The love I lamented

Sunday (2/2)

Sunday (2/2)

Jun 29, 2025

Thank goodness the restaurant wasn't too far from the church, and we always went walking, sometimes when we walked, it was to show off something. New shoes, a new dress, or something of the sort. This time, Daniella showed off an engagement present, which was a silver necklace with diamonds that looked as if two swans were kissing with a pearl dangling in the middle of it. It was a gift from her future mother-in-law that she had made from a jeweler that she knew in the capital.

Daniela always donated her free time to charity; she went from lunch to lunch, dinner to dinner, and house to house asking for money from the best families in Guadalajara for the thousands of charities that she participated in. I always thought she was overly good. I never understood why she did it, but I never judged. I think I began to understand her when I noticed that almost all of the rich woman don't have anything to fill their time with, that way they killed two birds with one stone. Always gossiping with each other while pretending to be good, very few times were they genuinely good.

When we arrived at the restaurant, the waitress sat us down at our usual table, which was a table for four besides a window and at the far end of the restaurant, where we could see who entered and the cars that drove past.

“Can you bring me some chilaquiles with eggs, cream, and avocado, please?” I asked the waitress, and Daniella asked for the same.

“Mari, why don't you come to Guadalajara with me?”

“Why would I go? There's nothing to do over there,”

“There's never anything anywhere for you, come on, let's go.”

“Okay, but I’ll have to ask my mom,” I answered.

My mom was the one who decided everything at home, literally everything, from what we ate to how we dressed. We finished everything and we went back home after our driver went to pick us up, on Sundays, barely anyone did anything since even god rested on the seventh day. So Daniella and I went to my living room.

We laid down on the living room sofa while we listened to the television and she read the newspaper. “When do you come back?” I asked her as I watched TV. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of going away. I was contemplating the thought of leaving when Daniella heard the engine of a car not so far away. “Mari! My aunt and uncle are here,” She yelled excitedly as she looked out the window. I ran outside and waved at them with a bright smile on my face, “Hello!”. It was just a week, but I was not used to being without them for more than three days.

My mom got out of the car and hugged me, along with my dad, and then they hugged my cousin. My parents were asking her questions about her house, my mom's brother, and my aunt. We entered the house, and I served them fruit with lime and powder made up of sweet crushed chili peppers so my parents could refresh themselves, and they gave us some boxes decorated with ribbons in the shape of a bow and showed us all of the things they bought. While they showed us their purchases and our gifts, I lost myself in the moment and forgot the trip I was planning.
