A Long Drive & Hunger

A Long Drive & Hunger

May 09, 2025

Ryo quietly drove his car, making turns every once in a while. Slowly, the sun began falling down, and noon came.

Occasionally, he would stop, for verifying his identity while going from one Sector, to another.

"Identity, please." The man asked.

He had stopped in front of a laser-barrier. To his right, and the vehicle's, was a small cabin, inside which the man sat with the responsibility of identity-verification.

"Yes... Hold on..." Ryo quietly said, in a voice which could barely be heard as he rummaged through his belongings.

'Ugh... I just went through this thing back in Sector Four, it's only been a few hours... Where did I even keep it...' Ryo confusedly scoured his pockets, then moved on to the cabinet right next to his seat.

"Ah! Found it!" He held a small electrical-chip, only around a inch long, it was painted in white, with the center of it being a small blue circle with a special etching on it.

The etching, is every person's unique identity-identifier, created by the Resistance, during the time of Lord First, Alger Edgars.

After a few seconds of silence between the two, with only the winds being heard, a beeping sound came as the man handed over the Unique Identity Identifier, UII, back to Ryo.

With it, the laser-barrier in front turned illusory as Ryo drove past it.

'Sector Six...' A faint spark lit up in Ryo's seemingly-soulless and tired eyes, as he gazed upon the large local buildings, and shops with awe.

He lowered the speed at which he drove and observed his surroundings.

There were kids running at the very edge of the sidewalk, some seemed to be playing along with each other, while the rest were enjoying their life with their parents, all these people had a charming and genuine smile spread on their faces, as their faint, contagious laughs reached Ryo's ears.

He couldn't help but smile too as he continued to drive at a slower pace.

He saw animals roaming around on the streets, some had collars on them and were playing with their owners, while some were strays who were either being barked or hissed at by others or ruffled or ignored.

After some time, a sweet and delicious smell was in the air, it was from the bakery to his left. The store had many cakes, pastries and snacks put on the very frontal display, with more the entire menu being faintly visible inside the store.

And, Ryo who had barely eaten anything for the past ten hours couldn't help but be tempted to stop and have food.

He parked his car at the very edge of the sidewalks and thought deeply for a while, his hand resting on his eyes.

Clack!

He finally gave in to his temptation as he opened the car's door, and put it on stand-by as it stopped hovering.

Walking over to the bakery, he was immediately met by a young gentleman, around 5'5 in height, his black hair was slick-back as he stared at Ryo with his brown eyes with a smile, bowing down at an angle not too higher than 50 degrees, he greeted warmly, "Hello there. Would you like to look at our menu first? He observed Ryo for a moment, before seemingly coming to a conclusion. "Or perhaps you have some questions? Since you do appear to be new!"

Ryo was slightly taken aback by the sharp observations of man. He could help but let out a sound of surprise, before he asked for the menu in a quiet voice. "Uhm, yes. I am new in this sector." He flashed a fake smile, and further clarified his purpose. "I don't have questions, really. May I have your menu?"

"Sure." He said, guiding Ryo towards a seat right behind the front display shelves.
Ryo pulled out the wooden chair and sat down, picking up the menu which laid on top of the metal table, he began going through the items.

'Cakes... Blueberry... Chocolate... Vanilla... I don't really want anything sweet. Maybe I'll... just have something bland, or better fulfilling...' After around three minutes more, Ryo waved at the man who had guided him in and began ordering.

After doing so, he quietly leaned back on his chair and stared at the ceiling with a slightly dreamy look before shutting his eyes.

'Squad Eight...'

---

"Hurry up, Yoru!" Xianye called loudly, waiting downstairs inside Squad 8 Headquarters.

"Yeah! Comin'!" A man around 5'6 in height appeared, running. His pure-white eyes brimmed with life, as his short-black hair which was parted sideways became disheveled.

Letting out a tiredly sigh, Xianye whined, "When will you even be on time..."

"Sorry!" He apologized, despite being unapologetic.

"Well, whatever, Raphael will go greet, and bring in the new person. We'll all just wait inside my office." He said, walking towards the direction of the office.

"Aww, I wanted to greet him." Yoru dejectedly said as he followed Xianye, alongside Haori, another core-member of Squad 8, around 6 feet tall, her silky black hair tied up into a pony swaying as she walked, her emerald-green eyes quietly observing everyone else with an awkward and shy gaze.

---

"Here it is!" The man said, bringing over a tray of food in his hand, and serving it on top of the metallic table.
On top of the tray were two large burgers, alongside a black-colored fizzy drink.

"Thank you." Ryo said, smiling.

After minutes passed, he slowly began chewing down the burger with uneven sized bites. Sometimes a small one, sometimes a large bite.

Burp.

Approximately 10 minutes later, Ryo had finished his food and got up and walking up to the man, he pulled out his phone and asked, "How much is the total?"

"That'll be, forty-two Aled, and 32 Enz's." The man politely answered.

Hearing the price, Ryo quickly tapped on the payment application, followed by a pop-up appearing inside the application.

[Scanning Location...]

[Location Found!]

The application changed, and showed the name of the bakery, along with a box to enter the price.

He put in the value, finishing paying, he quickly walked out and went back into his car.

The moon had already fallen. Its light illuminating the entire streets.

Rubbing his face to stop himself from feeling sleepy, he quickly started the car, after just a nano-second, the car lifted up from the air.

And, Ryo drove towards his destination once more.
