Chapter 3

I was jolted awake by the buzzing of an alarm clock. I opened my eyes in bleary confusion before I processed what had happened the day before. The cat was still laying next to me, its blue eyes half opened and my arms were wrapped tightly around it.

He needs a name. I thought to myself. Definitely not something involving snow, that's dumb. Maybe…Ooh, I Salt. I’m naming him Salt.

“Good morning, Salt. You like the warmth from the blankets, huh? That's why you’re still lying with me, isn't it?” I talked to the cat, my voice soft so Zayne, who was in the room next to me, wouldn’t hear.

I don’t want him to think I’m growing soft over a cat. I thought as I ran my hand over Salt’s head.

I let out a breath and pulled the cat closer to my body, seeking the warmth that was radiating off of his fur. I sat up, yawning and stretching my arms out. Salt stood up and jumped off the bed stretching out, and letting out a soft purr.

“Don't make me feel bad about going to make food, little dude,” I smiled down at the cat as I opened the door and walked out, keeping quiet to not disturb Zayne, who was asleep in the bedroom next to mine.

The soft pitter pattering of Salts steps filled the room as he trotted next to me. As I headed down the staircase he jumped in front of me, making my foot almost land on top of him. I stopped right before, my foot hung in mid air as he gracefully hopped down the staircase with ease. After he made it to the last step he stopped and waited for me to follow. I made sure to walk toe to heal, toe to heal, to not make a sound.

I reached the end of the staircase, meeting the cat who’s blue eyes were watching my every move.

He must be hungry. What do I have that he could eat here? It’s not my house and they most likely don't have supplies for a cat of all things. That kind of thing is pretty much against the law in the company. Well maybe they just won't find out.

As I entered the kitchen my hand went immediately to the fridge, looking for anything that I could possibly give to Salt, and, well, for me to have for breakfast as well. I found a plate of raw sausage, I guess that will work. As my hands started to dig through the pantry I found a pan and a few bowls so I took them out and set them onto the countertop. I flipped the plate over and cranked the oven, turning a burner on. At the same time I put the sausages into the pan and continued on my search to try to find something suitable for breakfast. As I was pawing through the cabinets, I found a waffle maker.

Ooh. Perfect. I slid it out and plugged it in as I searched for some pancake mix. They most likely would have it, it would be pretty odd if they didn't, but considering the fact that it was already a secret organization that trained children to kill people for money, they aren’t the most normal.

As I was looking through the last cabinet I found what I was looking for, a bag of pancake mix. It had been sitting there for who knows how long but you know, what’s the harm? Some food poisoning and mold never hurt anyone. Well. Other than 190. We don’t talk about her.

I pulled the bag out and gave it the good old sniff test. As I did so I inhaled some of it and had to put the bag down as I started to cough and sneeze uncontrollably. My eyes started watering, but eventually I got the dust out and the tears from my face. I picked the bag up and examined it, looking for any holes, any sign the food had been tampered with. Also an expiration date. An expiration date would be nice.

I found none, which was good and bad, good on the side that it most likely hadn’t been poisoned, bad as in it might be years expired.I then heard sizzling and popping and got an intense whiff of cooking meat. I had the sausage on the stove for at least five minutes. I jumped back over to the stovetop and grabbed a metal fork from the silverware and a plate from the cabinet. I used the fork to roll the sausages over and then set it back down onto the plate.

I have to let them cool a bit and I should also probably cut it up for Salt. I don’t want it to burn his little tongue.

I headed back over to the mix just as I heard the waffle machine beep, signaling that it was hot. I started on making the batter, quickly because it was a mix. Once I had combined all the ingredients I poured them into the waffle maker. After a few minutes they were ready. There was no butter or anything so I had to leave them plain. At that moment I heard the soft pitter pattering of Zayne's footsteps on the floor and pretended to not notice.

“Ooh! Waffles,” he said, his eyes sparkling. He walked forwards and tried to grab a waffle but I hit his hand out of the way and gave him a sharp glare.

“No. There's enough batter, make your own,” I snapped as I took the plate of sausages.

He looked at me with a look of mock hurt, “But you won’t eat all that…,” his eyes were begging. I couldn’t care less.
