The chubby-pawed pup startled awake from its sweet dream. It glanced at Melony with its big round eyes in the shadows, then widened them in surprise. Suddenly, it awkwardly flipped over—its plump belly making it almost roll—then scrambled and fled into a burrow beneath the roots, squealing shrilly.
“Wait! Don’t run! I won’t hurt you...” Melony quickly crawled in after it. The squeals gradually faded as the darkness thickened. The air grew damp and cold.
“Little puppy... little puppy...” Her voice echoed through the dark hollow.
She began to feel confused and frightened—tears welled up.
But soon, sparkling lights appeared again. A trail of fireflies lit the way into the deep hollow beneath the great tree's roots.
“So beautiful...” she murmured.
The fireflies, like tiny arrows of light, guided her heart forward. She crawled after them in silence.
In her heart, she whispered, “Big-pawed pup... please don’t misunderstand me. I just want to be your friend.”
“I don’t mean any harm. I just feel so warm inside when I see you.”
The glimmering fireflies reflected in Melony’s eyes. She swallowed quietly and tried to hold back her fear.
“I’ve never had a friend with such a soft, round belly... I hope I get to see you again, big-pawed one.”
In the next moment, the fireflies illuminated the pup again. It had reached the end of the tunnel and scurried under the arm of a mother dog, shivering.
Melony smiled with relief. She hadn’t noticed her surroundings until now—but her smile faded as she looked at the mother dog.
She was thin and frail, her skin wrinkled and dull gray. Three other tiny puppies were nursing from her sagging chest.
Melony froze in place. The fireflies around her slowly faded, leaving only one resting on the gray fur of the mother dog, glowing faintly.
The mother dog looked up at her. Her eyes were tired... but warm.
Melony said nothing. Gently, she reached into her old cloth bag—packed each morning by her mother—tore open a milk carton, and placed it beside the mother dog. Then she slowly backed away as lightly as possible, guided by the last firefly.
“I’ll come back again tomorrow...” she whispered to the glowing light.
Her footsteps were soft as wind. Melony crawled back the way she came, following the firefly that gradually disappeared.
The moon had not yet risen, but her heart felt strangely bright.
When she got home—though a little late—her mother didn’t scold her. She simply handed her a towel and said, “Wash your hands before dinner, dear.”
As she washed her hands, Melony glanced at herself in the mirror and smiled softly.
In her heart, she thought:
“I hope the chubby-pawed one gets to drink warm milk in the morning.”
It was just their first meeting... but little did she know, the pup with the big paws would soon lead her into an adventure that would change her heart forever.
