On a hill in a quiet village stood a single, remarkably tall house. Its roof reached so high that on a clear day, it almost touched the clouds. The children in the village called it “The Long House.”
Everything inside was tall and elongated—from the stairs and the dining table to the cupboard for cups and dishes.
In that long house lived a girl. She was tall and lanky, like a tree stretching its tip to touch the sky. Her hair swayed every time she walked down through the wind from the house.
The grown-ups said she was tall because her whole family was tall. But the children didn’t care about such explanations. They called her “Melony the Giant.”
Melony didn’t really have any close friends. She always walked to school with her head down, and rushed home in the evening to hide away alone in the attic.
Every afternoon after school, she would slip past the back lawn, through dense bushes that no other child could easily get through. But Melony could cross them with ease. She would always stop to rest under a particular tree.
It was the tallest tree in the village, with leaves so dense they completely shaded her from view.
She loved being there. No need to shrink herself, no need to apologize, no need to feel out of place. It was quiet—no staring eyes, no laughter, no cutting words. Only the sound of the wind, rustling leaves, and the beat of her own heart.
Until one day...
That day, the rain had just stopped. The leaves were still damp, and the ground was soft. Melony walked beneath the tree as usual—and suddenly froze.
Under a large leaf near the roots, something moved.
“Uut... Uut... Uut...”
A soft, high-pitched noise drifted out. She crouched and peeked under the leaf...
A light brown, round paw, covered with short, glossy fur like velvet, poked out slightly.
What is that? Melony thought as she gently touched the paw with her finger.
“So soft...” she smiled, then carefully lifted the oversized leaf above her head. Its shadow slowly darkened her face... until it was all shade.
But then, twinkling light began to appear, reflecting on the chubby little creature lying on its back, fast asleep. It suckled gently on a root and made little dreamy “uut... uut...” sounds.
“You!... chubby pup... dreaming about drinking warm milk?” she smiled and reached out to rub its soft pinkish belly, lined with fine, fuzzy fur.
Under the once-silent tree, Melony had found a mysterious soft creature... but she had no idea that this big-pawed pup would soon lead her into a world deeper than she had ever dared to enter.
