So, quick recap:
I fell into a void.
Met my mysterious, probably-superpowered father.
Found out my mom kept a bunch of secrets from me.
And now, some unknown, whispering nightmare creatures are closing in on us.
Yep. This day was going great.
The shadows around us thickened, twisting like they were alive. The whispering wasn’t just getting louder—it was turning into words. Garbled, broken words in a language I didn’t recognize, but somehow understood.
"Give... him... to us..."
Yeah, that’s gonna be a nope from me.
“Okay,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “What exactly is ‘they found us’ supposed to mean? Who are they?”
My dad grabbed my arm. “No time. Move.”
I barely had a second to protest before the ground lurched beneath us. The void itself shifted, like something huge was stirring beneath the surface.
Then, the shadows attacked.
A tendril of pure darkness lashed out at me. I jumped back just in time to avoid getting snatched, but it moved fast—way faster than I was ready for.
“Not a fan of this!” I yelped.
Dad raised his hand, and the shadows stopped. Just—froze mid-air, like someone had hit pause on reality.
His eyes glowed. Like, actually glowed, burning silver against the darkness. He muttered something under his breath, and the air around us rippled.
The shadows screamed.
Like, actually screamed. Not a creepy whisper, not a distant echo—an ear-piercing, full-volume shriek that rattled my bones.
Then they vanished.
Just like that, the whispering stopped. The air cleared. The void around us settled, like nothing had happened.
I stared at my dad. “Okay. What was that? And how did you do that?”
He exhaled, his eyes fading back to normal. “They are the ones who took your mother.”
My stomach dropped. “Wait—what? You mean those things—”
“Yes.” His expression was unreadable. “And they will come for you, too.”
Okay. Deep breaths. Don’t panic.
Too late—I was absolutely panicking.
“So let me get this straight,” I said, pointing wildly at the spot where the shadows had been. “You show up out of nowhere, tell me I’m ‘more than I understand,’ and now shadow monsters want me dead?”
My dad didn’t blink. “Not dead.”
I swallowed. “Oh. Well, that’s… better?”
“They want you taken.”
I stared at him. “Yeah, see, that actually sounds worse.”
He stepped closer, gripping my shoulder. “Listen to me. If they took your mother, that means they’re after something she was protecting. Something you have to find before they do.”
I didn’t like where this was going. “Find what?”
His expression darkened. “Your pendant.”
Oh, great. The one thing I had already lost.
“No pressure, huh?” I muttered.
Dad looked at me seriously. “We don’t have much time.”
Before I could ask what that meant, the void shook again—and this time, something huge started rising from the darkness.
And let me tell you—whatever it was? It was not friendly.
