The Heir Of Shadows

The whispers begin: The Thorn Grows

The whispers begin: The Thorn Grows

Jun 02, 2025

It was morning already when Elina woke up. She found her breakfast already waiting for her by her side.
She quickly freshened up and had her breakfast before greeting her siblings.
It was an important day as she had to go to the imperial palace even though she didn't really want to. She needed the books from the imperial library to research what Duke Varen asked her to... and what her father wanted her to.

It was time to disguise again.

Black strands shimmered, a soft glow rippling through them like moonlight on water, before turning into shades of rose and blush. Golden eyes that seemed so angelic turned ocean blue as soon as she pressed her fingertips, radiated glittery silver light with moon magic, over her eyelids.

She walked out of her room and greeted Evelyn and Thalindor who were standing near the kitchen counter.
Both the siblings: Good morning Silverthorn.
Silverthorn: Same.
Evelyn: He's really impatient. He has appointed someone else for the same job as you.
Thalindor: She means the Duke.
Silverthorn: Huh!? And who's that? And who's spying Duke Varen?
Thalindor: Rielle took the job of tailing the Duke. Anyways, it's that Duke Sunfire.
Silverthorn: You mean that Sunfire? The son of Late Duke Nel Sunfire and Duchess Elandria Sunfire? They were executed a few years back for corruption, right? Not that I trust the reasons of executions anymore.
Evelyn: Yes. And by the way, Duke Varen had sent a message that his assistant will be waiting for you at the end the Spicelane market to escort you to the Imperial Palace today.
Silverthorn: Okay. I was going there anyways.
Thalindor: You sure?
Silverthorn: I can't postpone this forever. I'll have to go one day. And I want to know what mom and dad meant as soon as possible.
Evelyn: I understand. I feel that they want us to protect the heir.
Silverthorn: And maybe, make the heir reach the throne too. Anyways, I'll get going now. I bid you farewell.

Silverthorn eased out from the alley’s tight embrace, emerging from the narrow alley like a phantom slipping through the seams of the city.

Silverthorn slipped into the market lane, where stalls pressed shoulder to shoulder and the air was thick with roasted nuts and rumor. Too narrow for a carriage, too wide to be called an alley — it was a street built for footsteps and murmurs.

The sunlight shone on every corner of Virelle except for the alley she resided in.
The Spicelane market was bustling even in the early morning. The crowd was mainly contributed by the mothers who were out in search of recipe essentials... and gossip.
Many stalls were already set and the sellers were preparing the snacks now.
In the outer rings of the capital, spicehands were as common as pickpockets—and far more welcome.

Onions hissing as they hit the pan, the scent of vanilla already thick in the air, roast exhaling a wave of heat and rosemary, fingers dusted with flour moving quickly to shape the dough, firepan merchants shouting over sizzling meat, chowcrier barked out the day’s specials—fried rolls and honeybread twists, people chattering- noisy yet peaceful somehow.

"Hey lovely miss! Please try out our desserts." yelled a sugar hand at Silverthorn.
"No miss! Try our Lavender tea. We have many other teas too." yelled a brewhand at Silverthorn.

Silverthorn, already on her way to the carriage, flashed a beautiful smile—not out of politeness, but because it was the quickest way to exit peacefully. The gesture made them blush, and without missing a step, she continued her jog toward the end of the market.

At the end of the market stood a tall man with green hair. He waved his hands rowards Silverthorn.

The throne stands empty. The court whispers of a forgotten heir.

Assigned to uncover the truth, she steps into a web of lies, hidden power, and the ruins of a dynasty that was never meant to rise again.
