nonna sounded surprised. "That's amazing, Ferris!"
He nodded his head.
"Did you tell her about your stage fright?" She asked.
Ferris was quiet.
"Ferris! You need to tell her."
He turned back to her. "I know, I know and I will!"
"Ferris." She frowned.
Before he could make up an excuse his phone rang. He sighed with relief. Saved by the bell. He picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Hey can I come over?" It was Cole.
"Sure, we haven't eaten yet."
"Thanks." He sounded relieved. "I'll be there in a few minutes." He quickly hung up.
Nonna eyes Ferris carefully. "Who was that?"
Ferris was stirring the sauce. "It was Cole. He's coming over."
"Oh." She nodded her head. "Family troubles again?"
"Probably." Ferris glanced back at her.
By the time Cole arrived the food was ready. Nonna was already eating. Cole sat down beside her and served himself. Ferris chose to eat across from them in the kitchen standing. Cole had changed out of his uniform and came in wearing a blue t-shirt and black jeans.
"You're still in your uniform?" Cole asked.
Ferris looked down at himself, forgetting he had not changed. "Oh, yeah, I forgot to change when I came home. I just started cooking."
Cole nodded his head and shoved a handful of spaghetti into his mouth.
Nonna turned to him. "Are you spending the night?"
"If that's okay with you, yes." Cole grinned as if he were pleading with her.
She rolled her eyes and nodded her head. "I'll give you the blankets for the couch."
Cole wrapped his arms around her shoulders. "Thanks, Nonna, you're the best."
Ferris changed the subject slightly and asked, “What were your parents arguing about now?”
“Oh, you know school stuff. My dad wants to transfer me to a private school, but my mom thinks I’ll be better off where I’m at now. They were about to rope me in so I left. Now here I am!” He raised his arms in the air.
They spent the rest of the time eating quietly. Once everyone was done Ferris went to his room to change. Since he cooked he did not have to clean up, and Nonna did not want to so they had Cole do it for them even though he protested profusely.
While Ferris was in his room, Cole joined him. "You have any clothes I can sleep in?"
Ferris pointed at his drawers and fell on his bed.
Cole rummaged through Ferris' drawers for a while before pulling out some clothes. While he changed, Ferris's phone started to ring. Cole quickly answered, before Ferris could even reach for it.
"Hello?" He said as he pulled a pair of white sweats on.
"Hey, is Ferris there?" Ferris recognized that voice. It was their friend Aimee.
Cole pulled a black shirt over his head. "Yeah, he's here. What's up?"
"Nothing," Aimee said. "Was just wondering if you guys wanted to meet up at the park.
Ferris looked at Cole and shook his head. "I'll pass. I'm tired."
Cole shrugged his shoulders. "Sure, I'll go."
"Cool, I'll see you there. Bye."
"Bye, Aimee." Cole hung up and tossed the phone to Ferris. "I'll be back."
Ferris waved from his bed. "I'll probably be asleep by then. My keys are hanging on the rack."
Cole waved and left the room.
Ferris tried to wait up for Cole, but his bed was too comfortable and he fell asleep. At some point in the night Cole came back and instead of sleeping on the couch he was sleeping in Ferris' bed. Usually, Ferris would kick him out, but he was too tired to care. As he was falling back to sleep he received a message on his phone.
He groggily sat up and grabbed his phone. It was a phone number he did not recognize. He yawned, without reading the message he agreed to whatever the user sent him. He put the phone down and fell back onto his pillow and fell asleep.
Morning came and Ferris woke up to the sound of wind rushing by his window. His blinds were closed, as usual, but the sun was not shining at all. Confused, he threw himself out of bed and peeked through the blinds. The clouds were out, covering the sky like a blanket. He walked back to his desk and grabbed his phone. The phone number from the night before texted him again. It said:
Last Night
(989)-744-2250:
I’ll see you tomorrow then.
Today
(989)-744-2250:
It’s really cloudy...it might rain. How about we go to the diner? Just to work on the song.
