Background Girl

chapter eight

chapter eight

Jun 30, 2025

Amy and I planned another hangout after church that same week. I can’t help but remember our last hangout, when she hugged me. I don’t recall her scent; it escapes me now, but I could probably recognize it if I got a faint whiff of it from somewhere else. It felt so intimate, almost like she didn’t want to pull away, or did I just imagine it? I’m not saying I’ve never received a hug before. I get hugs from my friends and my family, but Amy’s was different.

Summer break is rolling around soon, and so are finals. I am dreading finals. I’m only in my second year of high school, so I should have two more years to make up for it if I fail… Right? I was relieved when Amy mentioned that we should help each other with finals during our hangout. Then after, we can reward ourselves.

I had walked into Amy’s room for the second time. It still felt weird to set foot in her room, but a little bit more familiar now. Amy grabbed my wrist to coax me to sit on her bed with her.

“I have something for you!” Amy beamed at me.

“What is it?” I asked curiously.

She reached over to her nightstand and opened a drawer, pulling out a small, black cardboard box with a red ribbon tied around it. Amy unties the ribbon, matching the color of the half-chipped nail polish on her fingernails. She opened the box, slowly revealing a bracelet with a sun charm. I realized now that she was wearing one with a moon charm. She excitedly pulled the bracelet out of the box and took her time tying it around my wrist.

“Now we’re matching,” she smirked at me playfully, waving her wrist around.

“Th-thank you.” I stammered

“Oh my goodness, look at you, you’re beet red,” she giggled

I quickly turned my head to the side as an attempt to hide my face, before fully covering it with both of my hands. Amy then grabs both of my wrists to pry my hands away from my face, and I’m met with her hazel-eyed gaze, and her freckles scattered throughout her face like stars in the night sky. I don’t think we were gonna study tonight.

I don’t think we were gonna study tonight.

I wasn’t thinking when I did it, but at the same time, I thought about the thrill. I imagined the look on his face after. I forgot all about our study plans for the finals, and I inched my face even closer to his, staring at his lips. For a moment, I noticed a scar next to his right eye. Probably from skating, I thought to myself, not realizing I was slightly smiling. The room was so quiet, only the faint sound of cicadas could be heard outside my window. I couldn’t wait any longer. My lips crashed into Moir’s. I wasn’t expecting it to be perfect; his breath smelled of beef and gravy, but it was Moir. I pulled away for a second to get a good look at his pretty face, before wrapping my arms around his neck for a second kiss. His lips were quivering this time, as if it was overwhelming for him. He wrapped his arms around my waist, and he kissed me like he owned my lips. I could almost hear his heartbeat sync with mine, and I didn’t want it to end. How did we go from practically avoiding each other to this? I thought. Moir finally pulled away, and as if he just realized what we just did, his face went beet red again. Cutie.

I didn’t plan on kissing Amy today, I don’t think it was supposed to happen, but it did. What does this make us now? My heart is racing. I couldn’t wait to call Vicks and tell him everything when I got home, but right now I was still sitting down on Amy’s bed. My face resembled a tomato while Amy looked at me thoughtfully.

“What’s next? Are we gonna study for finals?” Amy finally asked, with a hint of playfulness in her voice.

“I-I don’t think I’ll be able to focus after what we just did,” I admitted.

“Yeah, you’re right,” she chuckled.

Amy finally stands up, walks towards me, and gives me a peck on the cheek.

We talked and talked, we laughed, we lay in bed together. I didn’t want to leave, but I had to get home by dinner time like usual. I hugged Amy this time when we were at the doorway, and I left Amy’s house that day looking forward to the next time I get to see her.
