The light at the end of the tunnel

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Jun 24, 2025

I wake up with a void filling my body hoping it will just shut off so I can enter the dream land again. I always feel this way when I wake up, because this world hasn't punished me enough already right? with heavy eyes, I push open into the corridor doors leading into the prison in which Our government calls school.

Ugh I hate school.

As I scatter through my locker to find a textbook on "living or nonliving organisms." For my next biology class I can feel eyes burn the back of my head as I turn around I see none other than,

"Carter?"

I say in shock as I turn around to see the set of eyes that were staring down my back. A few seconds go by before he says a word, just like last night when I bumped into him, he doesn't talk much does he? Is this about last night? Does he want something from me? I didn't even mean to bump into him, I mean it was obviously an accident! There's no need fo-

before I could finish my thought,

"You have biology with Mr Kent too next right?"

 I stutter,

 "Oh well, I-"

I pause to take a look at his expression so I can possibly get a glimpse of what was going through his head. He just had a stern expression waiting for me to answer a simple question.

"Yes, why do you ask?"

I finally manage to say.

"Well it's just that you are in front of my locker and I'm just trying to get my biology textbook out of it."

He says slightly annoyed but nowhere on his face shows it.

"Oh, I'm sorry."

I say as I begin to walk away out of embarrassment. Of course he is in my next class, I completely forgot. Which is weird because we are already halfway through senior year and I've never seen him open the locker next to mine or even walk near it.

How could I go through half the year having not realized that the locker next to mine is his?

I walk into Mr Kent's class, turning my head side to side trying to set my eyes on Carter after our awkward interaction. As I jerk my head side to side walking to my desk located at the front of the classroom, I feel myself bump into something. Immediately I look forward and to no surprise I'm met with a familiar set of eyes.

"OH-M-GEE. HEY GIRL!"

Now this, this is what I would usually call a fake blonde bitch but unfortunately she has a name.

"Oh heyy nessa.."

I say trying to sound enthusiastic but come out sounding sarcastic. Nessa is my neighbor slash the schools supposed; "queen bee" she's your average blonde, ditzy cheerleader. She is also dating Carter, they both got nominated the "most attractive couple."

I roll my eyes thinking about it.

Why might she be talking to me as if I'm her friend you may be wondering, which is why I'm here to tell you this here is why, A girls got to make money.

"Do you have my essay girl? You know I've been counting on you for this!"

She says in a sweet like honey tone.

"So you better have not fucked this up for me"

she leans in and whispers aggressively.

"That A better be guaranteed or you know what happens!"

She says reverting back to her honey like tone.

"Don't worry nessa I got everything just as planned."

As I reach for the inside of my bag I mutter under my breath "don't throw a fit just yet."

"What is that?"

She asks in an offended tone almost as if she actually heard what I said.

"Oh nothing."

I say as I grin sarcastically handing her the glorious stapled sheets she made such a big deal about.

She snatches the paper from my hands as she rolls her eyes, she then hands me a rolled up 10 she begins to stomp off. Still having a grin on my face, it quickly drops as I look to the direction she's walking. There he is. Staring right at me. Carter. What does he want?

As our eyes meet I quickly look away in shock, instead I look down at my notebook I scribbled in far after I sat down. I then look back up to see if he's still looking my way, but by the time I look up nessa is all over him. Ew, gross in public, In school? I scowl.

"Attention class! Attention! I need all of y'all's ATTENTION please!!"

Mr Kent yells out to the class. My attention quickly goes to him.

"Hello class! Glad EVERYONE is here and could MAKE IT."

he emphasizes as he glares down carter. Carter is not an attendant worthy student, he's either always late or never shows up. Makes sense that I forgot we have the same class together, l never even see him. Me on the other hand I have an okay attendance but the straight A's, they make up for it. well, it just comes with a price!

Mr Kent makes us do a surprise pop quiz, of course the students begged to differ and wanted otherwise but like he says and I quote,

"it wouldn't be a surprise pop quiz if it weren't a surprise."

As the class goes silent the tik of the clock gets louder. Time slows down and all of a sudden I'm the first one to be done.

"Great job Amelia! First to finish first to score 100 I'm impressed."

Mr Kent laughs heartily.

"Good to see I'm teaching someone right"

he says just loud enough for the class to hear.

"Haha I try."

I reply laughing nervously back in response trying to avoid any unwanted attention or conversation. I then start heading back to my original seat.

When the bell finally rings saving me from the first jail cell just to enter into another, I hurriedly head to my locker hoping to be there before Carter does so I don't have to run into him and end up embarrassing myself again.

As I'm hurriedly putting away my textbook, I exchange it for something equally as boring, but just before I can close my locker and lock it up I hear my name being spoken from behind my back in a mans voice.

It can't be. After trying to avoid all this trouble I walked right into it, AGAIN. I then pause, close my eyes, take a deep breath slowly turn around and finally take a deep sigh before I start to say,

"Sorry am I in the way of your locker again? I was just about to finish up anyway go ahead."

As I start walking away Carter then speaks,

"wait."

"Hm?"

I question as I turn around confused as to what it could be this time.

"Do you need something Carter?"

I ask in confusion.

His face then suddenly changed to a face I've never seen him make almost like a face reluctantly begging for help. What is this? His eyes were lit at the same time, he's so dangerously beautiful.

"Um- Actually I do,"

he says after a long pause.

"I heard you get paid to do people's homework and I-"

"Don't tell me, you want me to do your homework for you, is that it?"

I say slightly annoyed after our last few interactions.

"No, that's not it."

he responds defensively.

he no longer held the look that was begging for help instead he has a serious expression. What could he possibly want then if he doesn't want me to do his school work for him?

"I need a tutor. You're the only one in this school with all straight A's, please."

Please? My eyes grew wide in shock. Did Carter Richard's really just ask for my help, say please and of all things he asked me to TUTOR him?

"Please."

He pleads again.

I'm reluctant but his facial expression is somehow genuine and I kind of pity him so I guess it wouldn't hurt to try? No, what am I saying? Am I crazy?

"Why does someone like you need tutoring anyway? Why should I help you? Can't your daddy pay the school off?"

I scoff as I ask smugly.

"I'll pay you twenty an hour. I'll also pay you a hundred every A you get me."

He responds immediately without hesitation.

"Deal."