When the person mentioned the song he knew it was Wynona, but it confused him that she assumed that he was just going to show up today. Then Ferris remembered his actions from last night. He had blindly agreed to something he did not want to do anymore which was meet up on Saturday instead of Monday. He thought of canceling on her at the last minute, but then he remembered the plan. Perhaps we could talk about June. He quickly added Wynona’s contact to his phone and responded.
Today
Me:
Yeah. I’ll bring my laptop and notebook. See you there.
Ferris quickly changed into a sleeveless white sweatshirt that had a green hoodie. He pulled on some khaki pants and his white shoes. He packed up his laptop and notebook in a black leather computer bag and left the room. He finished getting ready in the bathroom, remembering to put in his contacts.
As he walked out the door, he remembered Wynona's warning and grabbed an umbrella and his skateboard. He sent Nonna a text letting her know where he would be. Riding on his skateboard it only took fifteen minutes to arrive at the diner.
He sat down at the island, his skateboard under the table, and set up his laptop. Marvey did not work on the weekends, one of his employees did, so Ferris did not bother to make conversation. He was not sure what Wynona liked so he ordered two chocolate milkshakes, a burger with fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich. He waited a while before Wynona arrived.
She came in wearing a black jacket, a light blue scarf, white shorts, blue checkered shoes, and a black beanie. Ferris waved her down even though Wynona could very clearly see him in front of her. Wynona sat down beside Ferris and smiled smally.
Ferris motioned to the food. "I didn't know what you liked so just choose whatever you think you'll like."
Wynona hesitated before grabbing the grilled cheese. "Sorry about the last minute changes. Could we meet again Tuesday?"
Ferris nodded his head. "Sure. Do you want the shake?"
Wynona glanced at the extra shake and forced a smile. "Sorry, I don't like milkshakes."
"Oh…" Ferris felt like an idiot and nodded his head. "That's cool." Then it was quiet.
Wynona took a quick bite from her sandwich and quickly placed it down. "Should we start? I brought my iPad, it has a piano pad on it so it should be similar."
"That's fine." Ferris turned to his laptop and started looking through different files. He plugged in a pair of earbuds and handed one to Wynona. "Here are some of my finished songs." They both sat in silence listening to the different songs Ferris chose to show her.
Wynona took out the earbud and turned to Ferris. "These are good, and you have a very good voice, but I think we should work on something from scratch."
Ferris nodded his head and grabbed his notebook. "This is where I have all the unfinished works."
While Wynona flipped through the book, Ferris asked, "Does your sister like music?"
Wynona glanced at him. "Yeah, I guess."
Ferris nodded his head. "Cool."
"This is a good song." Wynona showed Ferris. It was his most recent song. The one he had worked on the morning before the first day.
Ferris bit his lip nervously. "I don't know, I've been stumped on that one for a while."
"Don't worry, I'll try to help you." Wynona smiled.
Ferris did not budge. "I thought you were bad at writing songs."
"Well, I'm not the best, but I can still help." Wynona looked at the notebook. "This song has a lot of potential, trust me."
Ferris was still unsure, but he nodded his head. "Okay…"
Wynona turned back to Ferris. "So this is a love song, right?"
"Yeah." Ferris nodded his head.
"That must mean this song is about someone, huh?" She asked.
Ferris felt his face flush. "What? No! This song isn't about anyone."
Wynona nodded her head and turned back to the notebook. "Well, it's easier for me to think of lyrics when I think of someone."
"Oh?" Ferris glanced at Wynona. "Does that mean you like someone?"
Wynona's face became a light shade of pink. "Uh, yeah, m-maybe."
Ferris chuckled. "That's cool. Who is it?"
Wynona's face flushed more. "You're crazy if you think I'm going to tell you."
"What?" Ferris laughed. "I won't tell anyone."
She shook her head. "Nice try. Let's just get to work."
Ferris frowned and looked at the notebook. It was hard to focus. He really wanted to know who it was. He figured the more time they spent together he would learn more about Wynona and June so he would find out soon enough
